For a quick private CS2 duel, load a suitable map, remove bots, end warmup, set the freeze time, round timing and round limit, then restart the match. A practical starting point is bot_kick; mp_freezetime 2; mp_round_restart_delay 3; mp_roundtime 60; mp_maxrounds 30; mp_warmup_end 1; mp_overtime_enable 1; mp_restartgame 1;. These are adjustable community-guide values, not an official Valve preset, so confirm that they behave as expected in your current CS2 build.
The short setup
Use a private lobby or private server with the map you want, open the developer console, and enter the following commands:

bot_kick;
mp_freezetime 2;
mp_round_restart_delay 3;
mp_roundtime 60;
mp_maxrounds 30;
mp_warmup_end 1;
mp_overtime_enable 1;
mp_restartgame 1;
This sequence is adapted from a Steam Community guide last updated October 4, 2023. It removes bots, ends the warmup, gives each round a short preparation period, adds a brief pause between rounds, sets a finite round count, permits overtime and restarts the match so the rules are reloaded. Treat every number as a starting point rather than a universally best setting. CS2 updates, map logic and the selected game mode can affect how a command behaves.
Do not enable sv_cheats for an ordinary private duel. A normal 1v1 uses server settings that are available without cheats; practice-only commands are a separate use case.

Does CS2 have a dedicated 1v1 game mode?
No. Valve’s game-mode reference treats 1v1 arenas on some official Competitive and Wingman maps as map features, not as a separate game mode. You create the duel by choosing a map, limiting the players in the private session and configuring the match rules.
The underlying modes are identified by these settings:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Mode | game_type |
game_mode |
Default maximum players |
|---|---|---|---|
| Competitive | 0 | 1 | 10 |
| Wingman | 0 | 2 | 4 |
Those defaults describe the normal modes, not a guaranteed two-player ruleset. A private lobby, a suitable map and the round commands are what turn the session into a practical duel.
What the mode identifiers actually do
game_type and game_mode are not simple player-count switches. Valve’s documentation explains that they affect how the next map is initialized and which mode configuration files execute. In other words, changing the mode can change the rules loaded for the next map, while the commands in the opening block adjust the live round flow after the map is available.
Competitive is identified as game_type 0 and game_mode 1, with a normal maximum of 10 players. Wingman uses game_type 0 and game_mode 2, with a normal maximum of four. Neither entry means “automatically make this a 1v1.” Select the mode that best matches the map and rules you want, then verify the actual two-player result in the private session.
Choose the right map and session type
Use a private lobby for a one-off duel
A private lobby is the simplest route when two friends want to play immediately. Create the lobby, invite the other player, select the intended map and launch. If the map includes a dedicated duel or arena section, use that section; otherwise choose a map with fair spawns, manageable sightlines and enough space for the agreed rules.

A community guide describes selecting a workshop map and then applying the console commands, but you should confirm that the map is currently available and compatible with your CS2 build before planning an event around it. Have a second map ready if the workshop item has been removed, renamed or updated.
Do not assume an arena is a separate ruleset
Some official Competitive and Wingman maps contain 1v1 warmup arenas. Valve documents these as map content. Loading such an arena does not automatically switch the server to a hidden “1v1 mode”; the selected map and your match configuration still control the session. A map can provide the space and spawns while the server still follows the selected mode’s configuration.
Use a dedicated server only when persistence matters
You do not need a dedicated server for a single private match. A dedicated host becomes useful when the server should stay available independently of either player’s local game session, or when you want a repeatable environment for a group. Valve’s networking documentation describes a dedicated server as authoritative for simulation, rules and player input. It does not establish a special CS2 hardware requirement for a 1v1, so do not infer one from the fact that a dedicated server is an option.

For two people playing one short session, a private lobby reduces setup and avoids maintaining a separate server process. For a league, rotating queue or regular practice room, persistent hosting can make the map and configuration available to everyone at the agreed time. That is a convenience choice, not a requirement imposed by the 1v1 format.

What each 1v1 command changes
| Command | Value in the example | Purpose and qualification |
|---|---|---|
bot_kick |
none | Removes bots from the current session so only the two human players remain. |
mp_freezetime |
2 seconds | Sets the freeze period at the start of a round. Two seconds is the community example; use a longer period if players need time to choose sides or prepare. |
mp_round_restart_delay |
3 seconds | Sets the pause before the next round begins. Three seconds is a short transition rather than a mandatory competitive standard. |
mp_roundtime |
60 | Sets the round-time value used by the selected setup. The cited guide uses 60; timing interpretation can vary with map and mode, so verify the result in your map. |
mp_maxrounds |
30 | Limits the match to a finite number of rounds. Thirty is the guide’s example, not a source-backed optimum. |
mp_warmup_end |
1 | Ends the warmup immediately when the command is accepted. |
mp_overtime_enable |
1 | Enables overtime behavior where the selected mode supports it. The exact overtime rules depend on the mode configuration. |
mp_restartgame |
1 | Restarts the match after the other variables are entered, giving the new round rules a clean start. |
Enter the commands after the map has loaded. Keeping them in one semicolon-separated line is convenient, but entering them one at a time produces the same settings. If a command is rejected or has no visible effect, check the current build’s console output and the map’s mode before changing other variables.
The order is practical: remove unwanted players, change the round variables, end warmup and then restart. The restart is last so the match begins with the full set of values rather than a mixture of old and new rules. If you paste the block during a live round, expect the visible change to be clearer after the restart.
Choose settings for the kind of duel you want
There is no source-backed universal “best” preset. Pick the timing and length that match the session rather than copying numbers without considering how long the duel should last.
| Setting | Fast casual duel | More deliberate match | How to decide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze time | 0–2 seconds | A few seconds | Use the shorter range when both players are ready to fight immediately; allow more time when choosing sides or preparing equipment. |
| Round restart delay | Short, such as 3 seconds | A little longer | A short delay keeps momentum; a longer one gives players a clear pause between rounds. |
| Round time | Long enough to avoid an arbitrary timeout | A limit agreed for the map and rules | The community example uses mp_roundtime 60. Confirm how the selected map and mode interpret the value. |
| Maximum rounds | A finite set for a short session | More rounds for a longer match | The example uses 30. Reduce or increase it according to the time available and whether you want a best-of-style finish. |
| Economy and weapons | Default starts for a familiar competitive feel | Agreed starting weapons or money | Decide this before launching. The supplied settings do not establish authoritative values for custom money or loadouts. |
| Map | A duel or arena map | A familiar map with fair spawns and sightlines | Map geometry often affects fairness more than a small timing change. |
For a first attempt, keep the economy and weapons at their normal defaults and change only the round flow. That isolates map or timing problems from custom loadout problems. Once both players agree on the format, save that command set for future sessions.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A short casual duel benefits from removing dead time: use little or no freeze time, a brief restart delay and a finite round count. A deliberate match can use a few seconds to prepare and a longer pause between rounds. Neither style is intrinsically more correct. The important point is that both players know the values before the first scored round and that the same values are used for a rematch.
How to apply the settings in CS2
1. Enable and open the developer console
If the console is unavailable, enable the developer console in CS2’s game settings. The exact menu wording can change between updates. After enabling it, use the assigned console key while you are in the private match or server.
2. Start a private match on the intended map
Create the private lobby, invite the second player and select the map. If you are using a workshop map, verify that both players can access the same map version. Wait until the map has loaded before applying round commands.
3. Apply the command set
Paste the example block into the server console, or enter each line separately:

mp_maxrounds 30

The final restart is intentional. It starts the configured match rather than leaving you in a warmup or a round created under the previous rules.
4. Confirm the result before playing for a score
- Both humans spawn on opposing sides.
- No bot occupies a player slot.
- The warmup has ended.
- The opening freeze period is close to the value you selected.
- The round transition pause is visible after a round ends.
- The match stops at the agreed round limit or follows the mode’s overtime behavior.
This is a verification checklist for your own session, not a claim of independent testing. Command behavior can change with a CS2 update, and a map can impose its own constraints.
Do this check before recording a result or starting a tournament bracket. A command can be accepted by the console without producing the exact timing you expected on a particular map. Watching one complete round and one round transition is usually enough to catch a warmup, map or restart mistake before the score matters.
Saving a repeatable setup
Valve’s game-mode documentation explains that game_type and game_mode affect how the next map is initialized and which mode configuration files run. It describes corresponding _server.cfg files for local map launches. This gives you a way to make a recurring setup load with a map instead of pasting every command manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe exact file location and launch details depend on whether you are running a local game or a dedicated server. Keep the configuration limited to commands you actually want, and retest it after game updates. A file that loaded correctly in one build may need adjustment if Valve changes a command or mode configuration.
For a simple occasional duel, a saved text snippet is often safer than changing a global configuration file. Paste the snippet after the map loads, verify the result, and avoid carrying practice-only commands into ordinary matches.
If you maintain separate formats, keep separate snippets—for example, one for a rapid casual duel and another for a longer match. Label each with its map, intended mode and round limit. This prevents accidentally using a 30-round configuration when both players agreed to a shorter session, while still keeping the setup easy to reproduce.
Dedicated-server option for persistent duels
The general Source Dedicated Server reference documents command-line options in the form +<console variable> <arg>, including +map to select the starting map and +sv_lan 1 to restrict availability to a LAN. This is general Source documentation rather than a complete, current CS2 deployment guide. Treat it as background syntax and verify the launch procedure against the CS2 server build you are using.

A persistent server still needs the same practical decisions: map, player access, bot removal, round timing, maximum rounds and overtime behavior. Hosting does not automatically create a 1v1 mode. Configure the server, connect both players, run the settings and check the resulting match in-game.

Use a dedicated route when the server must remain online, when several people take turns, or when the host’s local session should not determine availability. For two friends playing one short match, the private-lobby method is less work.
Because the dedicated server is authoritative for simulation, rules and player input, apply server-side settings where the server can read them. A client-side paste cannot guarantee that a remote server will accept every rule. If a remote setup behaves differently, inspect the loaded server configuration and restart the map after correcting it.

Common problems and fixes
A bot remains after launch
Run bot_kick after the map has loaded, then restart the match. If a bot returns, check whether the lobby or map is repopulating unused slots and confirm that the command was entered on the server console rather than a client-only console.
The match is still in warmup
Run mp_warmup_end 1 and then mp_restartgame 1. If warmup returns on the next map, the map or mode configuration may be loading its own settings; review the relevant mode-specific configuration.
The timing feels wrong
Check one variable at a time. Freeze time is controlled by mp_freezetime, the pause between rounds by mp_round_restart_delay, and the round-time value by mp_roundtime. The cited guide’s value of 60 is not guaranteed to produce identical real-world timing on every map or mode, so observe a complete round before changing it.
The match does not end when expected
Confirm mp_maxrounds 30 or your chosen limit was accepted before the restart. If overtime is enabled, the match may continue according to the selected mode’s overtime rules rather than ending at the first apparent limit.
A workshop map will not load
Check that the map is still available, that both players have the same current version and that it supports the mode you selected. Workshop availability can change, so keep a compatible fallback map rather than relying on one community arena.
A command is rejected after an update
Read the console response, remove the failing command and test the remaining settings. Do not assume that a command documented for an older community guide is an official guarantee for every current build. Recheck the map, game mode and current Valve documentation before adding replacement variables.
The settings work locally but not on a remote server
Make sure you are entering commands with server authority. A dedicated server must load its configuration and map correctly, and a client cannot force every server-side rule from the client console. Check the server log and the loaded mode configuration, then restart the map after correcting the file.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The two players spawn in the same side or an unfair location
Review the map first rather than adding unrelated commands. Valve’s documentation treats 1v1 arenas as map features, so spawn positions and sightlines are controlled largely by the selected map or arena section. Switch to a map with clearly opposing spawns and comparable routes, then reapply the same round settings.
Rules that keep a 1v1 fair
- Agree on the map, side selection, weapons and economy before the first scored round.
- Use symmetrical spawns or a map section that gives both players comparable routes and sightlines.
- Decide whether overtime is part of the match or whether the round limit is final.
- Apply the same configuration to a rematch instead of changing timing after one player gains an advantage.
- Keep
sv_cheatsdisabled unless you are deliberately running a separate practice session that requires it. - After a CS2 update, test the command block in an unranked private session before using it for a tournament or recorded result.
The reliable formula is simple: private session, appropriate map, bots removed, warmup ended, agreed round rules, then a restart. The numerical block above is a useful starting point, but the map and the current CS2 build decide whether it behaves exactly as expected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a dedicated server to play CS2 1v1?
No. The cited private-lobby setup is enough for a one-off duel. A dedicated server is optional when you want the match to remain available independently of a player’s local session or need a repeatable environment for several players.
What is the best CS2 1v1 command preset?
There is no Valve-approved universal preset. Start with bot_kick, two seconds of freeze time, a three-second restart delay, mp_roundtime 60, 30 maximum rounds, warmup end, overtime enabled and a one-second match restart. Adjust those values to the map and agreed format.
Does CS2 include a separate 1v1 mode?
No. Valve describes 1v1 warmup arenas on some Competitive and Wingman maps as map features. The map, selected mode and server commands create the practical duel.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does the guide use Competitive and Wingman identifiers?
Valve identifies Competitive as game_type 0, game_mode 1, and Wingman as game_type 0, game_mode 2. These are underlying modes with normal maximums of 10 and four players; they are not automatic 1v1 rulesets.
Should I enable sv_cheats for these settings?
No. The ordinary bot, warmup, timing, round-limit and restart commands are intended for a normal private duel. Leave cheats disabled unless you are deliberately running a separate practice setup that needs a practice-only command.
Can I save my 1v1 settings instead of pasting them every time?
Yes. Valve’s mode documentation describes mode-specific _server.cfg files that can run when a map loads. Exact file handling differs between local games and dedicated servers, so a saved text snippet is the simpler option for occasional matches.
Why did mp_roundtime 60 not produce the timing I expected?
The October 4, 2023 community guide uses 60 as an example, but timing interpretation can vary with the selected map and mode. Watch a complete round, check the console response and adjust only after confirming the rest of the configuration.
What should I do if a workshop 1v1 map disappears?
Workshop availability can change. Check that the map is still available and compatible with the current CS2 build, and keep a fallback map with fair spawns and sightlines rather than relying on one community arena.
The Bottom Line
For most private CS2 1v1s, choose a suitable map, run the example commands without sv_cheats, restart the match and verify the spawns, warmup and round flow. Treat the numbers as adjustable starting values, because map behavior and future CS2 updates can change the result.
