Start a new co-op world on Default. Keen Games describes Default as Enshrouded’s baseline and recommends it for first-time players. Move to Relaxed when your group wants less friction, Hard when it wants more aggressive combat, and Survival only when everyone agrees to hunger and severe death penalties. Use Custom for one or two specific problems—such as limited play time, excessive corpse runs, or a building-heavy play style—instead of increasing every combat multiplier at once.
This guide explains what each preset changes, how to tune XP, stamina, loot, enemy pressure and death rules, and how to apply those changes safely on a dedicated server.

Which Enshrouded preset should a co-op group choose?
The four named presets are different play styles rather than steps on a simple easy-to-hard ladder. Pick the rules that fit your group’s schedule and tolerance for recovery time.
| Preset | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Default | First-time co-op groups and players who want the baseline experience | It is the least tailored option; switch to Custom later if one friction point is consistently annoying |
| Relaxed | Building-first, casual or irregularly scheduled groups | Lower enemy pressure and more resources or loot can shorten progression |
| Hard | Groups looking for more dangerous, busier combat | More enemies and greater aggression raise the chance of a wipe, especially when players are separated |
| Survival | Players who specifically want extra survival mechanics | Hunger, harsher combat and backpack loss on death create the most downtime |
| Custom | Groups with a clearly agreed change, such as faster gathering or less punishing deaths | You must tune and maintain the settings yourself, and old values can become stale after patches |
Default: the safest first campaign
Keen Games calls Default the baseline and recommends it for first-time players. It gives a new group a reference point for judging every later change. Start here unless the group already knows it dislikes survival mechanics or has very little time for recovery between sessions.

Default is also the easiest setting to explain to a new player. Everyone begins with the same expected combat, progression and death rules, so a later adjustment has a clear comparison point. Give the world at least a full session before deciding that a system is genuinely too slow or too punishing; an unlucky early death can make a balanced rule set feel harsher than it is.
Relaxed: remove friction without redesigning combat
Relaxed reduces enemy presence and increases resources and loot. That makes it useful for builders, parents’ groups, or friends who play only a short weekly session. The cost is a faster economy and less pressure in areas designed around scarcity, so exploration and gear progression may feel shorter.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose Relaxed when the whole group wants this lower-pressure experience. If only one player is struggling with gathering or storage, Default with a small Custom economy change is more precise. More loot can also make inventory management easier, but it may reduce the excitement of finding a rare item or planning a long expedition.
Hard: increase pressure, not just enemy health
Hard increases enemy quantity and aggression. Expect more encounters and less room to pull enemies one at a time. It is a better choice than arbitrarily multiplying enemy health if your group wants alert, dangerous fights rather than damage sponges.
Hard is especially demanding when players split up, travel without supplies or revive one another in a crowded area. Establish a regroup point and agree on voice-chat callouts before raising the preset. If the difficulty feels excessive, do not assume every enemy needs less health; reducing one pressure axis in Custom can preserve the intended challenge.
Survival: choose it for the rules, not the label
Survival adds hunger, harsher combat and backpack loss on death. Those mechanics affect the time cost of every expedition: a failed run can require replacing supplies, returning to the corpse and rebuilding momentum. Use it only after the group has explicitly agreed that this downtime is part of the fun.

Hunger is not merely a combat modifier; it adds preparation and resupply decisions to ordinary travel. If the group wants stronger enemies but not this logistical layer, Hard or a focused Custom profile is a better fit.
Custom: solve the actual complaint
Custom allows preset values to be modified. Treat it as a controlled experiment: identify one problem, change the smallest relevant group of settings, and leave combat multipliers alone unless combat itself is the problem.
Write the intended outcome in plain language before editing. “We need fewer storage trips during a two-hour session” points to stack size or resource gain. “Bosses die before everyone reaches the arena” points to a targeted combat adjustment. A written goal prevents a convenience change from quietly turning into a complete rebalance.
What should you change first in a Custom profile?
The official server settings expose several independent gameplay axes. The following order keeps changes understandable and limits unintended balance shifts. Every recommendation below is an editorial starting point, not a developer-authored preset; compare it with the current enshrouded_server.json documentation after each game update.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Economy and building time
For groups with limited play time, begin with resource gain, stack size, crafting speed and production timers. Modest increases reduce inventory management and waiting without making enemies stronger or weaker. Raise one economy setting at a time so you can tell whether the result is convenient or simply removes the reason to explore.

- COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed
- Resource gain: increase only enough to support the group’s normal building or crafting plans.
- Stack size: useful when several players gather together and repeatedly return to storage.
- Crafting speed and production timers: shorten downtime for a weekly schedule, but retain some planning value for long projects.
Economy changes are usually the least disruptive first step because they do not alter enemy behavior. Still, monitor how quickly recipes, gear and building materials accumulate. If a modest increase solves the stated problem, stop there rather than stacking every convenience modifier.
2. Progression XP
Combat, mining and exploration or quest XP are separate progression levers. Keep them near baseline for a first campaign. Excessively fast XP can unlock levels before the party has the gear, recipes or map knowledge normally acquired alongside them.
If your group can play only brief sessions, adjust the axis that is actually lagging. For example, a party that explores normally but spends most of its time mining should not automatically increase combat XP. Record the original value before changing it and check the current setting name in the generated JSON.
XP is a poor substitute for missing materials or slow crafting. A character who levels quickly may still lack the equipment needed for the next region, creating a level-and-gear mismatch. If that happens, return XP toward baseline before making enemies weaker.
3. Death and durability
Agree on death rules before the first expedition. Tombstone or inventory-drop behavior determines whether a mistake costs minutes or an entire evening; item durability determines how often equipment maintenance interrupts a run.
For a cooperative group that enjoys danger but cannot afford repeated corpse runs, inventory protection or materials-only drops are reasonable starting choices. They preserve the threat of losing time and supplies without making one disconnected player’s death erase the session’s progress. If everyone wants the full survival loop, leave backpack loss enabled and discuss a recovery plan before entering high-risk areas.
Death settings should be evaluated against your actual session length. A group with a whole afternoon can recover from a failed expedition; a group with forty-five minutes may spend its entire meeting replacing a backpack. Neither choice is universally correct, but everyone should know the rule before carrying valuable materials into a dangerous zone.
4. Combat pressure
Combat can be tuned through enemy amount, enemy health, enemy damage, boss health, boss damage and simultaneous attacks. Change only one axis at a time:
- Start with enemy amount if the group wants more activity and tactical positioning.
- Adjust enemy damage if mistakes should be punished more sharply.
- Adjust enemy health only when fights end too quickly despite appropriate damage and positioning.
- Use boss-specific health or damage changes for a targeted boss challenge rather than raising every encounter.
- Change simultaneous attacks cautiously; this can turn a manageable group into an unavoidable burst if several enemies hit together.
Keeping health, damage, boss values and simultaneous attacks at baseline while adjusting economy or death friction is the most reliable way to make co-op feel less tedious without creating damage sponges.
Do not raise enemy health, enemy damage and enemy quantity simultaneously and then judge the result after one wipe. You will not know whether the problem was crowd density, burst damage or excessively long fights. Restore the backup, test one variable and give the group enough encounters to form a useful opinion.
5. Survival friction
Hunger, shroud timing, stamina and weather-related pressure may be configurable in the current version. These systems interact: reducing stamina while increasing hunger can make ordinary travel consume more supplies and time than expected. Make one survival change, test it for a session, then decide whether another is still necessary.

Travel changes are easy to underestimate because they affect every activity rather than one boss or region. If the complaint is that expeditions feel cramped, check stamina and shroud timing separately. If food preparation is the issue, adjust hunger rather than weakening enemies. Keep notes so the group can reverse a change that creates a new problem.
A balanced Custom starting profile
Use this as a discussion checklist, not as a fixed code block. The exact property names and allowed ranges can change, so copy them from Keen Games’ current documentation or from a freshly generated server file.
| Category | Editorial starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy health and damage | Keep at baseline | Preserves intended combat pacing and avoids sponge-like enemies |
| Boss health and damage | Keep at baseline | Maintains encounter identity while other friction is adjusted |
| Simultaneous attacks | Keep at baseline | Avoids sudden burst deaths that are hard to diagnose |
| Resource gain and stack size | Make a modest increase only if the group has a short weekly schedule | Reduces hauling and gathering time without changing combat |
| Crafting and production timers | Shorten selectively | Targets real-world waiting rather than progression itself |
| Combat, mining and exploration XP | Leave at baseline initially | Keeps level, gear and map progression aligned |
| Death drops | Choose inventory protection or materials-only drops when corpse runs block play | Preserves expedition risk while limiting session-ending recovery |
| Stamina, hunger, shroud and weather | Change only after identifying a specific frustration | These systems compound one another and are difficult to balance by guesswork |
After one or two sessions, ask the group a concrete question: “What caused the lost time?” If the answer is hauling, change storage-related economy settings. If it is a wipe, inspect enemy amount or damage rather than multiplying health. If it is a level-and-gear mismatch, restore XP toward baseline.
Keep a dated note of the old and new values. A simple change log makes it possible to compare settings after a patch and prevents players from arguing over which adjustment caused a new behavior. Custom is most effective when it remains reversible.
How to change settings on a dedicated server
Dedicated-server configuration is separate from choosing a hosted service. The gameplay values live in enshrouded_server.json, with a file for each game world.
- Stop the server completely. Do not edit the file while the process is writing to it.
- Locate the world’s
enshrouded_server.json. Confirm that you are editing the file for the intended world, not a test or backup instance. - Make a versioned backup. Keep the original file and label the copy with the date and game version so you can roll back one change.
- Open the current settings documentation or a newly generated file. Copy property names and accepted values exactly; do not rely on an older guide’s spelling or ranges.
- Edit only the agreed properties. Preserve valid JSON syntax, including quotation marks, commas and matching braces.
- Save, then restart the server. A restart is required for the server to read the edited values.
- Join with a test character or low-risk expedition. Verify the behavior before announcing the new rules to the whole group.
- Record the change. Note what changed, why and when. This prevents arguments about whether a patch or a setting caused a new behavior.
Make changes during a planned maintenance window and tell players when the world will be unavailable. If a host provides a web panel, the same principles still apply: stop the instance, back up the file, edit the correct world, restart and verify.
If the file is missing
Keen Games’ settings documentation says the server creates a fresh configuration file on startup when one is missing. Start the server once, stop it cleanly, and then edit the generated file rather than creating a schema from memory.
If an older file will not load
Move the old file aside instead of deleting your only copy, then allow the server to regenerate a clean file. Reapply changes one at a time from the current documentation. This removes obsolete properties and malformed syntax as possible causes.
How to verify a change
- Check the server log for JSON or configuration errors during startup.
- Confirm that the server remains online after a full restart.
- Test the specific mechanic you changed: gather one resource, craft one item, fight a controlled encounter or inspect the death result in a safe area.
- If the value has no visible effect, restore the backup and verify that the property name and scope match the current documentation.
Dedicated-server memory and operational planning
Keen Games’ FAQ says a dedicated server should use no more than 6 GB of physical RAM (Keen Games, 2025). Treat that as the published planning figure, not a complete capacity formula. Player count, world activity, operating system overhead and other services still affect the machine’s headroom.
The 6 GB note is a planning limit, not a promise that every machine with exactly that amount will perform identically. Leave room for the operating system and any control panel, monitoring tools or other game services on the same host. Watch actual memory use and stability after players begin exploring and building; do not infer capacity from the difficulty preset alone.
Before choosing self-hosting or a managed service, decide who owns backups, updates and incident recovery. A hosting plan is an operational choice, not a difficulty preset. Verify the provider’s backup policy, server region, player limit, restart controls and current pricing independently; those details are not established by the gameplay documentation.

Self-hosting can offer direct file access and control, while managed hosting can reduce maintenance work. Compare the total cost of the service, the time required to administer it, backup retention and the consequences of an outage. Do not select a provider solely because its plan advertises a certain number of slots; confirm that the hardware, region and backup tools fit your group.

Raising every combat multiplier together
This hides the cause of difficulty spikes. Restore the backup, return health and damage to baseline, then increase enemy amount or one other axis only if the group still wants more pressure.
Using XP to solve a resource problem
Faster XP does not fix hauling, crafting queues or missing materials. Adjust resource gain, stack size or production timers instead, and leave progression near baseline.
Choosing Survival without agreeing on corpse recovery
Backpack loss can turn a short mistake into a long recovery. Explain the rule before the first expedition and decide whether the group has enough uninterrupted time for it.

Editing the wrong world
A dedicated host can contain separate files for multiple worlds or test instances. Confirm the world identifier and make a small, observable change before assuming the entire server ignored your edit.
Changing too many settings between sessions
Large batches make feedback meaningless. If players report that progression, combat and gathering all feel different, roll back and reintroduce adjustments one category at a time.

- New to Enshrouded? Choose Default.
- Want building and exploration with less interruption? Choose Relaxed, or keep Default and make a small economy adjustment in Custom.
- Want busier, more dangerous fights? Choose Hard. If only one encounter type feels weak, use Custom rather than raising all enemy health.
- Want hunger and meaningful backpack loss? Choose Survival after agreeing on recovery time.
- Have one measurable complaint? Choose Custom, change one axis, and keep a dated backup.
Revisit the decision after a full session, not after a single unlucky death. The goal is a rule set that keeps all players engaged: enough danger to make preparation matter, enough resources to support the group’s schedule, and no hidden penalty that one player thought everyone had accepted.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best Enshrouded server settings for a new co-op group?
Start with Default. It is Keen Games’ baseline and its recommended choice for first-time players. Play long enough to identify a specific frustration before changing anything.
Is Relaxed easier than Default?
Relaxed reduces enemy presence and increases resources and loot, so it generally creates less friction. Its faster economy can also shorten progression, making it a different pace rather than a universally better version of Default.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Should we choose Hard or increase enemy health in Custom?
Choose Hard when you want more enemies and greater aggression across the world. Use Custom when one combat axis needs adjustment. Raising only enemy health often creates longer fights without adding better decisions, so keep health at baseline unless that is specifically the problem.
Does Survival make enemies the strongest?
Survival combines harsher combat with hunger and backpack loss on death. Its defining difference is the added survival and recovery burden, not simply a higher position on an easy-to-hard scale.
How can I change XP, stamina or loot on a dedicated server?
Stop the server, back up the world’s enshrouded_server.json, and edit the exact properties listed in the current Keen Games documentation or a newly generated file. Restart and test the one mechanic you changed. Property names and ranges can change after updates.
What death setting is best for casual co-op?
Inventory protection or materials-only drops can preserve danger while preventing one mistake from consuming the whole session. Agree on the rule before the first expedition; groups that want full recovery pressure should leave backpack loss enabled.
How much RAM does an Enshrouded dedicated server need?
Keen Games’ FAQ publishes a planning figure of no more than 6 GB of physical RAM for a dedicated server. Actual headroom also depends on player activity, the operating system and other services, so monitor the machine rather than treating the figure as a universal sizing formula.
Can I edit the JSON while players are online?
No. Stop the server first, make a dated backup, edit valid JSON and restart. Editing a live file risks an overwrite or malformed configuration, and the server will not reliably apply changes until it reads the file on startup.
What should I do if the settings file is missing?
Start the server once so it can create a fresh file, stop it cleanly, then edit that generated file. If an old file will not load, move it aside and regenerate rather than deleting your only backup.

The Bottom Line
For most new groups, choose Default. Move to Relaxed for lower friction, Hard for busier and more aggressive combat, and Survival only when hunger and backpack loss are part of the intended experience. If one issue is slowing your sessions, use Custom: change one economy, progression, combat or death axis at a time, keep enemy health and damage at baseline initially, and maintain a dated backup of enshrouded_server.json. Recheck Keen Games’ current settings documentation after every patch.
