Best Cyberpunk 2077 Settings for Smooth Co-op Performance and Voice Chat

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Cyberpunk 2077 has no officially documented native co-op mode or in-game voice-chat channel. The smooth way for friends to play “together” is for each person to run their own single-player session while using a platform party chat or desktop voice application. On PC, install the game on an SSD, begin with a preset appropriate to your hardware, leave ray tracing and path tracing off while you establish stable frame times, and lower Crowd Density first if busy districts cause stutter. A wired or low-latency USB headset with a clear microphone completes the setup.

The settings below follow CD PROJEKT RED’s published PC targets and its Update 2.0 graphics changes. They are a tuning baseline, not a guaranteed frame-rate promise: the company states that performance varies with hardware, software, settings and output resolution.

What “co-op” means in Cyberpunk 2077

Official Cyberpunk 2077 feature material describes a story-driven game built around V, gigs, skills and combat. It does not document networked co-op, shared missions or an in-game voice channel. That means friends cannot join one another’s retail game world through a supported multiplayer menu.

The supported way to play alongside friends

Each player launches their own copy, chooses their own save and coordinates over an external voice service. You can agree on a district, quest, build, challenge or play session, but progress, enemies and inventories remain separate. Treat the arrangement as parallel single-player sessions rather than synchronized multiplayer.

What REDmod does—and does not do

REDmod is CD PROJEKT RED’s official tool for creating and loading Cyberpunk 2077 modifications. Its compatibility is maintained alongside game updates, but the toolset is not an officially supported co-op system. Community multiplayer projects, where available, are experimental and version-sensitive; their synchronization, voice features and compatibility can change after a game or mod update. Do not rely on them for a stable retail co-op experience.

Official PC targets and what they imply

CD PROJEKT RED’s updated requirements publish three non-ray-tracing performance targets. They are requirement figures from the developer, not independent benchmark results. Use the closest row to your hardware as a starting point, then verify frame-time consistency in the places where you normally play.

Target Published output and frame rate How to use it
Minimum 1080p at 30 FPS on Low Start with Low, keep ray tracing disabled and prioritize a consistent 30 FPS over visual effects.
Recommended 1080p at 60 FPS on High High is a sensible first preset only when your PC is close to the recommended hardware tier.
Ultra 2160p at 60 FPS on Ultra, with a high-end CPU and GPU and 20 GB of RAM Use this as a premium raster target; it is not a realistic baseline for every 4K system.
Ray tracing and Overdrive Separate, heavier hardware tiers Stabilize ordinary raster performance first. Path tracing/Overdrive is a quality mode, not the starting point for a smooth baseline.

Why an SSD is a requirement

Current PC support requires an SSD. CD PROJEKT RED says SSDs provide faster loading, improved streaming and better overall performance than hard-disk drives. If you are buying or upgrading storage, an NVMe SSD is the practical choice. The published Ultra target specifies a 70 GB NVMe SSD. Installing on an HDD can add streaming and loading delays that no graphics preset can fully correct.

How to read the frame-rate numbers

The 30 FPS, 60 FPS and 2160p figures describe the developer’s target conditions for their corresponding hardware tiers. They do not promise that every scene will hold the number on every PC. Resolution, driver and operating-system software, background workloads and individual settings can all change the result. Judge a setup by repeatable frame-time behavior in a busy district, during combat and while driving—not by a brief peak shown by an uncapped counter.

Best settings workflow for a smooth session

Make one class of change at a time. This keeps it clear which setting solved a problem and avoids chasing a fluctuating benchmark.

  1. Install Cyberpunk 2077 on an SSD. Confirm the game library points to the SSD before changing graphics options. Prefer NVMe when adding storage, and leave the game enough free space for updates.
  2. Match the display resolution to your goal. Use the monitor’s native resolution when image clarity is the priority. If the GPU cannot maintain the desired frame rate, lowering output resolution is a direct performance lever because CD PROJEKT RED identifies resolution as a performance variable.
  3. Select a realistic starting preset. Choose High only when the PC is near the official recommended 1080p/60 tier. Otherwise begin at Medium or Low. Raise individual groups later instead of assuming a preset designed for stronger hardware will be stable.
  4. Turn ray tracing off initially. Leave ray-traced effects and path tracing/Overdrive disabled until the non-ray-traced preset holds consistent frame times. The official requirements assign materially stronger hardware to those modes.
  5. Test a repeatable route. Walk or drive through a dense district, enter a busy interior and trigger a short fight. Note average FPS, obvious hitching and how quickly frames recover after a turn. Repeat the same route after each change.
  6. Adjust Crowd Density if cities stutter. In Update 2.0 and later, open the Graphics tab and change Crowd Density independently of the overall preset. Lower it one step when frame times worsen around pedestrians and traffic; leave other visual settings unchanged while testing.
  7. Use supported upscaling or frame generation only when appropriate. Enable an option only if your GPU and display support it, then inspect motion clarity and frame-time consistency. A larger FPS number is not automatically smoother if generated frames add artifacts or uneven pacing.
  8. Add visual quality gradually. Raise one setting group, repeat the same route and keep the change only if the frame-time cost fits your target. Save ray tracing and path tracing for the end of the process.

Choosing settings by the bottleneck you see

Busy streets and crowded districts: treat this as a CPU-side problem first

When the game feels smooth in open areas but hitches as pedestrians and traffic accumulate, Crowd Density is the first controlled adjustment. Update 2.0 exposes it in the Graphics tab so you do not have to abandon the rest of your preset. Lower it, retest the same district and stop when frame-time spikes are acceptable. This preserves more image quality than immediately dropping the display resolution.

If the dense-area hitch remains, keep the reduced crowd setting while checking for background software or other CPU-heavy tasks. The official requirements do not provide a universal crowd-performance figure, so the useful result is the setting that produces stable pacing on your particular processor.

Low FPS at your normal resolution: establish a raster baseline

Start with ray tracing and path tracing off, then use Low or Medium if the High preset exceeds your hardware’s target. Lowering output resolution is the next broad GPU lever. Once the ordinary raster path is stable, raise one visual group at a time and repeat the route. This order prevents expensive effects from masking a more basic performance limit.

Ray-tracing dips: decide whether quality is worth the frame-time cost

Ray tracing has separate, heavier hardware tiers in the official requirements. If enabling it causes drops below your chosen target, disable it rather than compensating with an uncapped counter. Path tracing/Overdrive is more demanding still and is best treated as a premium screenshot or high-end experience mode, not as the default for a smooth group session.

Upscaling and frame generation: check support and pacing

Use the game’s supported upscaling or frame-generation controls only on compatible hardware and a compatible display. Compare motion in a busy street, during a quick camera turn and in combat. Keep the option when it improves consistency without unacceptable image artifacts; turn it off when the displayed FPS rises but input response or pacing feels worse. Update 2.0 documents DLSS 3.5 Ray Reconstruction for path tracing and notes that it requires a GeForce RTX GPU, so that feature is not a universal setting for every system.

A practical preset decision table

Your starting point Preset and effects First adjustment When to add quality
Near the minimum 1080p/30 tier Low; ray tracing and path tracing off Keep resolution at the intended target, then lower Crowd Density if dense areas hitch Only after the demanding route holds your 30 FPS goal
Between minimum and recommended hardware Medium; ray tracing off Test resolution and Crowd Density before raising individual effects Raise one group at a time while watching frame-time consistency
Near the recommended 1080p/60 tier High; ray tracing off initially Use Crowd Density for city CPU spikes Try selected ray-traced effects only after raster 60 FPS is stable
High-end CPU/GPU with 20 GB RAM and an NVMe SSD Ultra at 2160p/60 is the published premium raster target Verify the target in dense districts and combat Experiment with ray tracing or Overdrive as optional quality modes

External voice chat that does not undermine game performance

Since the game does not document an internal voice channel, use a platform party-chat feature or a desktop voice application while everyone runs a separate session. Keep the voice application on the same device only if your system has enough headroom; if running it alongside the game causes noticeable frame-time spikes, move the conversation to a console or phone party instead.

Headset choice

  • A wired headset avoids battery management and usually adds little monitoring delay.
  • A low-latency USB headset is a practical alternative when your computer lacks a clean analog input.
  • Choose a microphone with a clear pickup pattern and position it just off the corner of your mouth to reduce breath and keyboard noise.
  • Use the headset’s own mute control or the voice application’s push-to-talk setting when you need to discuss something privately.

Microphone and output checks

  1. Select the intended microphone and headset in the operating system before launching the session.
  2. Use the voice application’s input meter or test call to confirm that speech reaches the meter without clipping.
  3. Set a comfortable output level, then ask a friend to confirm that your voice is clear while game audio is playing.
  4. If voices become robotic or cut out, lower the application’s input sensitivity threshold, close unnecessary network-heavy programs and retest before changing game graphics.

Dolby Atmos is optional

CD PROJEKT RED’s requirements state that a PC audio solution containing Dolby Atmos is required for a Dolby Atmos experience. That requirement applies to the optional spatial-audio mode, not to ordinary voice chat. A standard stereo or USB headset with a correctly selected microphone is sufficient for talking with friends.

Troubleshooting guide

Symptom Likely cause to test Action
Stutter appears mainly in crowded districts CPU load from pedestrians and traffic Open Graphics, lower Crowd Density, repeat the same route and keep the change only if frame times improve.
Performance is poor everywhere Preset, resolution or effects exceed the hardware tier Return to Low or Medium, disable ray tracing and path tracing, then test at the intended resolution before raising settings.
Frame rate collapses after enabling ray tracing The ray-tracing tier requires stronger hardware Disable ray tracing for the smooth baseline; reintroduce individual effects only after raster performance is stable.
4K Ultra target is inconsistent The system may not match the high-end CPU/GPU and 20 GB RAM context Lower the output resolution or preset and verify performance in demanding areas rather than relying on the published target alone.
Long loads or streaming pauses occur from an HDD install Storage does not meet current SSD guidance Move the installation to an SSD, preferably NVMe, then retest before changing graphics.
Voice is muffled, clipped or doubled Wrong input device, excessive sensitivity or open speakers Select the headset microphone explicitly, run a voice test, reduce sensitivity and use headphones instead of speakers.
Voice chat works but the game hitches Voice software or background tasks competing for system resources Close unnecessary applications, reduce their overlays or move the call to another device; do not lower game quality blindly until you have isolated the cause.

How to organize a reliable friends’ session

  1. Agree on the external voice service and a backup contact method before launching.
  2. Have every player verify the headset microphone and output in a short test call.
  3. Use the same session goal—such as exploring a district or comparing builds—while accepting that each save advances independently.
  4. Choose a shared performance target, such as a stable 30 FPS or 60 FPS, rather than asking every PC to use the same preset.
  5. Ask anyone with city stutter to lower Crowd Density first; ask anyone with broad GPU pressure to disable ray tracing or lower resolution.
  6. After a game update, recheck mods and graphics settings. REDmod and community projects can be version-sensitive, and an update may change compatibility.

Bottom line

For the smoothest Cyberpunk 2077 “co-op” experience, run separate single-player sessions, coordinate through an external voice service and use a clear wired or low-latency USB headset. Install on an SSD, select Low, Medium or High according to the official 1080p targets, keep ray tracing and Overdrive off while establishing stable frame times, and lower Crowd Density first when crowded streets cause CPU-related stutter. Treat the published 30 FPS, 60 FPS and 4K Ultra figures as hardware-specific targets—not guarantees—and tune for consistent pacing in the scenes you actually play.
