The best Dead by Daylight settings for smoother Haunted by Daylight matches are a stable frame-rate cap, native resolution, reduced shadows and effects, textures kept as high as your VRAM can stream without hitching, and carefully calibrated Brightness/Gamma. Start with those changes, then measure 1% lows in one normal match and one event match instead of chasing an uncapped FPS number.

This guide answers the practical questions players ask: “What are the best DBD settings for Haunted by Daylight?”, “How do I stop FPS drops and stutter in DBD during the Halloween event?”, and “What graphics settings make dark Haunted by Daylight maps easier to see?” The event does not change the scoring rules through graphics options, and no single setting guarantees the same FPS improvement on every PC or console.

Quick answer: the settings that matter most

Haunted by Daylight is visually darker and busier than an ordinary trial, so consistency is more valuable than a briefly high headline FPS. Use your display’s native resolution first. Set a cap that your system can hold through a chase, a crowded hook area, and event effects; a locked 60, 90, or 120 FPS can feel better than an uncapped rate that swings between those values. The numbers are examples, not universal targets.

Profile Frame-time stability Dark-scene readability Silhouette and effect clarity Input latency Image quality
Competitive Highest priority: low shadows, effects, foliage and post-processing, with a stable cap Gamma calibrated high enough to reveal corners without washing out contrast Anti-aliasing at the lowest level that keeps survivor and killer outlines readable Usually the most consistent because the GPU has headroom Native resolution retained; lower detail settings are visible
Balanced Stable cap with medium preset as a starting point Same Brightness/Gamma calibration as Competitive Textures and selected effects kept higher if frame time remains even Good, provided event matches do not produce spikes Higher textures and effects than Competitive
Visual Only acceptable after an event match confirms stable frame time Gamma must still preserve shadow detail and contrast Higher effects and foliage can make event activity more attractive but busier Can worsen if the GPU is saturated Highest settings your hardware can sustain without streaming hitching

These are decision profiles, not benchmark results. Hardware, drivers, resolution, cooling, background software and the current game build all change the outcome.

Measure a baseline before changing anything

Changing five options at once makes it impossible to identify the cause of a hitch. Record a short baseline first. Use the same display mode and resolution you normally play, then run one ordinary trial and one Haunted by Daylight trial if the event is live.

  1. Set native resolution. Begin at the panel’s native resolution rather than using scaling as your first performance fix. Resolution changes affect sharpness and silhouette readability immediately.
  2. Choose a provisional cap. Pick a frame-rate limit your system normally reaches during a chase, not the number shown in a quiet lobby. If you cannot hold the cap, step down to the next practical target.
  3. Record more than average FPS. Note average FPS, 1% low FPS if your overlay provides it, and where you feel a hitch: loading into the trial, turning quickly, entering an event area, or during a chase.
  4. Repeat under comparable conditions. Use the same map where possible and avoid comparing a quiet early game with a late-game scene full of effects. The aim is a repeatable reference, not a laboratory benchmark.

No authoritative, cross-system percentage improvement exists for these settings. Treat every change as a local test on your machine, and keep the profile that improves frame-time consistency without making the game harder to read.

Best PC settings for smoother Haunted by Daylight matches

Start with a low or medium preset, then add quality selectively

Apply the game’s lowest or medium preset as a clean starting point. Presets can change several variables together, so inspect the individual options afterward. If the preset lowers resolution or introduces a scaling mode you do not want, restore native resolution before testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raise quality one setting at a time. Confirm the change in a real trial, especially an event match, before keeping it. A quiet menu cannot reveal the streaming and effect spikes that occur when several players, generators, hooks and event visuals occupy the same view.

Keep textures as high as VRAM can sustain

Texture quality usually affects memory use more than raw shader work. Keep textures at the highest level that does not produce texture-pop, sudden stalls or streaming hitches. If stutter appears when you turn toward a new section of the map, lower textures one step and retest. Reducing textures first is not automatically the best choice when your GPU has adequate VRAM; the correct level is the highest stable one for your system.

Lower shadows before lowering resolution

Shadows are expensive and can make dark scenes harder to parse when they flicker or update late. Use a low setting for a performance-first profile. If you prefer a balanced image, try medium only after confirming that your cap remains stable during a chase. Keep native resolution while making this change so survivor and killer silhouettes remain sharp.

Reduce effects, foliage and post-processing

Effects can spike when event interactions, attacks, particles and multiple players overlap. Lower effects before sacrificing resolution. Reduce foliage when dense vegetation causes frame-time spikes or obstructs silhouettes. Post-processing is another useful reduction point because it can add depth effects, bloom or other screen-wide work without improving your ability to react.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make one adjustment at a time and write down the result. If lowering effects removes a hitch but makes an event visual less noticeable, that is a normal trade-off; the goal is a readable, responsive trial, not identical visuals to a screenshot.

Use the least anti-aliasing that keeps outlines readable

Anti-aliasing can soften jagged edges but may blur thin geometry or distant silhouettes at higher levels. Start at the lowest option that keeps survivor and killer shapes readable on your display. If a low setting produces distracting shimmer, raise it one step rather than increasing several other quality options at the same time.

Disable motion blur when it interferes with tracking

If the graphics menu exposes motion blur and camera movement makes you lose track of a target, disable it. This is primarily a clarity and comfort choice. It may not deliver a dramatic FPS change, but removing a moving blur can make quick turns easier to interpret.

Leave the current graphics API and driver defaults alone

Use the platform’s current graphics API and your driver’s normal defaults unless a current Behaviour Interactive patch note or support article specifically recommends a change. Unofficial launch arguments and configuration edits can become invalid after an update and make troubleshooting harder. Establish a clean in-game profile before experimenting with advanced options.

Make dark Haunted by Daylight maps easier to see

Open Settings > Graphics and use the in-game Brightness control to calibrate gamma. Behaviour Interactive added a Video category to Graphics Settings and a Brightness control because the game relies heavily on the interplay of light and dark. The official 9.0.0 notes state that gamma calibration remains available at all times through Settings > Graphics.

A practical gamma calibration method

  1. Enter a trial or the game’s available visual test area with the display at its normal game preset.
  2. Raise Brightness/Gamma gradually until dark corners, hooks and nearby terrain are distinguishable.
  3. Stop before black areas become gray, fog loses contrast, or bright event effects become uncomfortable.
  4. Turn your camera through a shadowed area and a brightly lit area. The setting is useful only if both remain readable.
  5. Recheck after changing display mode, HDR, black-level or console picture settings; those changes alter the appearance of the same in-game value.

Extreme brightness is not automatically better. It can flatten the contrast that separates a survivor from the background and may cause eye strain during a long session. Gamma improves visibility within the game’s intended range; it does not reveal information that is outside the rendered scene.

Display controls on PC and console

On PC, keep the monitor’s normal game preset while calibrating so you do not compensate for an unusually bright or dark custom mode. On console, use the in-game Brightness/Gamma control first. You may also use the display’s game-mode or black-level control only when the display manufacturer documents what that control does. Avoid stacking an aggressive TV brightness boost on top of maximum in-game gamma.

Console players have fewer display controls than PC players. Do not expect PC-style launch options or config-file edits to reproduce a PC profile on a console. Use the settings exposed by the game and the console’s supported performance or quality mode.

Console settings for stable event matches

Leave resolution and quality at the console’s supported defaults unless the system offers a clearly labeled performance mode. A performance mode is generally the sensible choice when your priority is responsive camera movement and consistent frame time; select a quality mode only if it remains smooth in an actual Haunted by Daylight trial.

  1. Open the game’s Settings > Graphics menu.
  2. Set Brightness/Gamma using the dark-to-bright calibration method above.
  3. Select the platform’s performance-oriented mode if one is available and the label is clear.
  4. Close other applications or capture features that the console allows you to disable, then restart the game after a major update.
  5. Play one ordinary and one event trial before deciding whether the mode is stable.

Because console hardware and display paths are fixed, avoid expecting the same frame-rate options available on a PC. If the game does not expose a setting, do not attempt to force it through unsupported files or launch parameters.

Stop FPS drops and stutter after an update

Performance can change between builds. Behaviour Interactive’s 9.0.0 notes described launch optimization intended to reduce in-game stuttering, while the 10.1.2 release record dated September 8, 2026 shows that later live patches continue to alter behavior. The studio has also documented monitoring live performance and adjusting or reverting changes when necessary. A profile that was smooth last month may need to be retested after a patch.

Use a controlled recovery sequence

  1. Reset the graphics profile. Return to the game’s default or recommended graphics values, then reapply only native resolution and a conservative frame cap.
  2. Restart the game and platform. This clears a temporary session state and ensures the new profile is loaded from a clean launch.
  3. Verify the game files. Use the file-verification function provided by your PC platform. Corrupted or incomplete files can create behavior that a graphics tweak will not fix.
  4. Retest before adding overlays. Run the same ordinary and event trials used for your baseline with overlays, recording tools and browser windows closed.
  5. Change one variable. Lower shadows, effects, foliage or post-processing separately and record which change affects the hitch.
  6. Check the current patch notes. If stutter began immediately after an update, look for a documented issue before assuming your hardware failed.

Do not judge a change from a single turn in the lobby. A setting is useful when it remains stable across loading, traversal, a chase and event activity. If file verification and a clean profile do not help, restore your previous known-good settings and wait for an official fix rather than layering unsupported tweaks.

Match the symptom to the likely setting

  • Hitch when turning toward a new area: test a lower texture level to reduce streaming pressure.
  • Spikes during attacks or event effects: reduce effects and post-processing.
  • Slowdowns in dense vegetation: lower foliage.
  • Consistently low FPS everywhere: lower the preset or shadows, then reassess the cap; do not assume gamma is responsible.
  • Image looks blurry but frame time is stable: restore native resolution and use the lowest anti-aliasing level that preserves outlines.
  • Dark areas remain unreadable: recalibrate Brightness/Gamma and check the display’s game mode or black-level setting rather than raising every quality option.

Frame-rate caps, 1% lows and input feel

An uncapped counter can look impressive while frame time oscillates. Choose a cap below the highest rate your system reaches only briefly, leaving enough GPU and CPU headroom for event effects and streaming. For example, if a system moves between 100 and 140 FPS in ordinary play but repeatedly falls below 100 in a chase, a lower locked target may feel steadier than an uncapped 140 FPS peak. The correct cap is the one your hardware can hold in the demanding portions of a match.

Average FPS hides short stalls. A useful comparison records 1% lows and the location of visible hitches. If lowering shadows changes the average only slightly but raises the 1% low and removes a camera hitch, it is still a worthwhile competitive adjustment. Conversely, a higher average that introduces repeated spikes can make skill checks, camera turns and chase decisions feel less predictable.

Event rules that graphics settings cannot change

Haunted by Daylight changes scoring behavior through event rules, not through visual options. The event-specific score update explains that ordinary hook and generator score events may be lower while event interactions are more lucrative. It also notes that changing from ordinary to event-themed hooks or generators can affect score-event tracking.

Brightness, texture quality, shadows and FPS caps do not increase event score events or alter those rules. If your score appears different from an ordinary trial, check whether you performed an event interaction and whether the hook or generator was switched between ordinary and event-themed versions. Use graphics settings to improve control and visibility, not as a scoring exploit.

When to use each profile

Choose Competitive when consistency decides the match

Use Competitive if you notice hitching during chases, play at a high refresh rate, or prefer the clearest silhouettes over foliage and post-processing. Keep native resolution, lower the expensive detail settings, disable motion blur if needed, and cap below your unstable peak. Recheck gamma so reduced effects do not leave dark corners indistinct.

Choose Balanced when your system has headroom

Balanced suits a system that holds its cap in both ordinary and event trials. Keep textures high enough to avoid a muddy image, use medium detail where it does not cause spikes, and lower shadows or effects first if an event match becomes uneven. Balanced is not a promise that every map will hold the same rate; it is a staged profile that preserves quality while protecting frame time.

Choose Visual only after a stress test

Visual settings are appropriate when a complete event match remains smooth and you value atmosphere. Raise one quality option at a time, beginning with textures if VRAM allows, then test. If the cap breaks during a chase or event interaction, return to the last stable value instead of accepting intermittent stutter for a small visual gain.

A repeatable setup checklist

  • Native display resolution selected.
  • Frame-rate cap chosen from real-trial performance, not a menu peak.
  • Average FPS, 1% lows and hitch locations recorded for ordinary and event matches.
  • Low or medium preset used as the initial PC baseline.
  • Textures set to the highest level that does not stream with stalls.
  • Shadows, effects, foliage and post-processing reduced before resolution.
  • Anti-aliasing kept at the lowest level that preserves readable silhouettes.
  • Motion blur disabled when it harms tracking or comfort.
  • Brightness/Gamma calibrated under Settings > Graphics without washing out contrast.
  • Overlays and background capture tools closed during troubleshooting.
  • Graphics profile reset, files verified and the game restarted after unexplained post-patch stutter.
  • Event scoring evaluated separately from visual performance; graphics options do not change event rules.

What to expect after the next patch

Treat this profile as a starting point rather than a permanent formula. Behaviour Interactive continues to tune the live game, and the September 8, 2026 record for version 10.1.2 is a reminder that performance-sensitive behavior can change. After a substantial update, repeat the short baseline, check Brightness/Gamma, and confirm your cap in an event trial before raising quality settings again.
