Best Duardin Units to Add to a Khazalite Holds Army of Renown

The best additions depend on the duardin collection you already own. Build Valankrom’s War Throng around High Kyng Valankrom, Gholems, Clanshields and Valayan Guardians for a self-contained Khazalite force. Choose Fyrd of Fyrepeak when you already have a substantial Fyreslayers collection and want an aggressive army that grows stronger as it settles grudges. Choose Throngankor Alliance if you want Khazalite infantry protected by Kharadron mobility and shooting.

These recommendations follow Games Workshop’s October 2026 previews for Battletome: Khazalite Holds. They explain rules synergy and collection priorities, not a tournament ranking: the preview material does not provide current points, event results, stock information or a complete competitive list.

Choose the Army of Renown before buying units

An Army of Renown is a themed force whose rules reward a particular collection shape. Buying isolated models first can leave you with units that are legal but do not support the formation’s central ability. Start by deciding whether your army should be a Khazalite centrepiece force, a Fyreslayer hunting party or a mixed Khazalite–Kharadron battle line.

Army of Renown Best collection fit Core additions Defining interaction
Valankrom’s War Throng A new or mostly Khazalite collection High Kyng Valankrom, Gholems, Clanshields, Valayan Guardians Enemies that damage Valankrom become wrongdoers; units count as having a grudge mark while fighting a wrongdoer
Fyrd of Fyrepeak A sizable Fyreslayers army Hearthguard Berzerkers, Auric Hearthguard, Vulkyn Flameseekers, a Magmadroth hero and Fyreslayer support characters Each Fyrd unit gains a grudge mark after destroying an enemy; Foeseeker nominates an enemy HERO and can spread marks when that nemesis dies or is engaged at its death
Throngankor Alliance A collection combining Khazalite Holds and Kharadron Overlords Valayan Guardians or Clanshields, non-HERO Kharadron infantry, a Kharadron Skyvessel and a Kharadron ranged unit Stone and Sky protects paired Khazalite and Kharadron infantry; Transport Duardin supplies movement; Hammer and Anvil grants Crit (2 Hits) against a unit engaged by the anvil

The preview describes Valankrom’s War Throng as the formation that “doubles down” on the new Khazalite miniatures, Fyrd of Fyrepeak as an outlet for an existing Fyreslayers army, and Throngankor Alliance as a way to call in airborne Kharadron allies. Those descriptions are useful collection tests: pick the formation that matches models you can field in meaningful numbers rather than trying to force every duardin range into one list.

Valankrom’s War Throng: the strongest self-contained Khazalite build

Valankrom’s War Throng is the clearest choice if you are starting with Khazalite Holds models. Its identity is a central, durable formation that turns attacks against the High Kyng into a reason to counterattack. Games Workshop specifically names High Kyng Valankrom on his War Throne, Clanshields, Valayan Guardians and Gholems as the intended mix.

High Kyng Valankrom is the mandatory centrepiece

High Kyng Valankrom is not merely a strong model to add later; the formation’s rules are written around him. His published 2026 profile lists 16 Health, a 10-inch Move, a 3+ Save and 5 Control. His Bharadreng weapon has six attacks, hits on 3+, wounds on 3+, has Rend 2 and deals 3 Damage. Those numbers make him a substantial central threat, but the more important reason to buy him is the wrongdoer interaction: enemies that damage Valankrom are marked as wrongdoers, and units in the formation count as having one grudge mark while fighting a wrongdoer.

Plan the army around keeping the War Throne where several units can reach the same target. If an opponent chooses to attack Valankrom, the resulting wrongdoer marker gives nearby units a reason to counter-punch. If the opponent avoids him, his profile still gives the centre a fast, durable model with meaningful melee output. The formation therefore rewards a visible central anchor rather than a scattered deployment.

Gholems are the bodyguard and shock element

Games Workshop describes Gholems of Gazul and Gholems of Valaya as immovable bodyguards for the High Kyng in this Army of Renown. They are the most direct support purchase after Valankrom because they protect the model whose damage triggers the formation’s grudge interaction while also supplying hard-hitting close combat.

Use Gholems as the unit that occupies the dangerous space immediately around the War Throne. They can screen approaches, receive the first charge or follow Valankrom into a target already marked as a wrongdoer. The two named Gholem options are presented as alternatives; select the version that best fits your collection and model availability rather than assuming one is universally superior. Current points and battle-profile details were not included in the October preview, so confirm their released profiles before buying multiples.

Clanshields provide the central screen

Clanshields are the formation’s practical infantry screen. The official preview names them as Kromdron units used alongside Valankrom. Their job in this army is to occupy space in front of the War Throne and Gholems, protect approaches to the centre and give the opponent fewer clean routes to your key models.

A Clanshields unit is most useful when it is close enough to benefit from the formation’s marked-target plan but not so far forward that it fights alone. Deploy them where they can contest the central objective or stand between enemy attackers and Valankrom. Their value is structural: they make the War Throng’s centre harder to dismantle, which gives the wrongdoer mechanic more opportunities to matter.

Valayan Guardians are the elite anvil

Games Workshop calls Valayan Guardians among the finest troops available to a Khazalite Hold and describes them as defenders of the heart of duardin society. In Valankrom’s War Throng, they are the resilient elite infantry choice that can hold the most important part of the line while the War Throne and Gholems counterattack.

Choose Valayan Guardians when you want an infantry unit that can remain relevant after the first exchange. They are also the best bridge to Throngankor Alliance, where the preview specifically imagines a reinforced Valayan Guardians unit arriving from a Kharadron vessel. That cross-army usefulness makes them a safer long-term purchase than a unit that only works in one formation.

Recommended War Throng buying order

  1. High Kyng Valankrom: the formation’s rules and profile are centred on him.
  2. One Gholem unit: add the bodyguard and close-combat support that keeps the War Throne operating in the centre.
  3. Clanshields: establish a screen before expanding into additional elite units.
  4. Valayan Guardians: add a durable elite anchor for the central objective.
  5. Additional Gholems or infantry: expand only after you know whether your games need more bodyguards, screening or objective presence.

This order gives a playable formation core without assuming a points total that Games Workshop had not published in the preview.

Fyrd of Fyrepeak: the choice for an established Fyreslayers collection

Fyrd of Fyrepeak is aimed at players with “a sizable Fyreslayers army.” It is not the most efficient way to begin a Khazalite collection from nothing, because its best additions are the Fyreslayer units you already own or can field in a coherent aggressive force. Its reward structure is straightforward: destroy enemy units, accumulate grudge marks and use Foeseeker to focus the army on a nominated enemy HERO.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hearthguard Berzerkers are the melee core

Hearthguard Berzerkers are retained in Battletome: Khazalite Holds and are the natural elite melee infantry for a formation built around closing with targets. Each Fyrd unit gains a grudge mark when it destroys an enemy unit, so Berzerkers want a clear route to worthwhile fights rather than being held permanently in reserve.

Use them as the unit that converts the formation’s aggressive plan into actual kills. Their role is not simply to trade into the nearest target; they should threaten the enemy unit whose destruction advances your grudge plan or help surround the HERO chosen by Foeseeker. The preview does not give their current points or full warscroll, so do not infer a preferred unit size from this recommendation.

Auric Hearthguard add ranged pressure while advancing

Auric Hearthguard are another retained Fyreslayer infantry option. They give the army a way to apply pressure before the main melee units arrive, which matters when the formation wants to destroy units and keep moving toward its nominated target.

They are most useful in a Fyrd that would otherwise have to expose every model to reach combat. Place them where they can contribute fire while the Hearthguard Berzerkers and Magmadroth-mounted hero create the direct threat. Their inclusion does not turn the army into a stand-off gunline; it supports the aggressive advance that generates grudge marks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Vulkyn Flameseekers supply mobile infantry

Vulkyn Flameseekers are retained and fit the formation’s forward-moving identity. Add them when you need infantry that can keep pace with the army’s attack and pressure a flank or a vulnerable objective while the main Fyrd engages the Foeseeker target.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

They also help a Fyreslayer collection avoid becoming a single-speed force. A mixture of Berzerkers, Auric Hearthguard and Flameseekers gives the army more than one way to reach an enemy unit, although the exact balance should wait for the released battle profiles and your preferred battlepack.

A Magmadroth hero gives Foeseeker a credible hunter

Auric Runefather on Magmadroth and Auric Runeson on Magmadroth are both retained options. Either provides a fast, forceful threat that can pursue the enemy HERO nominated by Foeseeker. The Magmadroth is therefore more than a large model: it gives the army a natural way to make the formation’s nemesis mechanic matter across the table.

Choose the mounted leader that matches the warscroll and command style you prefer after checking the released battle profiles. The preview establishes their legality and role, but not current points, weapon details or a definitive ranking between Runefather and Runeson.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Support characters round out the Fyrd

Auric Flamekeeper and Grimhold Exile are retained support and character options. They are sensible additions after the main infantry and mounted threat are in place, because they help a Fyreslayer collection maintain its character without replacing the units that actually generate the formation’s grudge marks.

The retained list also includes Auric Runesmiter on Magmadroth, Auric Runefather, Auric Runeson, Auric Runesmiter, Ormyr and Ashtongue, and Gotrek Gurnisson as an honourable mention. These models can fit a Fyreslayer-led collection, but the preview does not establish a universal inclusion order. Treat them as choices for a collection with a specific model, narrative or battlefield plan rather than automatic purchases.

How the grudge and Foeseeker rules shape your plan

Each time a Fyrd unit destroys an enemy unit, it gains a grudge mark. This creates an escalating incentive to sequence attacks so that one unit finishes a damaged target and the next unit uses the resulting advantage. Foeseeker nominates an enemy HERO; when that nemesis dies, or is engaged at the time of its death, grudge marks can spread across the army. The practical lesson is to identify the HERO early, then preserve enough mobility and melee reach to contest it instead of wasting every unit on unrelated fights.

The Ur-gold abilities are once-per-battle effects. Games Workshop’s example, Rune of Speed, allows re-rolls of run and charge rolls for Fyrd units for the rest of the battle round. Spend such an ability on the turn when several units can convert the improved movement into a decisive engagement, not merely to make one isolated charge more comfortable.

Recommended Fyrd buying order

  1. Confirm your existing Fyreslayer core: begin with the units you already own that remain in the battletome.
  2. Hearthguard Berzerkers: establish the primary melee threat that can generate grudge marks.
  3. Auric Hearthguard: add ranged pressure so the army can damage targets before committing.
  4. Vulkyn Flameseekers: add mobile infantry for flanks and forward pressure.
  5. Auric Runefather or Runeson on Magmadroth: add the mounted hunter that can pursue the Foeseeker HERO.
  6. Auric Flamekeeper or Grimhold Exile: fill support roles after the core attack is functional.

Throngankor Alliance: pairing a Khazalite anvil with a Kharadron hammer

Throngankor Alliance is the specialist choice for players who own both Khazalite Holds and Kharadron Overlords. Its central idea is cooperation at close range: a Khazalite infantry unit holds the enemy while a Kharadron infantry unit stays beside it, and a Skyvessel provides the movement needed to place that pair where it matters.

Choose the Khazalite anvil

Valayan Guardians or Clanshields are the recommended Khazalite partners. The preview specifically imagines a reinforced Valayan Guardians unit arriving from a Kharadron vessel, making them the clearest elite anvil. Clanshields are the alternative when you want a more conventional screen that can occupy space and keep the Kharadron partner protected.

Stone and Sky targets a non-HERO Khazalite infantry unit and a non-HERO Kharadron infantry unit within half an inch of each other. While they remain together, attacks targeting them subtract 1 from wound rolls. The half-inch condition is the key collection and deployment constraint: select units that can physically maintain that distance through movement, combat and objective play.

Pick Kharadron infantry that can stay beside the anvil

The preview does not name one mandatory Kharadron infantry warscroll. Choose a non-HERO infantry unit that can remain within half an inch of the Khazalite partner and still contribute when the pair reaches combat. The unit’s job is to be the hammer beside the anvil, not a separate detachment operating on the opposite side of the table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Stone and Sky requires both units to remain together, avoid building the Alliance around a Kharadron unit whose preferred role takes it far away from the Khazalite infantry. The correct choice is the unit that can preserve the formation’s defensive pairing while supplying the ranged or melee output your collection lacks.

A Skyvessel solves the deployment problem

A Kharadron Skyvessel is the most important mobility purchase for Throngankor Alliance. Transport Duardin allows eligible infantry units to embark, move with the vessel and deploy within 6 inches after it finishes moving. Transported units cannot charge that turn, so the vessel is a positioning tool rather than a guaranteed turn-of-arrival assault.

Use the Skyvessel to place the Khazalite anvil and Kharadron hammer near the objective or enemy unit where their combined durability matters. After disembarking, arrange the two infantry units within the half-inch range required by Stone and Sky. Plan the following turn for the charge or shooting sequence instead of assuming the transport itself creates an immediate melee.

Hammer and Anvil rewards a coordinated attack

Hammer and Anvil gives a non-matching-faction unit Crit (2 Hits) against an enemy engaged by the anvil for the rest of the turn. In practical terms, the Khazalite unit must engage the target first or at least be the unit holding it in combat, while the Kharadron partner supplies the enhanced attack. This is why the Alliance should be played as one combined package rather than two independent armies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the anvil in contact with the enemy you want the Kharadron unit to punish. If the units separate, you can lose both Stone and Sky’s wound-roll protection and Hammer and Anvil’s target condition at the same time. The Alliance is strongest when transport, paired positioning and coordinated attacks are planned together.

Which Khazalite additions are safest across collections?

Clanshields, Valayan Guardians and Gholems are the most broadly useful Khazalite additions in the preview. Clanshields provide a screen for Valankrom’s War Throng and can serve as the Khazalite anvil in Throngankor Alliance. Valayan Guardians are elite defenders in the War Throng and the reinforced unit highlighted for transport in the Alliance. Gholems are the bodyguard and close-combat support that make Valankrom’s central plan function.

Unit Best role Works especially well in
Clanshields Durable infantry screen and space-holder Valankrom’s War Throng; Throngankor Alliance
Valayan Guardians Resilient elite anvil Valankrom’s War Throng; transported Throngankor Alliance package
Gholems of Gazul or Gholems of Valaya High Kyng bodyguard and hard-hitting support Valankrom’s War Throng

This is a role-based purchasing guide, not a claim that these units have the best points efficiency. Games Workshop’s October 2026 preview did not publish the complete points information needed for that conclusion.

Fyreslayer legality: what remains in the battletome

Games Workshop lists the following Fyreslayer units in Battletome: Khazalite Holds: Auric Runefather on Magmadroth, Auric Runeson on Magmadroth, Auric Runesmiter on Magmadroth, Auric Runefather, Auric Runeson, Auric Runesmiter, Auric Flamekeeper, Grimhold Exile, Vulkyn Flameseekers, Auric Hearthguard, Hearthguard Berzerkers, Ormyr and Ashtongue. Gotrek Gurnisson is mentioned as an honourable inclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Several familiar models are moving to Warhammer Legends: Vulkite Berzerkers, Auric Runemaster, Battlesmith, Doomseeker, Grimwrath Berzerker, Magmic Battleforge and Magmic Invocations. Treat those models as collection pieces with a limited matched-play window. Before using them, check the event pack and the current matched-play rules for that event; legality can differ between narrative, open and organised play.

The safest Fyreslayer purchases for the current battletome are Hearthguard Berzerkers, Auric Hearthguard, Vulkyn Flameseekers and one Magmadroth hero. That recommendation is about staying within the retained unit roster and building the Fyrd’s intended roles. Verify the released battle profiles before buying multiple copies, because the preview does not establish points or ideal unit counts.

Collection planning and common mistakes

Buying models before choosing the formation

The most expensive mistake is collecting three different centres at once. Valankrom’s War Throng wants the War Throne, Gholems and Khazalite infantry. Fyrd of Fyrepeak wants enough Fyreslayers to generate kills and pursue a Foeseeker target. Throngankor Alliance needs matched Khazalite and Kharadron infantry plus a Skyvessel. Choose one of those packages first, then add models that reinforce its rule conditions.

Assuming every duardin unit belongs in every Army of Renown

The formations have different requirements and battlefield patterns. A Fyreslayer unit may be useful in the wider battletome but does not automatically improve Valankrom’s wrongdoer plan. Likewise, a Kharadron unit that operates independently may not support Throngankor’s half-inch pairing. Judge a purchase by the ability it helps you use, not by faction identity alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring the physical range of the rules

Throngankor’s Stone and Sky requires a non-HERO Khazalite infantry unit and a non-HERO Kharadron infantry unit within half an inch. Transport Duardin deploys units within 6 inches after the vessel moves, but transported units cannot charge that turn. These distances should shape movement and deployment decisions before a game begins. Measure the intended landing point, leave room for both units and reserve the charge plan for the following turn.

Spending once-per-battle abilities too early

Fyrd of Fyrepeak’s Ur-gold abilities are once-per-battle effects. Rune of Speed, the example supplied by Games Workshop, re-rolls run and charge rolls for Fyrd units for the rest of the battle round. Use an effect like this when several units can act on the improved reliability and when reaching the nominated HERO or a high-value target changes the battle, rather than spending it on a single low-impact move.

Building around outdated matched-play assumptions

Current points, stock and tournament performance were not included in the October preview. Check the released battle profiles, the latest matched-play pack and the event’s own restrictions before finalising a list or buying multiples. This is especially important for models moving to Warhammer Legends and for any collection that relies on a specific points threshold.

A practical decision checklist

  • Choose Valankrom’s War Throng if you want a new Khazalite collection centred on a War Throne, Gholems and resilient infantry.
  • Choose Fyrd of Fyrepeak if you already own a sizable Fyreslayers army and want a kill-driven grudge mechanic with a nominated enemy HERO.
  • Choose Throngankor Alliance if you own Kharadron Overlords and want transport, positional durability and combined-arms attacks.
  • Buy Clanshields when your army needs a screen or a flexible Khazalite anvil.
  • Buy Valayan Guardians when you want an elite centre that can also ride in the Throngankor transport plan.
  • Buy Gholems when Valankrom is the centrepiece and you need bodyguards that can counterattack.
  • Buy Fyreslayer infantry and a Magmadroth hero when Fyrd of Fyrepeak is your chosen formation.
  • Check battle profiles and event rules before purchasing multiples or using models moving to Warhammer Legends.

The physical starting point for a new Khazalite player is the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Khazalite Holds Army Set: Games Workshop says it includes the new battletome and a Spearhead force. The separate Khazalite Holds battletome contains the Armies of Renown. Confirm the live contents, regional availability and current price before ordering, because those details can change.
