That made a ray-tracing-style lighting effect available to try in many Freestyle-supported games; it did not add developer-integrated ray tracing to hundreds of titles. Driver 511.23 is now an obsolete release, so most players should use current NVIDIA software rather than install it just for this filter.
What NVIDIA driver 511.23 actually added
NVIDIA’s January 2022 Game Ready announcement introduced three depth-based Freestyle filters: Screen Space Ray Traced Global Illumination (SSRTGI), Screen Space Ambient Occlusion (SSAO), and Dynamic Depth of Field (Dynamic DOF). It also covered DLDSR, game support for titles including God of War, eight newly validated G-SYNC Compatible displays, and the 12GB GeForce RTX 3080. The driver release page identifies 511.23 as a WHQL release from January 14, 2022, for Windows 10 64-bit and Windows 11; the Game Ready announcement explains the Freestyle filters.
The phrase “ray tracing to hundreds of games” compresses two different facts. Driver 511.23 added SSRTGI to Freestyle, NVIDIA’s overlay-based post-processing feature. Freestyle’s broad game support is what gives a filter potential reach; the driver did not retrofit native ray-tracing support into those games.
What SSRTGI means—and what it does not
SSRTGI stands for Screen Space Ray Traced Global Illumination. “Screen space” means the effect estimates lighting using information available in the rendered frame, including pixels and depth data. As a post-processing filter, it can emphasize contact shadows, creases, corners, and indirect-light coloration, making some scenes appear to have more depth. NVIDIA described the filter as enhancing lighting and shadows.

It is an approximation, not a full simulation of light bouncing through a scene. Objects and light sources outside the current view are not reliably represented in screen-space data, and results can vary with the game’s rendering and depth information. NVIDIA described its Freestyle filter as a modified version of Pascal Gilcher’s “Ray Tracing ReShade Filter”; that does not establish that SSRTGI and Gilcher’s ReShade RTGI are identical implementations.
SSRTGI versus native game ray tracing
| Aspect | SSRTGI through Freestyle | Native DXR ray tracing |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is implemented | An overlay/post-processing filter | In the game’s engine, implemented by its developers |
| Information used | Screen-space and depth information from the rendered frame | Scene geometry, materials, and ray queries, depending on the game’s implementation |
| Availability | Potentially usable in Freestyle-supported games when the overlay and filter work with the title | Only in games that include the feature |
| Off-screen lighting | Limited by what is represented in the current frame | Can account for off-screen scene data, depending on implementation |
| Visual integration | Can vary by scene and may produce screen-space artifacts | Usually integrated with the game’s rendering, though quality and scope vary by game |
| How it is enabled | Through the NVIDIA overlay in a supported game | Usually through an in-game graphics setting |
| What it proves about the GPU | It is not proof that a game is using native RTX/DXR effects | Uses the game’s ray-tracing implementation and compatible hardware/software |
In other words, SSRTGI is a screen-space ray-tracing-style lighting filter, not a new DXR renderer for old games. NVIDIA’s launch announcement characterizes it as a modified ReShade filter, while its ray-tracing platform backgrounder describes the separate hardware ray-tracing platform.

How to try the filter
The 2022 GeForce Experience route
- Install GeForce Game Ready Driver 511.23 if you are reproducing the historical setup, and have GeForce Experience installed.
- In GeForce Experience, enable the in-game overlay. NVIDIA documented this as a prerequisite for Freestyle.
- Launch a game that is supported by Freestyle, then press
Alt+F3to open the Freestyle filters. - Choose SSRTGI if it appears in the filter list, then adjust its settings and compare the image with the filter disabled.
NVIDIA’s launch instructions specify the overlay and Alt+F3 shortcut. The filter list can depend on the game and setup; do not assume every Freestyle title exposes every filter.
Using NVIDIA software today
GeForce Experience has been superseded by the NVIDIA App. NVIDIA currently advertises Freestyle and game-appearance filters in the NVIDIA App, but its modern interface and filter availability should not be assumed to match the 2022 GeForce Experience steps exactly. For ordinary current use, install the current app and driver from NVIDIA’s driver-download page, then check the overlay’s available filters for the game you are playing.

Which games and GPUs can use it?
Freestyle support is broad, but a Freestyle game count is not an SSRTGI compatibility guarantee. NVIDIA cited more than 650 Freestyle-supported games in one announcement and later added 350 games in a GeForce Experience update. Those figures describe Freestyle support generally, not independently confirmed SSRTGI operation in every listed game. NVIDIA’s current NVIDIA App page advertises Freestyle support in more than 1,200 games; that current product claim should not be applied retroactively to driver 511.23 or to SSRTGI specifically. Check NVIDIA’s supported games and apps list for current software compatibility.
Practical operation can depend on whether the overlay recognizes the game, whether it can hook into the title’s rendering API, whether useful depth data is available, and whether anti-cheat or other software blocks the overlay. A filter can also be technically available but look poor in a particular game because of its art style or rendering pipeline.

Driver 511.23 listed a broad range of GeForce products, including GTX 10-series, GTX 16-series, RTX 20-series, and RTX 30-series cards, with separate notebook and OEM considerations. NVIDIA’s launch material did not establish a simple rule that SSRTGI required an RTX GPU or was guaranteed on every GTX card. Availability depended on the game, overlay, depth information, and filter requirements; the post-processing nature of SSRTGI alone does not settle compatibility.
Visual trade-offs and performance
In suitable scenes, SSRTGI may make contact shadows and corners more pronounced, add perceived depth, or introduce subtle indirect-light coloration. NVIDIA presented Prey as an example of combining SSRTGI with DLDSR for a more remastered-looking result. That is an illustrative use, not a promise that every game will benefit.

Screen-space effects have characteristic failure modes. Depending on the title and scene, a player may see halos around objects, light leaking or incorrect occlusion, shimmer or instability during motion, overly dark interiors, or weaknesses near screen edges. UI elements, transparency, and cutscenes may also interact poorly with post-processing. These are reasons to compare the filter on and off rather than treat it as a universal visual upgrade.
There is no single reliable FPS penalty for all systems and games. The cost varies with GPU, resolution, game engine, filter settings, resolution scaling, other active filters, and whether the system is CPU- or GPU-limited. Compare performance in the same scene at the same resolution and settings before and after enabling SSRTGI. Using DLDSR at the same time can raise the total rendering workload, even if the combined image is preferable.

- Check NVIDIA’s supported-games list to see whether the title is supported by the current app.
- Confirm that the NVIDIA overlay is enabled, then restart the game after changing overlay settings.
- Update the NVIDIA App and driver for current use. If reproducing the original release, use the matching historical GeForce Experience environment instead.
- If the overlay does not appear, try borderless or windowed display mode rather than exclusive fullscreen.
- Temporarily disable other overlays or injectors, such as Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, or third-party tools, to check for conflicts.
- Avoid testing injected visual filters in anti-cheat-protected multiplayer. Check the game’s rules and anti-cheat policy first; do not assume an overlay is permitted.
- If SSRTGI causes artifacts or instability, remove it from the active filter stack and return to the default profile.
Alternatives for improving older games
- Native in-game ray tracing: The most integrated option when a game offers it, but it is limited to titles with developer support and can be demanding.
- ReShade: Offers broader manual customization and community shaders, but requires shader and compatibility troubleshooting. Its official site is reshade.me; do not use injectors in multiplayer without checking the game’s policy.
- DLDSR: Supersamples and downsamples to improve image quality; it does not add indirect lighting. NVIDIA says 2.25X DLDSR can approximate the image quality of 4X DSR at a lower performance cost on supported RTX hardware, but that is NVIDIA’s stated comparison, not a guarantee for every system. Details appear in the 511.23 announcement.
- Freestyle SSAO: A less ambitious depth-based effect to consider when SSRTGI is too costly or creates distracting artifacts.
- RTX Remix: A deeper modding route for supported classic games that can involve changes to assets and lighting, rather than a universal overlay. NVIDIA describes the project at RTX Remix.
Should you install driver 511.23 now?
No, not for ordinary modern gaming. Version 511.23 dates to January 2022 and is obsolete. Use the current NVIDIA App and current driver unless you have a specific archival, testing, or compatibility reason to reproduce that release. SSRTGI can be worth experimenting with in a supported single-player game, but it is a reversible visual filter—not a substitute for native ray tracing or a reason by itself to buy a new GPU. NVIDIA’s current app and driver links are here and here.
