Its Discover page uses similar interests, dating goals and communities, while profiles can include up to five selected interests. Hinge is a strong alternative when you would rather show your hobbies through prompts and signal the kind of first date you would enjoy. OkCupid suits people who are willing to answer detailed compatibility questions, and HER combines dating with LGBTQ+ community features and events.
These are feature-based recommendations, not proof that one service creates better matches or longer-lasting relationships. The best choice depends on which interest signals you will actually complete, how active the local pool is, and whether the app’s features are available in your area.

Which dating app matches people by interests?
If explicit interest-based discovery is your priority, start with Bumble. Bumble says its Discover recommendations can show members with similar interests, the same dating goals and communities in common. Its support documentation also says recommendations refresh daily, with four people highlighted as specially recommended from profile information and prior matches.

HER is designed for lesbian, bisexual and queer people and adds group discussions, Communities and Events alongside dating.

Bumble: best for explicit interest-based discovery
What Bumble actually uses
Bumble’s Discover page is the most direct match for the search question “What dating app matches people by interests?” Bumble describes Discover as a place where members are shown people with similar interests, the same dating goals and communities in common. That is a discovery feature, not merely a way to decorate your profile.
Bumble also lets you select up to five interests on your profile. Bumble Support recommends keeping those choices up to date. Five slots mean you need to choose the interests that best represent the conversations or activities you genuinely want to share, rather than listing every passing curiosity.
How recommendations change
Bumble Support says Discover recommendations refresh daily. Four new people are highlighted as specially recommended, using information in profiles and prior matches. A recommendation therefore reflects both what you have stated and how you have interacted with the service; it is not a permanent, one-time list.
Rank #2
When evaluating Bumble, look for whether the daily recommendations actually contain people whose interests are specific enough to discuss. “Music” or “travel” may be a starting point, but a profile that names a genre, venue, route or recurring activity gives you more to work with. That is a practical profile-reading rule, not a claim that Bumble ranks interests by depth.
Who should choose Bumble
- Choose Bumble first if you want an app to make shared-interest discovery visible in its recommendation surface.
- It is useful when matching on dating goals or community overlap matters alongside hobbies.
- It is less suitable if you want the app itself to present a menu of first-date activities; the cited Bumble material does not describe that control.
Hinge: best for interest-rich profiles and date-activity signaling
Prompts and recommendation signals
Hinge gives you more room to explain why an interest matters. Its profile prompts can turn a hobby into a conversation starter: describe the game you always replay, the kind of concert you seek out or the weekend project you would invite someone to join. Hinge says its recommendation system combines stated preferences with activity on the app. The company introduced a deep-learning recommendation system in 2025 and says recommendations reflect compatibility settings, dealbreakers and past behavior.

Your profile tells another person what you enjoy; your stated settings and activity help shape whom the system recommends. Do not assume that mentioning an interest guarantees recommendations based on it—the company describes a combination of signals rather than a single hobby-matching switch.
Date Ideas: a concrete way to show readiness
Hinge’s Date Ideas feature lets you feature three preferred first-date activities, with one custom option. Listed choices include drinks, coffee or tea, dinner, a walk, dessert, a movie, live music, mini golf, trivia night, a picnic, a museum, karaoke, bowling, an arcade and thrifting.
Selecting activities communicates both an interest and a practical preference. Someone who also chooses a museum or trivia night has an immediate opening for a message, while a custom choice can make a more specific hobby visible. Date Ideas signals interest and intention; it does not automatically arrange a date or confirm that another person is available.

Hinge’s April 22, 2026 announcement quoted Chief Product and Technology Officer Ben Celebicic: “Dating is ultimately about moving beyond the screen and connecting in real life, so we’re focused on building experiences that help people recognize mutual interest earlier and take that next step with confidence.” Lead Relationship Scientist Logan Ury described the uncertainty the feature is intended to address: “Asking someone out is nerve-wracking. What if they’re not ready to meet up? What if you suggest the wrong plan?”
What the 54% figure means
Hinge reported that 54% of Hinge daters in its Date Ideas test said the feature made them feel more confident asking someone out. Hinge Labs surveyed more than 700 global respondents who participated in the test in March 2026. This is company research about reported confidence among test participants; it is not evidence that Date Ideas causes more dates, better matches or lasting relationships.
Availability to check
Hinge said Date Ideas was available in English in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia as of April 22, 2026. Availability can change by market, language or account, so confirm that the control appears in your current app before building your choice around it.
OkCupid: best for questionnaire-led compatibility
OkCupid is the feature match for people who prefer answering questions to selecting a small set of interest tags. Apple’s US App Store editorial guide describes detailed questionnaires that the service uses to calculate a compatibility score.
A questionnaire can help you express preferences that do not fit neatly into a hobby label. It also requires more effort: the usefulness of a questionnaire-led profile depends on answering enough questions honestly and revisiting answers when your priorities change. The cited material establishes the questionnaire and compatibility-score approach, but not the score’s predictive accuracy or any independent relationship outcome.

How to use OkCupid for shared interests
- Answer the questions that reflect real lifestyle choices, not the answers you think will attract the most people.
- Look at the questions or explanations behind a compatibility result instead of treating a percentage as a verdict.
- Use your written profile to add concrete examples of activities you would actually discuss or do.
- Compare several profiles before deciding whether the questionnaire produces the kind of detail you wanted.
Choose OkCupid when the act of comparing answers is itself valuable to you. If you want an app to surface people through a dedicated interest-discovery page or a first-date activity menu, Bumble or Hinge provides the more explicit feature fit described here.
HER: best for LGBTQ+ dating plus community participation
Apple’s US App Store editorial guide describes HER as designed for lesbian, bisexual and queer people. It also lists group discussions, Communities and Events. Those features make HER relevant when “shared interests” includes participating in a community, not only matching on a profile hobby.
Community discussions can give you a place to notice recurring topics and local activity before deciding whom to message. Events add another way to engage around a shared context. The guide does not establish how many events are available in a particular city, how active a local group is or whether community participation leads to better dating outcomes, so inspect the current listings in your area.
How to evaluate HER locally
- Check whether the Communities and Events sections contain current activity relevant to your interests.
- Read the format and participation expectations for a group before posting personal details.
- Use dating profiles and community spaces for different purposes: a shared discussion topic is an opener, not proof of personal compatibility.
HER should not be treated as the only option for LGBTQ+ readers. It is one service to compare when its audience focus and community tools match what you want from dating.

How to choose an app when hobbies matter most
1. Decide what “shared interests” means to you
There are at least four different goals hidden in that phrase:
Best Value
- Discovery: you want the service to recommend people with overlapping interests. Bumble’s Discover description is the clearest fit.
- Conversation: you want enough profile detail to explain what you enjoy. Hinge prompts are designed for this kind of signal.
- Compatibility: you want to compare answers across many questions. OkCupid’s questionnaire model fits that preference.
- Community: you want dating alongside groups, discussions or events. HER’s listed features address this combination, especially for its intended LGBTQ+ audience.
2. Build interest signals that another person can use
Choose a few interests you can discuss in a sentence or turn into a realistic plan. Replace broad labels with a detail that creates a question: a favorite style, a regular venue, a route, a game format or a project you are learning. Do not claim expertise or enthusiasm you cannot sustain in conversation. A shared interest only helps if both people can recognize what they actually have in common.
3. Test the recommendation experience, not just the marketing description
- Complete the interest, prompt or questionnaire fields that are relevant to your goal.
- Review a sample of recommendations or profiles over several days rather than judging from one session. Bumble says Discover refreshes daily, so a single screen is not the whole recommendation cycle.
- Record whether profiles contain specific, current interests and whether those interests give you natural openings to message.
- Check whether your preferred date activity is represented. Hinge offers an explicit Date Ideas control; the cited Bumble, OkCupid and HER descriptions do not document an equivalent picker.
- Keep the app that produces conversations you would genuinely want to continue, not the one with the largest-looking list.
4. Check local activity and feature availability
Feature design does not tell you how many suitable people are nearby. Search your actual area, inspect recent profiles and look for current community or event activity where relevant. The available evidence does not establish local user-pool size or success rates for any of these apps.
Also verify that a feature is enabled for your account and market. Hinge’s Date Ideas launch statement named the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia for English-language availability as of April 22, 2026; other locations or later app versions may differ.

What these apps cannot guarantee
A shared hobby is a useful opening, not a guarantee of shared values, chemistry, safety or relationship success. None of the cited sources independently demonstrates that Bumble, Hinge, OkCupid or HER produces better matches or longer-lasting relationships than the others.
Recommendation systems also use different inputs. Bumble describes interests, dating goals, communities, profile information and prior matches. Hinge describes preferences, dealbreakers, compatibility settings and in-app behavior. OkCupid’s cited description centers on questionnaire answers and a compatibility score. HER’s cited description emphasizes dating together with discussions, Communities and Events. These mechanisms are not directly comparable test results.
Pricing and paid features
Do not choose solely on an assumed subscription price. Product pages and Apple’s guide mention paid features, but current prices, plan names and regional offers were not verified for this comparison. Open the official listing for your country and review the checkout terms before subscribing. A paid tier may change visibility or access, but the supplied evidence does not establish that paying improves shared-interest match quality or relationship outcomes.
Decision guide
| Your priority | Start by evaluating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Recommendations explicitly based on interests | Bumble | Discover is described as recommending people with similar interests, dating goals and communities, with daily refreshes. |
| Showing hobbies through answers and choosing a first-date activity | Hinge | Prompts communicate what you enjoy, while Date Ideas lets you feature three activities and one custom option. |
| Comparing detailed answers | OkCupid | Apple’s guide describes detailed questionnaires used to calculate a compatibility score. |
| Dating plus LGBTQ+ community spaces | HER | Apple’s guide describes an app for lesbian, bisexual and queer people with group discussions, Communities and Events. |
Bottom line
Start with Bumble if your first question is “Who nearby shares my interests?” Its Discover design and five-interest profile field make that goal explicit. Pick Hinge if you want to explain your interests in your own words and make a preferred first-date activity visible. Choose OkCupid if answering compatibility questions is more useful than browsing interest tags. Compare HER when LGBTQ+ dating and community participation belong in the same experience.
Whichever app you test, judge it by the specificity of local profiles and the quality of conversations you can start—not by a compatibility label, a recommendation badge or a company-reported confidence statistic.
