SMITE 2 is the closest overall substitute for Deadlock because it combines third-person combat, hero abilities, team fights and explicit 5v5 MOBA strategy. Predecessor is the better choice for conventional third-person MOBA fundamentals, including lanes, roles, structures and map objectives.
Deadlock itself remains an early-development multiplayer game. Valve’s Steam listing describes access as limited to friend invites through playtesters, and no release date has been announced. That makes the choice less about finding an exact clone and more about deciding which part of Deadlock you want to practice now: shooter-like action, lane strategy, hero teamwork or objective control.

What makes Deadlock difficult to replace
Deadlock occupies an unusual middle ground. Its defining mix is a third-person shooter, hero abilities, team PvP, MOBA strategy and competitive objectives. Most games strongly emphasize one side of that formula. A hero shooter may reproduce the moment-to-moment aiming and ability use but omit lanes, structures and the wider economic decisions of a MOBA. A traditional MOBA may reproduce role selection, map pressure and objectives but feel very different because combat is not presented as a shooter.
That distinction matters when you choose an alternative. Someone waiting for an invite may say they want a “Deadlock-like” game but actually mean one of several different things:

No single available option reproduces every Deadlock trait. The recommendations below identify the strongest match for each priority rather than pretending the games are interchangeable.
SMITE 2: the closest overall genre substitute
Why it is the best first choice
SMITE 2’s official positioning is “The Third-Person Action MOBA,” and its site invites players to “Play Free Now.” Hi-Rez describes a combination of combat with the feel of a hero shooter and the deep strategy of a 5v5 MOBA. That makes it the clearest fit for a reader who wants both direct third-person action and a substantial MOBA decision layer.
The overlap with Deadlock is strongest at the level of structure and perspective: you control a hero from a third-person view, use an ability kit during team fights, and make decisions within a team-based competitive objective game. The match is not merely an arena shooter with character abilities; its identity is explicitly built around action-MOBA strategy.

- Third-person control: The camera and movement perspective are closer to Deadlock than a top-down or isometric MOBA.
- Hero-centered combat: Your chosen character’s abilities shape how you approach fights and objectives.
- Team strategy: Winning depends on more than individual eliminations; the game is framed around 5v5 MOBA decisions.
- Shooter-like feel: Hi-Rez specifically uses hero-shooter-style combat as part of its description, which addresses the action-focused side of Deadlock’s appeal.
What does not carry over
SMITE 2 uses mythological gods rather than Deadlock’s urban-fantasy cast. Its presentation and action-MOBA structure therefore provide a different setting and flavor, even when the camera, abilities and team strategy feel familiar. It should be treated as the best match for the hybrid formula, not as a one-for-one recreation of Deadlock’s characters, world or exact combat systems.

Access and platform considerations
The official site states that SMITE 2 supports keyboard and mouse, controller, Steam Deck, cross-play and cross-progression. Those options make it practical for players who want to switch between supported devices or play with friends on other platforms. The site’s “Play Free Now” wording also directly addresses the main problem facing a player who cannot yet enter Deadlock’s invite-limited test.
Choose SMITE 2 first if your test is simple: “Does this feel like a third-person action game while still asking me to think like a MOBA player?” Among the available choices, it is the most direct answer.
Predecessor: the best choice for lanes, roles and MOBA fundamentals
Why it fits a different kind of Deadlock player
Predecessor is a true third-person MOBA built around heroes, lanes, roles, structures, monsters and objectives. Omeda lists carry, jungle, midlane, offlane and support as its role framework. The game is available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox, with full cross-play.

It offers the third-person perspective and hero-based control without asking you to settle for a purely shooter-oriented substitute.

What carries over from Deadlock
- Third-person movement: The perspective keeps the action immediate and character-controlled.
- Hero kits: Different heroes support different jobs within a coordinated team.
- Lane-based pressure: The lane structure gives you a clear framework for advancing, defending and creating openings.
- Role coordination: Carry, jungle, midlane, offlane and support create defined responsibilities that must fit together.
- Objectives and structures: Progress is tied to the map and its objectives, not only to winning isolated fights.
Where it differs from Deadlock
Predecessor is less centered on gunplay than Deadlock. Its emphasis is the conventional lane-MOBA framework, so a player seeking the most shooter-forward interpretation of the hybrid may prefer SMITE 2. The difference is useful rather than a flaw: Predecessor is the better training ground for understanding lanes, roles, map movement and objective timing.
Access and cross-play
Omeda’s site says Predecessor is available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox and supports full cross-play. That gives it a straightforward advantage for groups that need broad platform coverage. If your priority is to learn the habits of a third-person lane MOBA while waiting for Deadlock access, it is the most focused option.
SMITE 2 or Predecessor? Use your priority to decide
| What you value most | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The closest blend of shooter-like combat and MOBA strategy | SMITE 2 | It is explicitly presented as a third-person action MOBA with hero-shooter-feeling combat and 5v5 strategy. |
| Lane pressure, roles and map objectives | Predecessor | Its structure centers on lanes, carry, jungle, midlane, offlane, support, structures, monsters and objectives. |
| Playing across keyboard and mouse, controller or Steam Deck | SMITE 2 | The official site lists keyboard and mouse, controller and Steam Deck support. |
| Playing with friends across PC, PlayStation and Xbox | Predecessor | Omeda says it is available on those platforms with full cross-play. |
| Immediate access without a Deadlock playtest invite | Either | Both are presented by their official sites as available games, while Deadlock access remains invite-limited. |
The table is a decision aid, not a claim that the games are equally similar in every respect. SMITE 2 is the stronger hybrid substitute; Predecessor is the stronger lane-MOBA substitute.
Other alternatives when shooting matters more than MOBA structure
Overwatch
Current comparison coverage commonly names Overwatch as an alternative for players who mainly want hero abilities, team fights and shooter-first action. It belongs in the “hero-shooter substitute” category rather than the direct Deadlock category. The important trade-off is that matching the shooting and character abilities does not automatically reproduce the lane, item, map and objective decisions that define a MOBA.

Paladins
Paladins is another name raised in comparison coverage for readers prioritizing character-based shooting and team combat. As with Overwatch, it is best considered when the shooter side of Deadlock is the attraction. It should not be presented as a third-person MOBA replacement without checking the specific mode and current availability you intend to play.
How to use shooter alternatives intelligently
Choose a shooter-first option only if your main goal is to practice rapid aiming, ability timing, positioning and coordinated team fights. If you also want to learn lane pressure, role responsibilities or objective trading, start with SMITE 2 or Predecessor instead. Live-service modes and platform support change, so verify the current official listing before committing to a particular version or queue.

Step 1: Identify the part of Deadlock you are waiting for
Write down the one feature you would miss most if it disappeared. If the answer is “third-person shooting with abilities,” SMITE 2 is the logical first test. If it is “lanes, roles and objectives,” begin with Predecessor. If it is simply “team-based hero shooting,” investigate a shooter-first alternative.

Step 2: Match your group’s hardware
For a mixed-device group, check the platform information before installing. SMITE 2’s official information includes keyboard and mouse, controller, Steam Deck, cross-play and cross-progression. Predecessor’s official information covers PC, PlayStation and Xbox with full cross-play. Select the game that fits the devices your group actually uses.

Step 3: Play for the right skill, not for a perfect clone
Use SMITE 2 to practice switching between direct combat and MOBA-level decisions. Use Predecessor to practice reading lanes, taking a role, moving through terrain and coordinating around structures and objectives. A shooter-first game can sharpen aim and ability timing, but it will not teach the same strategic layer.
Step 4: Reassess after several matches
Do not judge the alternatives only by whether their characters, setting or visual style resemble Deadlock. Ask whether the match is developing the habits you want: deciding when to fight, when to rotate, when to protect an objective and how to contribute from your role. That is the useful part of the comparison.
What you should not expect from any substitute
- An identical cast or setting: SMITE 2 uses mythological gods, while Deadlock has an urban-fantasy identity.
- The exact same combat balance: Similar camera perspective and abilities do not guarantee similar weapon handling, movement or hero tuning.
- The same strategic map: Predecessor’s lanes, structures and objectives are its own framework, not a copy of Deadlock’s.
- A guaranteed permanent feature set: All of these games can change through live-service updates, mode rotations and platform decisions.
- A replacement for access itself: An alternative can give you comparable skills or structure, but it cannot provide entry to Deadlock’s private playtest.
Deadlock access and freshness caveats
Valve currently labels Deadlock as an early-development multiplayer game with access limited to friend invites through playtesters. Its release date remains to be announced. Those facts can change, as can the available modes, supported platforms and access rules for every live-service title discussed here.
