The Alienware Aurora R13 was the strongest all-around gaming option, the Dell XPS 8950 was the best understated choice, and the Dell G5 5000 made sense only as a discounted 1080p machine. None was ideal for buyers who prioritized quiet cooling, standard components, or easy upgrades.
This is a historical 2022 buying guide with advice for people considering these systems used in 2026. Dell now lists the Aurora R13 as unavailable, so these are not current new-product recommendations.

What Dell sold in 2022
Alienware Aurora R13
The Aurora R13 was Dell’s premium gaming desktop for the 2022 Intel generation. It paired 12th-generation Intel Core processors with graphics options ranging from entry-level RTX cards to high-end RTX 30-series GPUs. Dell’s official specifications document the available configurations.
#1 Best Overall
- Processor: Intel Core i5-7500 7th Gen – 3.4GHz Base Speed, Up to 3.8GHz Turbo Boost for Reliable Gaming Performance
- Memory: 16GB DDR4 RAM – Smooth Multitasking and Faster Load Times
- Storage: 256GB SSD – Quick Boot Speeds and Responsive Storage
- GPU: GeForce GT 1030 Graphics 2GB GDDR5 – Enhanced Visuals for Casual and Entry-Level Gaming
- Accesories: Keyboard & Mouse
It was the best Dell choice for buyers who wanted a recognizable gaming design, RGB lighting, warranty support and a ready-to-use system. Tom’s Hardware reported a review-context starting configuration near $1,199 with a Core i5-12400F, RTX 3050, 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, although Dell’s pricing changed frequently.
The problem was value at the top end. Reviews from TechRadar and Tom’s Hardware raised concerns about cooling under demanding CPU and GPU configurations. The proprietary-looking motherboard, power supply and chassis also made future repairs or major upgrades less straightforward than with a standard ATX desktop. PC Gamer discussed the resulting motherboard-replacement and upgrade concerns.
Buy: a GPU-focused configuration with 16GB dual-channel memory, at least a 512GB SSD, and a meaningful sale discount. Liquid cooling was preferable for higher-end configurations, but it did not eliminate the system’s proprietary design compromises.
Avoid: paying heavily for a Core i9, 32GB of RAM or premium storage while accepting an entry-level GPU. That money generally helped gaming less than a stronger graphics card.
Dell XPS 8950
The XPS 8950 looked like an office tower but could be a serious gaming desktop. It used 12th-generation Intel processors and was available with graphics options extending from mainstream cards to RTX 3090-class configurations. Its restrained design made it a better fit for a shared room, office or school setup.

- GRAPHICS DETAILS: The GeForce GT 1030 2GB lets you take on the games such as CS GO, DOTA 2, GTA V, and many more, with decent FPS at medium settings. You will get the smoothest experience possible, from the moment you start playing. This is the ultimate gaming display and the go-to equipment for enthusiast gamers.
Tom’s Guide tested a Core i5-12600K, RTX 3060 Ti, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD and 2TB hard drive configuration at $1,647 at the time of publication. The review found generally strong 1080p gaming results, including performance around the desired 60-fps range in its tested games. See the full XPS 8950 review for the tested configuration and results.
Choose the XPS 8950 when you want gaming performance without Alienware styling, or when the equivalent configuration costs less than an Aurora. Its compact internal layout can become crowded and loud with powerful components, and Dell’s factory RAM and storage upgrades were often poor value. Digital Trends’ review also provides useful context on its design and upgrade trade-offs.

The G5 5000 was Dell’s budget-oriented gaming tower. Dell documentation lists configurations using GPUs including the GTX 1650 Super, GTX 1660 variants, RTX 2060, RTX 2060 Super, RTX 2070 Super and Radeon RX 5600 XT, depending on configuration and market. The official specifications and service manual show its compact design and supported storage components.
It was suitable primarily for 1080p gaming. A configuration with 16GB of dual-channel RAM and an RTX 2060- or RTX 3060-class GPU could be sensible when heavily discounted. The small case, limited airflow, modest PSU choices and restricted upgrade path made it a poor foundation for a future high-end graphics card.
Buy: when the price is clearly below better-cooled standard-part prebuilts and the system already has adequate RAM and storage.

Which specifications mattered most?
Graphics card
The GPU should drive the buying decision:
- 1080p esports and older games: GTX 1650 Super, GTX 1660 Super or RTX 2060.
- 1080p high refresh: RTX 3060 or RTX 3060 Ti.
- 1440p: RTX 3070, RTX 3070 Ti or RTX 3080.
- Demanding 4K: RTX 3080, RTX 3080 Ti or RTX 3090, with realistic expectations for ray tracing.
“RTX” alone does not identify a performance tier. An RTX 3050, RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3080 are not interchangeable recommendations.
CPU, RAM and storage
A 12th-generation Core i5 or i7 was generally the sensible gaming choice. A Core i9 made more sense for sustained rendering, encoding or other CPU-heavy work than for ordinary gaming. Spend on the GPU first.
16GB dual-channel RAM was the practical minimum in 2022. Treat 8GB as an immediate upgrade requirement. Choose 32GB for streaming, heavy multitasking, content creation or heavily modded games. Confirm whether the machine has one memory module or two.
A 512GB SSD was usable but easy to fill. A 1TB SSD was more comfortable, while a hard drive remained useful for bulk storage. Compare Dell’s upgrade prices with retail SSD and memory prices before ordering.

Aurora R13 versus XPS 8950 versus G5 5000
- For 1080p: the G5 5000 can be the value pick, but only with a suitable GPU and discount.
- For 1440p: prefer an XPS 8950 or Aurora R13 with an RTX 3060 Ti or stronger.
- For 4K: look at higher-end Aurora or XPS configurations, but scrutinize cooling and price.
- For quiet or sustained workloads: be cautious with compact Dell and Alienware configurations; review-specific thermal and noise results do not apply identically to every build.
- For appearance: choose Alienware for gaming styling or XPS for a discreet desktop.
- For upgrades: neither is ideal compared with a standard-part custom or boutique build.
Are Alienware desktops worth the premium?
Sometimes. Alienware’s premium bought convenience, distinctive design, support options and a complete out-of-box system. During the 2022 GPU shortage, a discounted prebuilt could also be financially rational because buying a graphics card separately was unusually difficult or expensive.
The premium was harder to justify when the Aurora included a top-tier CPU, expensive factory memory or storage, and a high-end GPU in a thermally constrained chassis. Buyers who value standard parts, quiet operation, easy repairs and long-term upgradeability should usually choose a better-cooled standard-part prebuilt or build their own PC.
There is no universal sale-price cutoff. Compare the exact system with the approximate retail cost of its CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, case, PSU, Windows license and warranty. The comparison must include any upgrades the cheapest configuration needs immediately.
Configurations to avoid
- 8GB RAM, especially in a single-channel arrangement.
- A 256GB SSD as the only storage drive.
- A high-end Core i7 or i9 paired with an entry-level GPU.
- Premium factory RAM or SSD upgrades that cost substantially more than retail parts.
- A high-end CPU without an adequate cooler for sustained workloads.
- A used system with an unknown PSU, missing proprietary cables, modified cooling or evidence of thermal throttling.
- Any model priced close to a newer, standard-part prebuilt with better airflow and upgrade options.
Buying a used Dell gaming desktop in 2026
Do not judge a used Aurora R13, XPS 8950 or G5 5000 by its original MSRP. Compare it with current systems and verify:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The exact CPU and GPU, not just the model family.
- PSU wattage, connectors and whether the unit can support the installed GPU.
- Cooler type, fan operation and temperatures during a sustained gaming test.
- RAM capacity and whether it is running in dual channel.
- SSD health and remaining capacity.
- Included side panels, cables and original cooling hardware.
- Warranty status and whether coverage transfers in your region.
- Any BIOS, cooling or component modifications made by the seller.
Dell’s current Aurora R13 page identifies the model as unavailable, so a used listing should be treated as an older, discontinued system rather than a current Dell purchase.
Final verdict
In 2022, Dell gaming desktops were reasonable purchases—but only when the GPU, cooling and sale price lined up. Choose the Aurora R13 for design, support and strong gaming performance; the XPS 8950 for discreet gaming plus productivity; and the G5 5000 only for discounted 1080p gaming. In 2026, buy any of them used only when the price reflects their age and the exact configuration passes a careful hardware inspection.
