There is no single best Elden Ring build for every player. For a first playthrough, choose a weapon or spell style you enjoy, meet its requirements, and invest in enough survivability before concentrating on the attributes that strengthen it. For Shadow of the Erdtree, keep that character plan and add the expansion’s separate blessing progression. This guide is specifically about the June 2024 patch 1.12 era, not the game’s current balance.
What “best build” means in Elden Ring 1.12
A build is a coordinated choice of attributes, weapons or spells, equipment, and combat approach. What works well depends on whether you want to fight at close range, attack from a distance, cast spells, or lean on summoned spirits. A build that is comfortable for a first playthrough may not be the one a practiced player prefers, and official beginner guidance does not prescribe a universal stat spread.
Patch 1.12 added Shadow of the Erdtree support and identified the game as App Ver. 1.12 with Regulation Ver. 1.12.1. Bandai Namco’s notes, dated June 19, 2024 and corrected June 24, distinguish adjustments exclusive to PvP from general balance changes affecting both PvE and PvP. Later patches continued to change balance, including version 1.14 adjustments to the expansion’s final boss. Treat the recommendations here as build-selection guidance for the 1.12 launch period, not a current ranking.
How to choose a build in Elden Ring
- Pick a combat role. Decide whether you want to fight mainly up close, use ranged spells, or mix weapon attacks with magic. Choose something you will enjoy using consistently rather than chasing a supposed universal best.
- Choose equipment that fits that role. Select a preferred weapon or spell approach, then meet the requirements for the equipment you want to use. Offensive attributes matter because weapons and spells have different requirements and scaling.
- Protect your ability to survive. Vigor increases HP. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s beginner stat guide says, “Vigor is one of the most important stats to level early on, since it’s critical to your chances of surviving.” That makes survivability a sensible early priority, especially while learning enemy timing.
- Budget for resources and movement. Mind supplies FP for skills, spells, incantations, and spirit calls. Endurance supplies stamina and affects equipment load. Consider how often your chosen approach uses FP and stamina, and whether your equipment load supports the movement you want.
- Concentrate your offensive investment. Once you can use your chosen equipment and have a survivable foundation, focus on the offensive attributes that support that approach instead of spreading points across unrelated options.
This is a decision process based on the roles of the attributes, not an official publisher-prescribed build or a tested damage ranking. The official beginner material explains what attributes do; it does not establish one setup as best for all players.

What changes when you enter Shadow of the Erdtree
The DLC adds a progression layer that works alongside your character’s attributes and equipment. In Bandai Namco Europe’s June 25, 2024 strengthening guide, the Shadow Realm Blessing is described this way: “The ‘Shadow Realm Blessing’ increases a character’s abilities to deal and negate damage.” The guide also says, “The ‘Revered Spirit Ash Blessing’ increases the ability of your summoned spirits and your spectral steed to deal and negate damage.” These enhancements are available only in expansion areas.
- Scadutree Fragments are used to strengthen the relevant Shadow Realm Blessing, improving the player character’s damage dealt and negated.
- Revered Spirit Ash Blessing improves summoned spirits and Torrent in expansion areas; it is a separate benefit from strengthening the player character.
- Character build choices still matter. Blessings do not select your weapon, spell approach, attribute investment, or FP and stamina budget for you.
Patch 1.12.2, dated June 24, 2024, changed Scadutree Blessing scaling: Bandai Namco said attack and damage negation were increased in the first half of the blessing levels, with a more gradual increase in the second half. That is a patch-specific adjustment, not a reason to treat DLC blessings as a substitute for choosing a character build.

A practical starting plan for a first playthrough
- Start with one preferred weapon or spell style. Avoid trying to build around every tool you find at once.
- Check its requirements before investing. Make sure the attributes you raise let you use your chosen equipment or spells.
- Raise survivability alongside offense. Vigor supports HP, so include it in your early plan rather than putting every level into damage.
- Adjust Mind and Endurance to your actual habits. Add capacity for FP if your skills, spells, incantations, or spirit calls use it frequently; consider stamina and equipment load when planning Endurance.
- Reassess when a new tool changes your role. A weapon or spell that asks for different requirements may call for a more focused direction, rather than small investments in every offensive attribute.
- In the DLC, pursue its separate blessing progression. Strengthen the relevant blessing with Scadutree Fragments as you explore expansion areas, while keeping your character build coherent.
Is there a physical Shadow of the Erdtree build guide?
Bandai Namco’s publisher store lists Books of Knowledge, Volume III: Shadow of the Erdtree and describes it as containing a Shadow Realm progression guide and an advanced build guide. Its availability and regional access can change; the listing establishes the book’s stated scope, not current stock or pricing.
