GOG is the clearest choice for DRM-free PC games you can play offline. Its published policy requires GOG releases to work without Galaxy authentication, the Galaxy client, or an internet connection, and it offers downloadable offline installers. itch.io is a strong option for indie games when the creator provides a DRM-free build. Epic Games Store can run some installed single-player games offline, but that is a selective launcher feature—not a store-wide DRM-free guarantee.
Offline access applies to the game’s offline-capable content, not necessarily multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, or other connected services. Check the individual game’s requirements before buying.

GOG: the strongest documented choice for offline-first buying
GOG’s developer policy says games released on the store cannot include DRM or copy protection and should work regardless of Galaxy authentication, whether Galaxy is installed, or whether the PC has an internet connection. Its distribution terms likewise define DRM-free games as having no DRM, copy protection, or online-connection requirement, except for multiplayer games or multiplayer elements; they say single-player content is available offline unless the distribution form states otherwise. To keep a local copy, download the game’s offline installer from GOG’s website and store it on a drive you control. GOG says backup installers are generated after a build reaches the Master branch; an update released after launch may take several hours to appear in the installer system. GOG’s offline promise does not make online-only features available without a connection: multiplayer, retrieving friends, and leaderboards may stop working, while the other aspects of the game should remain unaffected under its stated policy. itch.io: good for indie games when the creator’s build fits
itch.io says it does not impose DRM and delivers files as creators uploaded them, without modifying those files. But its creator guidance says DRM-free uploads are preferred, not compulsory. That means the store’s policy alone cannot establish that a particular download is DRM-free or playable offline. If you use the itch.io app, its offline behavior has a separate condition: log in successfully once while connected. If the connection drops while the app is running, it can continue launching games and showing your collections and local library. Epic’s Offline Mode lets users play supported single-player games through the Epic Games Launcher without an internet connection. The game must already be installed, and not every game supports the mode. Multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, and other online services may be unavailable. What to check before buying
- Look for an explicit offline or DRM-free policy. GOG documents a store-wide requirement for its releases; on itch.io, verify the creator’s specific build. Epic’s support page only covers eligible games using its launcher’s Offline Mode.
- Check how you will install it. GOG offers offline installer files. On itch.io, confirm that a direct download is available and follow the creator’s installation instructions. Epic requires the supported game to be installed before you go offline.
- Separate the base game from connected features. Multiplayer and services such as cloud saves or leaderboards can require internet access even when single-player play is available offline.
- Confirm compatibility. Offline and DRM-free status do not establish compatibility with your operating system, hardware, or every game update; check the individual game’s requirements.
