On Windows, start with Task Manager → Performance → GPU and watch the memory graphs while the game or other workload is running. For NVIDIA, nvidia-smi can show device-level framebuffer memory where supported; on Windows in WDDM mode, it does not provide reliable per-process GPU-memory figures. The key is to identify which memory pool the counter represents: dedicated local memory, shared system memory, or a device-wide total.

Check VRAM usage with the tool that fits your GPU

Monitoring tools do not all measure the same thing. Task Manager is a convenient Windows overview; vendor software or command-line tools can add detail, but platform and driver support matter. If a PC has more than one graphics adapter, first confirm that the game is using the GPU whose readings you are watching.

GPU or platform Where to check What to keep in mind
Windows, any supported GPU Task Manager → Performance → select the relevant GPU Inspect its memory graphs during the workload. Labels and layout can vary by Windows release; on integrated graphics, shared memory is not the same as physical VRAM.
NVIDIA, supported systems Run nvidia-smi in a terminal Reports device management information, including framebuffer memory values where supported. On Windows WDDM, its per-process GPU-memory field is unavailable.
Intel integrated graphics DxDiag → Display Devices → Dedicated Memory This is a reported value, not proof of a separate physical VRAM bank. Interpret it with shared-memory information and the integrated architecture.
AMD graphics on Windows Task Manager → Performance → GPU, or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition performance metrics AMD documents Task Manager GPU monitoring for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update and later; exact availability and interface depend on Windows, hardware, and software installation.

Windows Task Manager

  1. Open Task Manager (press Ctrl+Shift+Esc).
  2. Select Performance, then choose the GPU entry used by the game or application.
  3. Start or return to the workload and observe the GPU memory graphs while reproducing the scene or task that seems slow.

AMD describes GPU monitoring in Task Manager for supported Windows versions; the interface can differ between releases. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition also offers PC performance metrics, including GPU and memory usage, when supported by the installed software and hardware. AMD: Monitor GPU usage in Task Manager and AMD Software performance metrics.

NVIDIA with nvidia-smi

Run nvidia-smi to inspect the NVIDIA device’s reported framebuffer total, reserved, used, and free memory where those metrics are supported. The device-level reading is useful even when an individual process cannot be identified. NVIDIA documents that per-process GPU memory is unavailable on Windows when the driver is in WDDM mode, because Windows’ kernel-mode driver manages that memory. NVIDIA nvidia-smi documentation.

The same utility is documented for supported NVIDIA systems on Linux. Metrics vary with GPU and platform support; unsupported values may be omitted or displayed as a dash. On NVIDIA vGPU systems, results depend on whether the command runs in a guest or on a supported hypervisor, so a guest’s view should not be assumed to describe the full physical GPU. NVIDIA nvidia-smi documentation.

Intel integrated graphics with DxDiag

Intel’s documented path is DxDiag → Display Devices → Dedicated Memory. Use that reading as a driver-reported figure, not an automatic measure of a discrete VRAM pool. Intel integrated processor graphics use system memory rather than a separate graphics-memory bank. Intel: How to check graphics memory in Windows.

Understand what the memory number means

Before treating a graph as VRAM pressure, identify whether it reports local/framebuffer memory, system memory shared with graphics, per-process use, or a device-wide total. Those numbers answer different questions and can differ across tools.

Dedicated or framebuffer memory

For a discrete GPU, local graphics memory is the memory physically attached to the graphics card. NVIDIA calls this framebuffer (FB) memory and reports total, reserved, used, and free amounts. Its reported total can be affected by ECC and internal reservations; for GPUs managed by the operating system as NUMA nodes, accounting accuracy also depends on the OS. NVIDIA notes that allocated pages may remain after a process exits, and operating-system memory pressure can affect reporting. A lingering reading after closing a game therefore does not, by itself, prove that the game is still using that memory. NVIDIA nvidia-smi documentation.

Shared system memory on integrated graphics

Intel says integrated processor graphics do not use a separate memory bank for graphics and video. Windows’ “Shared System Memory” figure is the limit the OS may allow graphics to use at a given time; it is not an ongoing reservation of that amount. Intel also says its driver may report 128 MB of fictitious dedicated video memory for compatibility with applications that do not understand unified memory architecture. Treat that as a compatibility report, not a physical VRAM measurement. Intel graphics memory FAQ.

AMD has a platform-specific exception: Variable Graphics Memory on Ryzen AI 300 series and later can reallocate system RAM to integrated graphics through a BIOS setting. RAM converted to this dedicated allocation is no longer available to the CPU and system. This feature is not a general method for adding physical VRAM to any GPU. AMD: Variable Graphics Memory.

Device totals versus process readings

A device-level total tells you what the GPU reports across its memory pool; a per-process figure attempts to attribute memory to one application. NVIDIA’s per-process value represents framebuffer memory on discrete GPUs or system memory on integrated GPUs, but that value is unavailable on Windows WDDM. Do not compare a device total from one tool directly with a process figure from another as though they were equivalent. NVIDIA nvidia-smi documentation.

Decide whether VRAM is actually the bottleneck

High memory use alone is not proof that a game is constrained. Some applications can use several times the available GPU memory, while others may become unstable as they approach the limit. NVIDIA gives no universal percentage at which a bottleneck begins. Its documented 75% notification threshold applies specifically to Windows Event Log reporting by RTX Enterprise drivers on professional RTX and Quadro workstation GPUs; the report is sent once per process and is not a general gaming cutoff. 1. Record the context. Note the GPU, operating system, driver mode if relevant, workload, and memory pool or counter being shown.
  2. Reproduce the problem. Watch the readings while the slowdown, error, or instability occurs; an idle reading or a reading taken after the application exits may not represent the workload.
  3. Look for a repeatable pattern. Near-capacity local-memory use matters most when it recurs alongside workload-specific errors, instability, or performance changes.
  4. Check other causes too. Compare memory readings with GPU utilization and other system indicators. A slow frame rate can have causes other than graphics memory, and a memory counter alone does not identify which component is limiting performance.
  5. Reduce demand only if the evidence points to memory pressure. Lowering memory-heavy settings or otherwise reducing the workload’s demand may help; consider hardware with more suitable local memory only after confirming the needs of the particular application.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Reading shared memory as installed VRAM: on Intel integrated graphics, shared memory is system RAM the OS may permit graphics to use, not a separate pool reserved in advance.
  • Expecting per-process numbers from NVIDIA on Windows WDDM: use supported device-level readings instead; the per-process field is unavailable in that mode.
  • Assuming a process exit immediately clears the counter: NVIDIA documents that framebuffer pages may remain allocated after a process terminates.
  • Using one percentage as a universal warning line: application behavior near capacity differs, so confirm pressure against the symptoms in the workload.
  • Assuming a virtual machine sees the whole GPU: vGPU monitoring results depend on whether the tool runs in a guest or on the hypervisor.
