Cyberpunk 2077 belongs on the list for its large, cinematic world and consequential relationships, but it is still an action-adventure RPG in which combat is a major activity. Quick comparison
The games below all use cyberpunk ideas, but they deliver their stories in very different ways. “Less combat” does not mean the same thing in each case: one game may replace fights with dialogue, another with investigation, another with stealth, while a larger action RPG may merely offer non-lethal approaches to some encounters.

| Game | Combat expectation | Primary way the story is delivered | Role-playing and choice | Setting fit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Red Strings Club | Very low emphasis | Dialogue and character interaction | Conversation-led decisions | Direct cyberpunk | Players who want a focused narrative adventure |
| Disco Elysium: The Final Cut | Low emphasis compared with investigation | Detective work, exploration, dialogue and internal role-playing | Extensive role-playing choices | Cyberpunk-adjacent, politically charged science fiction | Readers who value writing and investigation above action |
| Citizen Sleeper | Not the central activity | Survival decisions and relationships | Meaningful personal and social choices | Cyberpunk science fiction | Players who want a character-driven role-playing story |
| Neon Struct | Stealth reduces direct confrontation | Surveillance narrative and sneaking | Choice expressed through approach and information | Direct cyberpunk | Players who want tension without constant gunfights |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | Frequent; combat is a major pillar | Open-world missions, dialogue, exploration and action | Relationships and choices shape story and world | Direct cyberpunk megacity | Players willing to accept action for a larger cinematic experience |
| Shadowrun: Dragonfall | Frequent tactical, turn-based battles | Party-based missions, dialogue and tactical encounters | Character and story choices matter | Cyberpunk-fantasy | Players who enjoy turn-based combat as part of the narrative |
For the smallest combat footprint, begin with The Red Strings Club, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut or Citizen Sleeper. Move to Neon Struct if you specifically want stealth. Select Cyberpunk 2077 only if you are comfortable with regular action, and pick Shadowrun: Dragonfall when tactical battles are a feature rather than a drawback.

The Red Strings Club: the clearest dialogue-first recommendation
Why it fits
The Red Strings Club is the most direct answer for someone asking for a cyberpunk game in which talking matters more than fighting. PC Gamer describes it as focused on “dialogue and character interaction over puzzles.” That emphasis makes conversations, personalities and the consequences of what people say the main source of momentum, rather than a sequence of combat arenas.
The game works best when you want a contained story with a strong atmosphere and a small cast you can get to know. Its cyberpunk identity is not merely decorative: the social pressure, technology and ethical conflicts are presented through interactions between characters. You spend your attention reading situations and deciding how to respond, not managing a weapons build.
What to expect from the structure
- Story delivery: primarily dialogue and character interaction, with puzzles playing a supporting role.
- Combat: not the reason to play; the design emphasis is conversational rather than battle-driven.
- Choice: decisions are expressed through how you engage with people and the information they reveal.
- Setting: a focused cyberpunk world rather than a sprawling open-world tour.
Who should choose it
Choose this first if your ideal cyberpunk experience is closer to an interactive drama than a shooter. It is also a good palate cleanser after a long action RPG: the scale is more intimate, and the central question is what people will do to one another rather than how efficiently you can defeat a room of enemies.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut: investigation as the main verb
Why it fits
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is best understood as a detective role-playing game, not as a conventional neon-city cyberpunk adventure. PlayStation’s official description follows a detective investigating a murder in Revachol and highlights exploration, role-playing choices and full voiceover. That framing is important: its appeal is the investigation and the act of inhabiting a damaged, opinionated character, not a familiar combat loop.
You advance by examining places, questioning people, interpreting evidence and deciding what kind of detective you are. The role-playing is unusually tied to thought, personality and judgment. A choice can change the direction of an inquiry or reveal a different way to understand the people around you, so the story remains active even when no physical threat is present.

- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
How it compares with a conventional cyberpunk game
- Atmosphere: it has speculative technology and social decay, but its identity is more political and investigative than “neon city plus gunfights.”
- Story delivery: dialogue, exploration, deduction and the protagonist’s internal role-playing dominate.
- Combat: action is not the organizing activity; the core loop is solving a case and making interpretive choices.
- Choice: central. Your role-playing decisions determine how the detective thinks, speaks and pursues the investigation.
Edition and platform note
PlayStation’s official listing identifies Disco Elysium: The Final Cut for PS4 and PS5, with a release date of March 30, 2021. Storefront listings and prices can change, so confirm the live platform and edition before buying: PlayStation’s official game page.
Who should choose it
Pick it when “story” means writing, investigation and role-playing freedom rather than cinematic gunplay. If you need a literal high-tech megacity or want to sneak through guarded facilities, another recommendation here will fit more closely.

Citizen Sleeper: survival and relationships instead of firefights
Why it fits
Citizen Sleeper is a narrative-forward cyberpunk role-playing game in which survival and relationships are central concerns. Its pressure comes from deciding how to spend limited opportunities, whom to trust and which connections to maintain. That gives the game a strong sense of urgency without making combat the default way to resolve a problem.
The structure supports a reader who wants to live in a setting rather than simply pass through it on the way to the next mission. Conversations and personal commitments carry weight because they affect the character’s prospects and the people sharing the station or community. The resulting story is about identity, precarious work, loyalty and the practical cost of staying alive.
Its particular kind of role-playing
- Survival: day-to-day decisions create the immediate stakes.
- Relationships: personal connections are a central source of story, not optional flavor.
- Choice: you shape the protagonist’s priorities and alliances through repeated decisions.
- Combat expectation: the game’s defining concerns are survival and relationships, so it is a better match for low-combat readers than a battle-led RPG.
Who should choose it
Choose Citizen Sleeper if you want a cyberpunk story that feels intimate and systemic: the drama grows from routines, obligations and relationships rather than from clearing enemies. It is especially suitable if you enjoy role-playing games that ask what your character can afford to do, whom they can help and what they must sacrifice.

Neon Struct: stealth and surveillance for players who still want tension
Why it fits
Neon Struct combines a story about surveillance with stealth-focused play. That makes it the middle ground between a dialogue adventure and an action game: you still move through spaces under pressure, but the intended answer is to observe, hide and slip past danger rather than treat every obstacle as a firefight.

Its cyberpunk premise is tied directly to the way you play. Surveillance is not just background lore; information, visibility and exposure determine how safe your movement is. The tension comes from being watched and deciding when to move, what to learn and how much risk to accept.
How it reduces combat without removing danger
- Stealth-first problem solving: guarded areas are approached through concealment and timing.
- Surveillance story: the narrative subject and the mechanics reinforce each other.
- Combat expectation: it is a better fit for avoiding direct confrontation than for mastering a weapon system.
- Choice: your route, patience and willingness to gather information shape the experience.
Who should choose it
Pick Neon Struct when you want the nervous energy of infiltration but do not want constant shooting. It will suit players who enjoy reading a space, planning a route and staying unseen. If even stealth pressure sounds like too much action, the dialogue and investigation games above are safer choices.
Cyberpunk 2077: a story-rich world that is still combat-heavy
What it delivers
Cyberpunk 2077 is the scale pick. CD PROJEKT RED describes its games as having “a deep focus on storytelling,” while its official game framing calls this an “open world role-playing game set in the most dangerous city of the future.” Bandai Namco describes it as “an open-world, action-adventure RPG set in the megalopolis of Night City.” Those descriptions capture both halves of the experience: a large, choice-driven world and a substantial action component.
The story includes relationships and decisions with consequences. The official description says, “The relationships you forge and the choices you make will shape the story and the world around you.” That makes it a legitimate recommendation for players who want character arcs and agency, but it does not make the game low-combat.

Why it may still be the wrong fit
Combat appears frequently enough that avoiding it altogether is not a realistic expectation. The official gameplay page explicitly presents three approaches: “Engage in guns-blazing combat, strike down enemies from a distance, or stealth your way through carefully guarded locations.” Hacking and stealth can change how some encounters unfold, yet they are alternatives inside an action-adventure RPG, not a replacement for the game’s action foundation.
- Best feature for story-focused players: a large open world in which choices and relationships influence the narrative.
- Best feature for low-combat players: hacking, ranged options and stealth can let you approach selected locations differently.
- Main limitation: missions and progression still expect regular action.
- Setting fit: direct, high-density cyberpunk in Night City rather than cyberpunk-adjacent science fiction.
How to play it if you dislike constant firefights
- Favor stealth and hacking when a mission allows it. The official gameplay description confirms that sneaking through guarded locations is a supported approach.
- Use distance and information to control encounters. Ranged attacks and hacking can reduce the need to rush into a room.
- Accept that some action is part of the package. Do not buy it expecting a dialogue adventure; choose it for the combination of story, exploration and flexible combat approaches.
Edition and physical-release note
The publisher’s official information describes a physical Day 1 Edition with PS4 and Xbox One discs, a world compendium, postcards, a map and stickers. It also describes an Ultimate Edition containing game updates and previously released content, including Phantom Liberty. Those details do not establish current stock or availability in every market; verify the exact platform, edition and listing before purchase. See the official Cyberpunk 2077 page for the publisher’s edition descriptions.
Who should choose it
Choose Cyberpunk 2077 when you want the biggest world and can tolerate action as the price of entry. It is the strongest option here for a cinematic, open-world story, but not the strongest option for someone whose priority is minimizing combat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Shadowrun: Dragonfall: choose it when tactics are part of the appeal
Why it fits some cyberpunk readers
Shadowrun: Dragonfall blends cyberpunk with fantasy and presents its conflicts through tactical, turn-based combat. That combination gives it a distinctive genre identity: technology, corporations and urban noir sit alongside a broader fantasy setting, while battles ask you to plan turns and manage a party rather than react in real time.
Its story and dialogue can appeal to role-playing fans, but the tactical encounters are not occasional interruptions. They are a major part of how the game expresses danger, progression and decision-making. For a reader who wants “less combat,” that distinction matters more than the fact that the battles are turn-based.
Best Value
Decision points
- Combat expectation: frequent tactical, turn-based battles.
- Story delivery: narrative missions and dialogue are interwoven with combat encounters.
- Role-playing: party and character decisions matter, but tactical planning remains central.
- Setting: cyberpunk-fantasy rather than a strictly technological cyberpunk city.
Who should choose it
Choose it if you want a strong cyberpunk-fantasy setting and enjoy combat as a thinking exercise. Skip it for this particular brief if your ideal session contains only occasional danger and mostly conversation or investigation.
Which game matches your preferred kind of story?
“I want almost no combat.”
Start with The Red Strings Club. If you also want a deeper role-playing investigation, choose Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. If survival pressure and relationships sound more appealing than detective work, choose Citizen Sleeper.
“I want stealth, not a dialogue-only adventure.”
Choose Neon Struct. It keeps physical tension and movement while making surveillance and evasion the focus. Cyberpunk 2077 can support stealth approaches too, but its overall combat burden is much higher.

Choose Cyberpunk 2077, provided you accept frequent action. Its open-world Night City setting is the broadest and most cinematic option in this group.
“I want tactics, even if that means many battles.”
Choose Shadowrun: Dragonfall. Its turn-based structure makes combat deliberate, not scarce.
“I care more about writing than strict genre purity.”
Choose Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. It is a detective RPG with a speculative, socially charged setting, so it satisfies the desire for rich role-playing and investigation without being a conventional neon-city cyberpunk game.
How to avoid the most common mismatch
- Do not equate “story-rich” with “low combat.” Cyberpunk 2077 has consequential choices and relationships while remaining an action-adventure RPG.
- Do not equate “cyberpunk” with one visual style. Disco Elysium is cyberpunk-adjacent and investigative; Shadowrun: Dragonfall adds fantasy; the others lean more directly into cyberpunk premises.
- Do not assume turn-based means infrequent. Shadowrun: Dragonfall uses turn-based tactics, but battles are still a substantial part of play.
- Do not treat stealth as the same as no action. Neon Struct replaces many direct confrontations with tension, concealment and surveillance rather than removing pressure entirely.
- Check the exact edition before buying. Physical contents, platform listings and availability can differ by market and can change after a page is published.
Final recommendation
For the cleanest match to “more story and less combat,” choose The Red Strings Club. Choose Disco Elysium: The Final Cut for the richest detective role-playing, Citizen Sleeper for relationship-driven survival, and Neon Struct for stealth tension. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 only when its open-world scale and cinematic story justify accepting frequent combat, and choose Shadowrun: Dragonfall when tactical battles are something you actively want.
