Best Dell OptiPlex for Gaming: Which Tower Is Worth Upgrading?

The OptiPlex 7010 Plus Tower is the strongest modern upgrade base, while a 7090 Tower is a practical refurbished target. Chassis, PSU, GPU fit, and total cost matter more than the model number.

For most gaming upgrades, look for a Dell OptiPlex tower—not just a particular model number. The OptiPlex 7010 Plus Tower is the strongest modern platform if you can find it at a sensible price with its optional 500 W power supply. For a refurbished value build, target a 7090 Tower with the 500 W PSU. Choose a 7090 SFF only if a compact case is essential and you have confirmed that a compatible low-profile graphics card fits. Micro and USFF models are poor choices for a conventional GPU upgrade.

An OptiPlex is a business desktop, not automatically a gaming PC. Its usefulness depends on the exact chassis, power supply, processor, graphics card, memory, storage, cooling, and total cost after upgrades.

Which Dell OptiPlex is best for gaming?

The best choice depends on whether you are buying new, shopping refurbished, or upgrading a computer you already own. The ranking below is about the platform’s potential, not a guarantee that every configuration is gaming-ready.

Rank Model and chassis Best use What to verify
1 OptiPlex 7010 Plus Tower Best modern conversion Seek the 500 W PSU; it is an option, not standard on every unit.
2 OptiPlex 7090 Tower Best refurbished/value target Confirm the exact PSU; Dell documented 260 W, 300 W, 360 W, and 500 W versions.
3 OptiPlex 7080 Tower Used alternative Consider it when materially cheaper than a comparable 7090.
4 OptiPlex 7010 Mini Tower Very low-cost full-height-card build Its older platform and 275 W PSU limit sensible GPU choices.
5 OptiPlex 7090 SFF Compact gaming build Requires a compatible low-profile GPU; check card dimensions and power.
6 OptiPlex 7080 SFF Older compact option Buy only if the price and exact card compatibility make sense.
7 Micro or USFF Light or older games without a normal GPU upgrade These are not practical bases for a conventional internal gaming GPU.

The tower chassis is the safer default: it offers more room, cooling options, and choice of full-height graphics cards. The four-digit model number alone does not tell you whether the machine can accept the GPU you want.

Best overall: OptiPlex 7010 Plus Tower

The 7010 Plus Tower is the strongest platform here for a serious conversion. Dell documents 13th-generation Intel processor options, DDR5 memory configurations up to 128 GB, and a full-height PCIe Gen 4 x16 slot. Dell’s processor support list ranges from Core i3-13100 through Core i9-13900K-family options; a Core i5 configuration is a sensible starting point for a balanced gaming build. A newer i5 can be a better foundation than an older i7, so compare generation and exact processor rather than relying on the badge.

Power is the key qualification. Dell lists both a 260 W 80 Plus Bronze PSU and a 500 W 80 Plus Platinum PSU. For a graphics-card upgrade, the 500 W version is the more attractive starting point, but you still need to confirm the actual unit’s connectors and the GPU’s power requirements. Dell has offered configurations with Radeon RX 6300, RX 6500, GeForce RTX 3050, and RTX 3070 graphics; these are configuration options, not a promise that any used 7010 Plus contains them or that every aftermarket card will fit.

Check Dell’s processor support documentation, power ratings, and product specifications against the exact configuration being sold.

When the 7010 Plus is not a good deal

Price can erase the value of this platform. Dell’s US listings showed the product unavailable in one listing and a configured price of $1,278.35 in another during the August 2026 commercial snapshot. That is not a recommended gaming price: a new business desktop at that level is hard to justify as an upgrade base unless it includes a suitable discrete GPU, warranty, or unusually favorable configuration. Availability and pricing change; compare the finished system cost rather than treating a listing price as a benchmark.

Dell’s listings: unavailable listing and configured listing.

Best refurbished target: OptiPlex 7090 Tower

The 7090 Tower is a strong used-market target: its full-size case is more accommodating than SFF, and its platform is newer than the older 7010, 7020, and 9020 generations. Dell documents 260 W, 300 W, 360 W, and 500 W PSU configurations. For a conventional gaming GPU conversion, seek the 500 W version and verify the label on the particular machine. A listing that says only “OptiPlex 7090” does not establish its chassis or PSU.

Look for a Core i5 or better, 16 GB of RAM, and SSD storage, while treating those as starting conditions rather than proof of gaming performance. If the system has a smaller PSU, budget for a compatible replacement only after checking Dell’s wiring and case constraints. A replacement may require a model-specific adapter; do not assume a standard ATX supply is a drop-in swap.

Sources: Dell’s 7090 Tower power ratings and Dell Refurbished tower inventory. Refurbished stock and individual configurations vary; inspect the listing for its warranty, return policy, GPU, storage, and exact chassis.

Cheapest full-size option: OptiPlex 7010 Mini Tower

The original 7010 Mini Tower can be a reasonable ultra-budget base only when it is very cheap. Dell’s specification sheet distinguishes it from the Desktop, SFF, and USFF versions: the Mini Tower has a full-height PCIe x16 slot and a 275 W PSU option, while the SFF uses half-height slots and a 240 W PSU, and the USFF uses a 200 W PSU. The Mini Tower’s DDR3-era platform is substantially older than the 7090 or 7010 Plus, so pair it with a modest, power-efficient GPU and compare the completed cost with a newer refurbished tower.

Do not buy one simply because a listing advertises an i7. An older i7 does not make the machine equivalent to a newer platform, and the stock PSU is not automatically suitable for a higher-power card. See Dell’s OptiPlex 7010 specification sheet to distinguish chassis variants.

Compact choice: OptiPlex 7090 SFF

The 7090 SFF is a better compact starting point than an older SFF model, but it should be chosen only when size matters more than upgrade flexibility. Dell describes the 7090 SFF as the successor to the 7080 SFF in its support documentation.

An SFF upgrade needs a low-profile card, and “low-profile” only describes card height. Length, thickness, cooler design, slot clearance, power draw, and connector needs must also match the exact machine. Restricted airflow can make a card that physically fits run hotter or louder. Favor a compatible low-profile GPU that does not need an external power connector, but verify the exact card and system specifications rather than assuming all 7090 SFF units are identical.

Why tower versus SFF matters more than the model number

Tower

  • Accepts a wider range of full-height graphics cards, subject to length, thickness, and power limits.
  • Provides more internal clearance and generally makes installation and maintenance easier.
  • Offers more room for airflow and a broader range of PSU configurations.

SFF

  • Restricts the choice to cards that meet low-profile and dimensional requirements.
  • May have limited PSU capacity or lack the PCIe power connector a chosen GPU requires.
  • Can be harder to cool under sustained gaming loads.

Micro and USFF models generally lack the space and full-size PCIe expansion needed for a normal internal gaming GPU. External GPU arrangements may be possible in unusual setups, but they are not a sensible budget recommendation for these machines.

Choose a GPU by chassis, PSU, and total cost

There is no single best graphics card for every OptiPlex. Start with the computer’s actual PSU and the card’s requirements, then confirm physical fit. Dell offered discrete graphics up to RTX 3070 in specified 7010 Plus Tower configurations, but an aftermarket or used GPU may have different dimensions, power draw, and connectors.

  • For a tower with a suitable PSU: Consider an efficient entry-level card for 1080p or a more capable card only when the PSU, connectors, case clearance, and cooling are adequate. Used previous-generation cards can make sense when they keep the whole build inexpensive.
  • For an SFF system: Restrict the shortlist to verified low-profile cards that fit the card’s height, length, thickness, power, and connector limits.
  • For a low-wattage stock supply: Do not infer suitability from physical fit or a card’s advertised average draw. Account for GPU load, CPU load, transient demand, PSU age, and connector availability.
  • For any PSU replacement: Check whether the Dell motherboard connection is proprietary and whether a model-specific adapter is required. Verify the correct pinout; a generic adapter should not be assumed safe.

Before buying, add the computer, GPU, RAM, SSD, any adapter or replacement PSU, cooling needs, and shipping. If that total approaches the cost of a newer gaming PC that already has a discrete GPU, buy the more complete system instead.

Memory, storage, and cooling to check

Memory

For a new budget gaming conversion, treat 16 GB as a practical minimum; 32 GB is reasonable for heavy multitasking, modded games, content creation, or a longer ownership period. Prefer a dual-channel arrangement where supported, and check the number of installed sticks rather than capacity alone. A single memory module can reduce performance in some workloads, particularly when relying on integrated graphics. More RAM will not fix a GPU bottleneck. The 7010 Plus supports DDR5 and Dell lists configurations up to 128 GB, but the installed configuration varies.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

Storage

An SSD is strongly preferable to a hard disk for responsiveness and loading. Confirm whether the included drive is SATA or NVMe, its capacity and health, whether another drive can be installed, and whether the system includes a licensed operating system. Refurbished listings may differ; do not assume Windows activation or a particular storage setup from the model name.

Cooling and condition

Business desktops are not necessarily designed for sustained gaming loads. Inspect dust, fan operation, GPU intake clearance, and room for front-to-back airflow. A card that fits may still run hot or loud in a restricted case. On a used system, check for thermal throttling under load if you can test it.

What gaming performance to expect

With a suitable discrete GPU, a properly configured tower is best treated as a value-oriented 1080p system. Actual performance depends on the exact processor, graphics card, game, settings, and cooling; no model name alone predicts frame rates.

  • Esports: A suitable GPU can make these games a sensible target, with settings adjusted to the desired responsiveness.
  • Older AAA games: Many are plausible at 1080p with higher settings, depending on the GPU.
  • Modern demanding games: Expect to reduce settings and potentially use upscaling where supported; demanding titles can expose limits in both GPU and platform.
  • Ray tracing: Treat it as hardware- and game-dependent, not a default expectation for a budget OptiPlex build.
  • 1440p, 4K, or high-refresh AAA: These are poor general targets for this class of converted office desktop unless the specific GPU and total build justify them.

The 7010 Plus’s integrated Intel UHD Graphics 730/770 options are not substitutes for its listed discrete GPUs in demanding 3D games. Dell documents processor and graphics configurations here.

Buying checklist: verify the exact machine

  1. Identify the chassis. Confirm Tower, Mini Tower, SFF, Micro, or USFF. Ask for clear front, rear, side-panel, and internal photos if the listing is vague.
  2. Confirm the processor. Get the exact CPU model; do not compare systems by “i5” or “i7” alone.
  3. Check memory. Verify capacity, number of modules, and whether the configuration supports dual-channel operation.
  4. Check storage and OS. Confirm SSD versus HDD, capacity, drive health, and operating-system licensing.
  5. Read the PSU label. Confirm wattage and efficiency, and inspect the actual PCIe power connectors rather than relying on a seller’s model-level description.
  6. Measure the GPU space. Compare card height, length, and thickness with the exact chassis and neighboring components.
  7. Match power requirements. Check the GPU maker’s recommended PSU and connector requirements against the actual PSU and system configuration.
  8. Inspect condition and airflow. Look for dust, working fans, clear intake paths, and signs of overheating.
  9. Calculate the finished cost. Include GPU, upgrades, adapters, shipping, and any replacement PSU before deciding it is a bargain.
  10. Review warranty and return terms. Refurbished grading and coverage depend on the seller and listing; verify what applies to the unit.

For inventory, Dell Refurbished lists tower desktops and a 7090 search page. Inventory can include Tower and SFF machines, so check the individual configuration before purchase.

Which OptiPlex models should you avoid?

  • Micro and USFF: Avoid these for a conventional internal GPU gaming build; their size and expansion limitations defeat the main upgrade path.
  • SFF when you want broad GPU choice: Choose it only if compactness is a hard requirement and you have verified a specific low-profile card.
  • Very old or low-end configurations at near-new prices: An older i7 label does not justify paying close to the cost of a more capable refurbished system.
  • Integrated-graphics systems advertised as gaming PCs: Confirm the actual graphics card; a gaming label does not establish that a discrete GPU is installed.
  • Listings with undisclosed chassis or PSU: If the seller will not show the case and PSU details, you cannot reliably plan a GPU upgrade.
  • Systems with a hard disk and no upgrade allowance: Include the cost of an SSD and any other missing essentials before comparing prices.
