The most reliable Steam Deck setup for Cyberpunk 2077 starts with the official Steam Deck preset at 1280×800, FSR 2.1 set to Balanced, High textures, Low crowd density, and both ray tracing and frame generation disabled. That combination is aimed at a steadier 30 FPS experience: PCGamesN measured about 35 FPS, with occasional mid-40s peaks and rare dips below 30 FPS.
If you prefer a sharper image and can accept heavier drops in demanding areas, use the 40-FPS-oriented profile below: FSR 2.1 Quality with 0.50 sharpening and carefully reduced shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ambient occlusion, mirrors and level of detail. SteamDeckHQ reported mostly smooth 40 FPS in the base game, but Dogtown can fall into the low 30s and as low as 28 FPS. A 30 FPS cap is therefore the more consistent choice across the entire game.

Recommended Steam Deck settings at a glance
Apply these values first if your priority is higher and more consistent frame rates rather than maximum image quality. The resolution remains the Deck panel’s native 1280×800; the performance gain comes from rendering internally at a lower resolution through FSR.

| Resolution | 1280×800 | Matches the native Steam Deck display. |
| Quick Preset | Steam Deck | CD PROJEKT RED’s updated profile is the safe baseline for the hardware. |
| Resolution Scaling | AMD FSR 2.1 | Provides the main performance-versus-sharpness control. |
| FSR Super Resolution | Balanced | Broadest performance target; PCGamesN reported roughly 35 FPS with this profile. |
| Frame Generation | Off | Avoids added latency and frame-pacing artifacts when the underlying frame rate is below the recommended baseline. |
| Texture Quality | High | Preserves surface detail while other options are reduced. |
| Crowd Density | Low | Reduces the CPU and GPU work associated with busy streets. |
| Ray Tracing | Off | Favors frame rate over expensive lighting and reflections. |
How to apply the profile
- Launch Cyberpunk 2077 and open the game’s Settings menu.
- Enter the Graphics section and select the Steam Deck Quick Preset.
- Confirm the display resolution is 1280×800.
- Set Resolution Scaling to AMD FSR 2.1, then choose Balanced under FSR Super Resolution.
- Turn Frame Generation and Ray Tracing off.
- Set Texture Quality to High and Crowd Density to Low.
- Apply the changes, load a demanding save, and play for several minutes before deciding whether to move to the sharper 40-FPS profile.
Changing several options at once makes it difficult to identify which setting helped. Start with this baseline, then change one group of settings at a time.

FSR Balanced versus FSR Quality
Both modes keep the output at 1280×800 while changing the internal render resolution. Balanced lowers the internal workload further and is the sensible starting point when the goal is a stable 30 FPS. Quality renders more detail and usually looks cleaner on fine geometry, but it leaves less performance headroom for crowded streets and large effects.
| Choice | Best use | Image result | Performance behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSR 2.1 Balanced | 30-FPS target and broad coverage | Softer than Quality, especially on distant detail | About 35 FPS in PCGamesN’s report, with occasional mid-40s spikes and rare dips below 30 FPS |
| FSR 2.1 Quality | Sharper 40-FPS-oriented setup | More defined edges and fine detail | Needs the additional reductions in the 40-FPS profile; heavy areas can still fall into the low 30s |
Do not enable frame generation simply to make the displayed number look higher. FSR 3 frame generation creates additional frames from an existing stream of rendered frames; CD PROJEKT RED recommends having at least a 60 FPS baseline before enabling it. The Steam Deck profiles here are designed below that threshold, and PCGamesN reported noticeable input lag from frame generation on Deck.
The sharper 40-FPS-oriented profile
This profile follows SteamDeckHQ’s tested settings. It is intended for players who value a sharper presentation and are willing to accept that the most demanding locations will not hold 40 FPS. Keep a 30 FPS cap in mind if you spend substantial time in Dogtown or find frame-time swings distracting.

SteamDeckHQ reported mostly smooth 40 FPS in the base game with these values. Its test also found that open Dogtown can drop into the low 30s and reach 28 FPS at the low end. Those results make this a targeted profile, not a promise that every scene will remain at 40 FPS.
Why these options are reduced first
- Shadows: Cascaded, distant and local shadow settings affect how much geometry and lighting work is performed over a wide view. Reducing range and resolution limits that cost while retaining medium local shadow detail.
- Volumetrics: Medium fog and disabled clouds preserve some atmosphere without asking the Deck to render every expensive cloud layer at high quality.
- Reflections and ambient occlusion: Medium screen-space reflections and Low ambient occlusion retain depth cues but avoid the highest cost versions of those effects.
- Mirrors and level of detail: Low mirror quality and Medium level of detail prevent secondary views and distant geometry from consuming the same budget as the main scene.
- Textures and anisotropy: The profile leaves texture quality at High and anisotropy at 8×, prioritizing surface clarity over effects that have a larger frame-time impact.
Choosing a 30-FPS or 40-FPS target
| Decision point | 30-FPS profile | 40-FPS-oriented profile |
|---|---|---|
| Primary goal | Consistency throughout the game | Sharper image and higher refresh feel where the scene allows it |
| FSR mode | Balanced | Quality with 0.50 sharpening |
| Expected demanding-area behavior | More headroom; occasional dips below 30 were reported | Base game is mostly smooth at 40, while Dogtown can reach the low 30s or 28 FPS |
| Best cap strategy | 30 FPS for an even frame pace | 40 FPS outside heavy areas; use 30 FPS when Dogtown or other dense scenes are the priority |
| Input latency | Frame Generation off for direct response | Frame Generation off for direct response |
A locked 30 FPS is often preferable to repeatedly crossing between 30 and 40. The lower cap gives the renderer more time for sudden crowds, combat effects and streaming, so camera motion and aiming feel more uniform. Select the 40-FPS profile when you can tolerate those excursions and want the cleaner FSR Quality image.
Why Dogtown runs worse
Dogtown, introduced with the Phantom Liberty expansion, is the known worst-case area in the available testing. SteamDeckHQ’s 40-FPS test stayed mostly smooth in the base game but dropped to the low 30s and as low as 28 FPS in open Dogtown. That is a scene-specific limitation rather than evidence that every part of the game needs the same settings.

When entering Dogtown, lower the frame-rate target instead of immediately sacrificing texture quality. A 30 FPS cap can make traversal and combat feel more consistent than attempting to hold 40 FPS through the busiest open spaces. If you are already using the 30-FPS profile and still see dips, verify that Frame Generation and Ray Tracing remain off, then reduce the most expensive groups in this order: shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ambient occlusion, mirrors and level of detail. Leave High textures as the final compromise whenever possible.
Ray tracing and frame generation: why they stay off
Ray tracing
Ray tracing adds more advanced lighting and reflection calculations, but an FPS-first Steam Deck setup has limited performance headroom. Both recommended profiles turn it off. Re-enabling it is a visual experiment, not a route to higher frame rates; expect to trade away the consistency these profiles are designed to provide.
Frame generation
Frame generation can increase the on-screen frame count, but it does not replace the underlying rendered frames that determine input response. CD PROJEKT RED’s guidance is to begin with at least 60 FPS before enabling FSR 3 frame generation. Neither Steam Deck profile reaches that baseline, and PCGamesN observed noticeable input lag on Deck with frame generation enabled. Keep it off for responsive controls and predictable pacing.

SSD requirement and storage planning
CD PROJEKT RED stated in its 2023 Update 2.0 notes that, because the PC system requirements were updated, running Cyberpunk 2077 from an SSD is now a requirement on Steam Deck. The same update included an updated Steam Deck graphics profile for improved frame-rate stability.
This means storage is part of the performance setup. Install the game on the Deck’s internal SSD or another SSD-based storage solution that the Deck can use; moving the installation to slower storage does not satisfy the stated requirement. The SSD requirement is separate from graphics settings, so changing FSR or shadows cannot compensate for an installation that does not meet it.

CD PROJEKT RED confirmed Steam Deck compatibility verification on February 28, 2023. Verification establishes that the game meets Valve’s compatibility criteria, while the Update 2.0 profile and the tested settings above address how to tune performance within the hardware’s limits. Verification should not be read as a guarantee of a fixed frame rate in every expansion area or scene.

Troubleshooting uneven performance
Frame rate is below the target everywhere
- Confirm the game is installed on an SSD, as required by CD PROJEKT RED’s Update 2.0 guidance.
- Check that the resolution is 1280×800 and Resolution Scaling is AMD FSR 2.1.
- Use FSR Balanced rather than Quality if the 40-FPS profile is not holding its target.
- Verify Ray Tracing and Frame Generation are both off.
Performance is acceptable in most places but collapses in Dogtown
- Use a 30 FPS cap for the expansion’s open areas.
- Reduce shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ambient occlusion, mirrors and level of detail before lowering texture quality.
- Judge the result during movement through open Dogtown, not only in an interior or quiet corridor.
The image looks too soft
- Move from FSR Balanced to FSR Quality and use the 40-FPS-oriented values, including 0.50 sharpening.
- Keep textures High and anisotropy at 8× in that profile; those settings preserve surface definition without turning on ray tracing.
- If the sharper profile causes frequent drops, return to Balanced rather than enabling frame generation.
Controls feel delayed
Ensure Frame Generation is off. The available Deck testing found noticeable input lag with it enabled, and the official 60-FPS prerequisite is above the frame rates targeted here.
A practical tuning order
Use this order when you want to customize either profile without losing track of the trade-off:
- Choose the target: 30 FPS for coverage or 40 FPS for a sharper, less forgiving setup.
- Select FSR Balanced for the 30-FPS target or FSR Quality with 0.50 sharpening for the 40-FPS target.
- Keep Ray Tracing and Frame Generation off.
- Set Crowd Density Low.
- Reduce shadows, then volumetric fog and clouds.
- Reduce screen-space reflections, ambient occlusion, mirrors and level of detail.
- Test in a demanding outdoor scene, including Dogtown if you own Phantom Liberty.
- Only after those steps consider lowering Texture Quality from High, because the recommended profiles deliberately preserve texture detail.
Which profile should you use?
Choose the official-preset profile with FSR Balanced if you want the least complicated setup, the broadest performance margin and a sensible 30 FPS cap. Choose the SteamDeckHQ 40-FPS-oriented profile if image sharpness matters more and you are comfortable with low-30s performance in Dogtown. In both cases, the essential choices are the same: native 1280×800 output, an SSD installation, Low crowds, no ray tracing and no frame generation.
