For most YouTube streamers, OBS Studio is the better place to start: it is free, open source and available for Windows, macOS and Linux. XSplit Broadcaster is a reasonable choice for Windows users who prefer its commercial workflow or want built-in multistreaming with a Premium license. Both can be used as encoder software for YouTube; the deciding factors are platform, workflow, cost and whether you need XSplit’s paid features—not a proven performance advantage.

OBS Studio vs XSplit Broadcaster at a glance

The comparison below reflects the products’ published features and platform requirements, not a controlled performance test. YouTube lists both OBS and XSplit as encoder software options, but individual configurations and features still need to be checked against your setup.

What matters OBS Studio XSplit Broadcaster
Operating system Windows 10/11, macOS 13.0 or newer, and Linux distribution options are listed on the OBS download page. The cited Broadcaster requirements list Windows 10 64-bit; no macOS or Linux support is established by that page.
Cost and free use Described by its publisher as free and open source. Free tier plus paid plans. The official comparison currently lists $0 Free, $14.99/month, $59.99/year and $119.99 lifetime; prices and feature gates can change or vary by region.
Free-tier output limits No paid tier is required for the software described by the publisher. The official comparison lists free output up to 720p without a watermark and watermarking above 720p; the free tier also lists a four-scene limit.
Production controls Scenes, sources, custom transitions, audio filters, hotkeys, Studio Mode, Multiview, plugins and scripts are listed features. Drag-and-drop source composition, recording and OBS scene import are listed features; Premium lists unlimited scenes.
Built-in simultaneous output No comparable integrated multi-service feature is established in the cited official feature information. XSplit says a Premium license enables simultaneous streaming to multiple services without a third-party service.

Choose OBS Studio if you want free software and flexibility

OBS is the stronger default for a YouTube gaming stream if you want to avoid a software subscription, use macOS or Linux, or build a highly customized production. Its official feature list includes window capture, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards, alongside audio filters, hotkeys, transitions, Studio Mode, Multiview, plugins and scripts.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That flexibility can mean more choices to configure. It does not automatically make OBS easier for every beginner, and the available evidence does not establish that it uses fewer resources or performs better than XSplit on the same computer. OBS advises testing settings before a real stream; use a local recording or a private/unlisted stream to check your own scenes, audio and game performance.

Choose XSplit if its Windows workflow or Premium features fit

XSplit Broadcaster may suit a Windows user who prefers its interface and wants features such as integrated simultaneous output to multiple services. XSplit describes drag-and-drop source composition, recording and OBS scene import. Its free tier is worth trying if its output and scene restrictions fit your needs, but the official comparison lists watermarking above 720p and a four-scene cap. Premium removes the listed scene limit and enables simultaneous broadcasting, among other plan-gated features.

XSplit’s published minimum requirements are Windows 10 64-bit, a second-generation Core i5 or equivalent, 8 GB RAM, and DirectX 10.1-or-better GeForce- or Radeon-class graphics. It recommends a second-generation Core i7 or equivalent and a 5 Mbps upload connection for HD stream quality. These are XSplit’s own requirements and guidance, not evidence that it will run better or worse than OBS on equivalent hardware.

How to make the decision for a YouTube gaming stream

  • Start with OBS if you use macOS or Linux, want free/open-source software, or value extensive scene and extension controls.
  • Consider XSplit if you use Windows and its commercial workflow appeals to you, or you specifically need its Premium built-in multi-service output.
  • Try before committing. OBS is free; XSplit’s free tier lets you check its workflow, provided its scene and output restrictions suit the test.
  • Test your actual setup. Record locally or run a private/unlisted stream with the game, scene layout, audio and target frame rate you intend to use. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can tax a system more than 30 fps; this is general setup guidance, not an OBS-versus-XSplit benchmark.

For current platform and feature details, see the OBS download page and XSplit Broadcaster page. YouTube explains encoder streaming and lists both applications in its encoder guidance.
