For a 2026 Don’t Starve Together server, start with Combined Status, Global Positions, Minimap HUD, Geometric Placement, ActionQueue Reborn, Uncompromising Mode, and Extra Equipment Slots. Add only the mods that fit your group, and test them together before opening a long-term world. The installation has two separate parts: downloading mods in dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua, then enabling and configuring them with modoverrides.lua in every shard folder.
The best server mods at a glance
There is no independently verified universal ranking of Don’t Starve Together mods. The 2026 recommendations below are the practical shortlist identified by current roundups from Switchblade Gaming and Game Rant. Treat them as starting points, not a guarantee that every mod is maintained or compatible with every other mod.

The first seven mods form the current, commonly cited shortlist. Wormhole Marks belongs in a “verify before use” category: open its Workshop page, check the update date and recent comments, and test it on a disposable world before adding it to a persistent cluster.
Choose a mod set that matches your group
A low-friction quality-of-life set
For a new or mixed-experience group, begin with Combined Status, Global Positions, Minimap HUD, and Geometric Placement. These choices address information, navigation, teamwork, and building without deliberately increasing the survival rules’ severity. Add one mod at a time so that a problem can be traced to a specific change.

A convenience-focused set
ActionQueue Reborn and Extra Equipment Slots are appropriate when the group wants to spend less time on repetitive input and inventory juggling. Establish the policy before play: some players view these features as harmless interface improvements, while others regard them as a meaningful reduction in survival pressure.
A veteran challenge set
Uncompromising Mode is aimed at experienced players. Create a separate world or cluster for it rather than silently changing the rules of a long-running save. If you combine it with convenience mods, decide which part of the experience you are trying to preserve—the harsher world rules, the reduced friction, or both.
A cautious experimental set
Wormhole Marks should be treated as an experiment, not a default recommendation, because the reported maintenance gap is unusually long. Use a fresh backup, keep the player count small, and remove it immediately if clients disconnect or the server crashes.

How server mods are installed in DST
Dedicated servers use two different Lua files, and confusing their jobs is the most common setup mistake.

A cluster that runs both the Forest (Master) and Caves shards needs a modoverrides.lua in both folders. A mod intended to affect the whole cluster must be enabled in both files. A server-side download entry alone is never enough.
Install the recommended mods step by step
1. Decide the scope before editing files
Write down which mods are required for the server and which are optional conveniences. This prevents a player from joining with a different ruleset and gives you a clean rollback plan. Keep a copy of the current mods folder and both shard configuration files before making changes.

2. Subscribe every player to the Workshop items
Players must subscribe to the same Workshop mods on their own Steam accounts. The dedicated server does not push mod files to clients automatically. Send the exact Workshop links or IDs to everyone, and ask each player to finish the download before joining.

Open dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua in the server installation’s mods folder. Add one ServerModSetup line per Workshop item. The ID is a string; this is the documented form:
ServerModSetup("350811795")Use the numeric ID from each mod’s Workshop URL. Do not put the display name in the function call. If you maintain a Workshop collection, the ServerModCollectionSetup function can pull the collection by its collection ID instead of listing every item individually; verify the collection contents before relying on it for a production server.
4. Boot once and confirm the download
Start the server and watch its console or log output for Workshop download activity. Stop the server after the boot completes, then check that the expected mod folders exist under the server’s mods directory. If nothing was downloaded, fix the setup file before touching shard configuration; an enablement file cannot activate content the server never obtained.
5. Create or edit modoverrides.lua in every shard
In each shard folder, add an entry using the Workshop ID with the required workshop- prefix:

}The prefix is mandatory. A key written without workshop- will not refer to the downloaded Workshop mod. If the file already contains entries, merge them into the same Lua table rather than creating a second return block.

6. Copy known-good options instead of guessing keys
Mod options are not universal. The option names must exactly match the keys defined by that mod; a misspelled key is ignored and the mod silently uses its default. The safest shortcut is to enable and configure the mod in the DST client, then copy the generated modoverrides.lua block into the server’s shard file. Repeat the process for every mod that exposes settings.
7. Duplicate cluster-wide entries in Master/ and Caves/
If the world uses both shards, copy the relevant enabled entries into both Master/modoverrides.lua and Caves/modoverrides.lua. Leaving an entry in only one shard creates confusing symptoms: a feature appears in one world layer and disappears when players move to the other.
8. Restart and test with the actual player roster
Perform a full server restart after changing either file. Have at least two players join, travel between shards if applicable, open their maps, and perform the actions affected by the new mods. Test on a temporary world first, especially for Uncompromising Mode or any mod with a long maintenance gap.

Use the exact key and prefix
An enabled entry must use the form ["workshop-ID"] = { enabled = true }, where ID is the item’s numeric Workshop ID. The workshop- text is part of the key, not decoration.
Keep commas between entries
Lua tables require commas between neighboring entries. A missing comma between two mods, or a stray trailing comma in a context that your parser rejects, can prevent the entire table from loading. When adding a new block, compare its punctuation with the block generated by the game client rather than retyping a large file.
Match option names exactly
Configuration keys are mod-specific and case-sensitive in practice. If a setting has no effect, compare the spelling and nesting with the mod’s generated client configuration. Do not assume that a key used by one mod exists in another.

Keep one authoritative file per shard
Do not maintain separate “temporary” and “live” copies in the same shard directory. Decide which file is active, edit it, and retain backups outside the server’s loaded configuration path. This avoids troubleshooting a file that the server never reads.
Client requirements and multiplayer behavior
Every player needs the Workshop subscriptions
The server downloads its own copies, but clients still need to subscribe through Steam. A player who has not subscribed may be unable to load the world or may join without the feature, depending on the mod. Make subscriptions part of your server’s onboarding checklist.
Global Positions is an all-client requirement
Global Positions must run on every client. If one player lacks it, the persistent teammate icons do nothing for that player. This is different from assuming that enabling a mod on the server automatically supplies its interface to everyone.
Check each mod’s current Workshop notes
Client/server behavior varies by mod, and the available roundups do not establish a verified current update date for every item. Read the Workshop description and recent comments for the exact version, required subscriptions, and known conflicts before inviting a full group.

The server starts, but the mod is not listed
- Confirm the Workshop ID in
dedicated_server_mods_setup.luais numeric and enclosed in quotation marks. - Check that the server completed a Workshop download during boot and that the mod folder exists under the server’s
modsdirectory. - Make sure the entry was added to the setup file used by this server instance, not to a different installation.
The files downloaded, but nothing changes in-game
- Add or correct the corresponding
modoverrides.luaentry; downloading alone does not enable a mod. - Verify the key includes the
workshop-prefix and thatenabled = trueis inside the mod’s table. - Restart the server after saving the file.
The mod works in Master but not in Caves
Put the entry in both shard folders. Server-wide behavior is not inherited automatically from Master/modoverrides.lua by Caves/.

Compare the option name with a client-generated configuration block. A misspelled or incorrectly nested key is ignored, and the mod falls back to its default value. Re-copy the generated block, then change one value at a time.

The server refuses to load the configuration
Inspect the table for a missing comma between entries, an extra comma, an unmatched brace, or a second return statement. Restore the last known-good backup, add one mod entry, and restart after each change.
Only one player lacks map icons
Global Positions must be installed and enabled on that player’s client. Server-side installation cannot substitute for the required client subscription.
A new mod causes crashes or disconnects
Remove the newest addition from both shard overrides, restart, and retest the world. For Wormhole Marks specifically, the February 2016 update gap and crash/disconnect reports in its comments are reasons to remove it first and verify its current Workshop status before trying again.
Keeping a modded server stable
Prefer current evidence over old popularity
Switchblade Gaming’s 2026 list is the main single source for the popular 2026 set used here, and Game Rant also identifies several of the same standout mods. A Basically Average list last updated November 3, 2025 is older and should not outweigh current Workshop information. Neither list establishes a permanent “best” ranking.
Check updates before every long campaign
The available roundups do not verify the present update date for every mod. Before committing to a seasonal or persistent world, open each Workshop page, read the latest change notes and comments, and confirm that the mod still supports the current DST build.
Change one variable at a time
Install a small set, launch a test world, and record which files changed. Add the next mod only after the previous set has survived a complete boot and a short multiplayer session. This makes a broken configuration or incompatibility easy to isolate.
Separate experimental and permanent worlds
Keep a disposable test cluster for stale, experimental, or difficulty-changing mods. Once the group confirms stability and agrees on the rules, replicate the tested files to the permanent server. Never experiment first on the only copy of a long-running save.
A practical 2026 installation checklist
- Choose a mod set that matches the group’s experience and preferred difficulty.
- Back up the current server
modsfolder and every shard’s configuration. - Have every player subscribe to the same Workshop items.
- Add each numeric ID to
dedicated_server_mods_setup.luawithServerModSetup, or verify the contents of a collection referenced byServerModCollectionSetup. - Boot once and confirm the server downloaded the files.
- Enable the mods in
modoverrides.luausing theworkshop-prefix. - Place server-wide entries in both
Master/andCaves/when both shards are active. - Copy generated option blocks rather than guessing setting names.
- Check commas, braces, and the single Lua table before restarting.
- Test with the actual players, including Global Positions on every client.
- Review Workshop update dates and comments again before making the world permanent.
