There is no launch-option string established as the best FPS setting for every Dota 2 PC. Start with an empty launch-options field, then test Vulkan on a compatible system if you want to compare renderers. Use -novid only to skip the intro, and reserve -autoconfig for resetting settings—not as a permanent performance tweak.
Which Dota 2 launch options are worth using?
Launch options are startup parameters, and what they do depends on the game. Steam documents the following options relevant to Dota 2: -novid, -vulkan and -autoconfig. The first changes startup convenience, the second selects a renderer where supported, and the third resets detected settings.

Steam’s Setting Game Launch Options page documents startup parameters including -novid and -autoconfig. Valve’s Dota 2 Vulkan README explains how to enable Vulkan and its prerequisites. Steam Support also recommends -autoconfig as an initial troubleshooting step in its software performance troubleshooting guidance.
How to compare Vulkan with the default renderer
Vulkan is an optional renderer test, not a guaranteed upgrade. Performance and compatibility depend on the system, and the official documentation does not establish an across-the-board winner between Vulkan and DirectX for current Dota 2 builds.

- Clear existing launch options. In Steam, open your Library, right-click Dota 2, choose Properties, and find Launch Options. Remove old flags so they do not interfere with the comparison.
- Record a baseline. Launch the game with no renderer override and note how it behaves in a repeatable scene or gameplay situation.
- Check Vulkan compatibility. Valve documents enabling Vulkan with
-vulkanafter installing the Vulkan Beta DLC, or selecting Vulkan in Dota 2’s Video Options. Confirm current compatibility for your operating system, GPU and driver; the README’s legacy platform minimums may no longer be current guidance. - Change only the renderer. Add
-vulkanin Steam’s Launch Options, or select Vulkan in Video Options, and restart the game. Remove any conflicting-dx9,-dx11or-gloption if present. - Allow shader caching to settle. Valve notes that the first Vulkan run may stutter briefly while shaders are cached; the stutters may subside after playing or watching a match. Do not judge the renderer from that first run alone.
- Repeat the comparison. Use the same scene or comparable gameplay conditions and compare frame-rate consistency, stability and visual issues—not just startup behavior.
If Vulkan is unstable, produces visual problems or performs worse in your repeatable comparison, remove the override and return to the default renderer.
How to recover if Dota 2’s video settings break
If a graphics change leaves the game behaving badly, Steam Support describes -autoconfig as a way to restore detected default video and performance settings. In Steam, open Library → right-click Dota 2 → Properties → Launch Options, enter -autoconfig, and start the game. After the settings are restored, remove the option so Dota 2 does not continue ignoring configuration files.

What to adjust after choosing a renderer
Use Dota 2’s in-game graphics settings to balance visual quality and performance once you have settled on a renderer. The available evidence does not establish a particular FPS effect for each setting across systems, so change settings deliberately and compare them under repeatable conditions rather than relying on a universal preset.
