For most Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X owners, the right choice is a reputable Cat6 Ethernet patch cable with standard RJ45 connectors and just enough length to reach the router or network switch without being pulled tight. Cat5e is also technically sufficient for a gigabit connection, so you do not need an expensive Cat8 or “gaming” cable. Wired Ethernet can reduce Wi-Fi-related instability, but no cable can guarantee lag-free play.
Quick picks: which Ethernet cable should you buy?
| Choice | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cat6 UTP patch cable | Most Xbox One setups | A sensible balance of availability, price, and capability. Choose a reputable cable with copper conductors and the length you need. |
| Cat5e patch cable | Lowest-cost option or a cable you already own | Properly made Cat5e supports gigabit Ethernet at standard home-network distances; Cat6 is not a requirement. |
| Slim or flat Cat6 | Routing along a baseboard or around furniture | Convenient in tight spaces, but protect it from crushing, sharp folds, and heavy furniture. |
| Cat6a | Long, permanent, or electrically noisy runs | More headroom for specialized installations, but thicker and less flexible than needed for most console patch cables. |
Recommended Ethernet cables for Xbox One
Best overall: Monoprice Cat6 Ethernet Patch Cable
Monoprice’s Cat6 patch cable is a straightforward choice for a typical console-to-router connection. Its product page lists UTP construction, 24 AWG stranded pure bare-copper conductors, 550 MHz bandwidth, snagless boots, multiple lengths and colors, and a lifetime warranty. The listed 25-foot black version was $9.99 and in stock on August 18, 2026; the same page also showed a newer FLEXboot version at $10.39 for the selected 25-foot option. Prices and availability can change. See the Monoprice Cat6 cable product page for current options.
Best for tight routing: slim or flat Cat6
If a round cable is difficult to hide along a baseboard or behind furniture, consider a slim or flat Cat6 cable. Cable Matters lists these options in its patch-cable catalog. Check the length and availability of the specific configuration before ordering. A flat cable is a routing convenience, not a latency upgrade; avoid sharply folding or pinching it.
Best for a long or permanent run: Cat6a
Cat6a can make sense for a longer structured-cabling installation, a route near substantial electrical interference, or a run intended to support future 10-Gbps equipment. For a short cable from an Xbox to a nearby router, it is usually thicker, stiffer, and more costly than necessary. Cable Matters describes the category trade-offs in its Xbox Ethernet cable guide.

Best budget option: reputable Cat5e
If you already have an intact Cat5e patch cable, or find one materially cheaper than Cat6, it is a reasonable choice for Xbox One. Cat5e can support gigabit Ethernet over standard home-network distances when properly made and terminated. When prices are close, Cat6 is an easy default, but it should not be mistaken for a gaming-speed boost.
What kind of Ethernet cable does an Xbox One use?
Xbox One consoles use a standard RJ45 Ethernet port. Connect the console to a router or network switch with an ordinary straight-through Ethernet patch cable. You do not need a telephone lead, HDMI cable, USB adapter, proprietary accessory, or cable marketed specifically for gaming. Microsoft provides a wired-connection support page for Xbox One.
Cat5e vs. Cat6 vs. Cat6a, Cat7, and Cat8
| Category | Practical verdict for Xbox One | Category capability or trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Cat5e | Sufficient for a properly working gigabit connection | Supports up to 1 Gbps at 100 MHz for up to 100 meters, according to Cable Matters’ category overview. |
| Cat6 | Best default for a new patch cable | Offers greater specification headroom; Cable Matters lists 10-Gbps capability over shorter distances, up to 55 meters. |
| Cat6a | For long or permanent installations, not a short gaming patch cable | Supports 10 Gbps up to 100 meters in the category overview; typically bulkier and less flexible. |
| Cat7 | Usually unnecessary for an ordinary RJ45 home connection | Higher-specification and shielding claims rarely provide a practical benefit to an Xbox One. |
| Cat8 | Overkill | Designed for very high signaling capability over shorter distances; it does not make the console’s game-server connection inherently faster. |
These are cable-category capabilities, not guarantees of the speed an Xbox will receive. The console, router or switch, service plan, and wider network path also matter. Category figures and comparisons are covered in Cable Matters’ Xbox cable guide.

Does Cat6 reduce lag compared with Cat5e?
No—not when both cables provide a clean, stable gigabit link. A cable’s category does not automatically lower ping. Cat6 is a practical default because it is widely available and offers headroom, but a sound Cat5e cable can perform just as well for online play on an Xbox One.
Replacing a cable may help if the old one is damaged, poorly terminated, kinked, crushed, too short and under tension, or intermittently losing its link. A faulty cable or connector can also contribute to a link negotiating at 100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps. A higher category will not fix a distant game server, ISP congestion, router bufferbloat, or Wi-Fi problems affecting other devices.
- Latency or ping: The time for data to travel to a game service and back.
- Jitter: Variation in that latency.
- Packet loss: Data that fails to arrive.
- Throughput: The amount of data transferred over time, such as download speed.
- Link negotiation: The physical Ethernet speed established between the console and network equipment.
A cable can help resolve physical-link instability or packet loss. It cannot guarantee lower server latency or more frames per second.

How to choose cable construction and length
Round or flat?
A round cable is the sensible default for durability, exposed routes, frequently moved cables, or longer runs. A flat cable can be easier to tuck along a baseboard or around furniture, but it is more vulnerable to crushing, sharp bends, and damage from heavy objects. Use a flat cable only where the route can protect it from those hazards.
Unshielded or shielded?
For ordinary indoor home use, unshielded twisted pair (UTP) Cat6 is generally appropriate. Shielding is a specialized choice for certain electrically noisy environments or structured-cabling installations; it is not a general anti-lag feature. The installation and connected hardware need to suit shielded cabling, and the cable may be thicker and harder to route. Monoprice lists its recommended Cat6 patch cable as UTP; Cable Matters’ catalog includes shielded Cat6a options.

- Measure the actual path from the router or switch to the Xbox, including the way the cable will go around furniture or along a wall.
- Add enough slack that neither connector is under tension and the cable can follow gentle bends.
- Choose the shortest length that comfortably covers that route. Typical starting points are 1–3 feet for adjacent devices, 5–7 feet within an entertainment center, and 10–25 feet for a room-to-room route.
- For a 50–100-foot route, plan cable management carefully; for a permanent installation, consider whether Cat6a and a structured-cabling approach are appropriate.
Do not leave a long excess coil behind the console or run the cable where doors, furniture, feet, or a heavy rug can crush it. Avoid tight bends and, where practical, do not run it tightly alongside power cables for the whole route. Cable Matters also advises measuring the route, leaving slack, and avoiding rugs, doorways, power cables, and sharp bends in its cable-routing guidance.

How to connect an Xbox One by Ethernet
- Turn on the Xbox One and router.
- Plug one end of the RJ45 patch cable into the Ethernet port on the console and the other end into an available LAN or Ethernet port on the router or network switch.
- On the Xbox, open Settings and go to Network or Network settings. On older dashboards, the path is Settings > All settings > Network > Network settings.
- Confirm the console identifies the connection as wired, then select Test network connection.
- If needed, run the multiplayer or NAT test available in the current network-settings interface.
Belkin documents this connection sequence and the older menu path in its Xbox One and Xbox One S wired setup guide. Xbox dashboard labels can change with software updates, so the exact wording may differ.
Troubleshoot a wired connection that fails or still lags
Xbox does not detect the Ethernet cable
- Unplug and firmly reconnect both ends; check whether a connector’s retaining tab is broken or the plug feels loose.
- Try another LAN port on the router, then test a known-good Ethernet cable.
- Restart the router and Xbox.
- Temporarily remove intermediate devices such as a switch, wall coupler, powerline adapter, or mesh-node Ethernet port, then test the direct connection.
- Check whether the router port works with another device.
- If several known-good cables and router ports fail only with the Xbox, the console’s Ethernet port or hardware may be at fault.
A support troubleshooting guide likewise recommends trying another cable or port and says persistent failure may point to a console Ethernet-port problem: Motorola support troubleshooting.
The wired link is slow or disconnects intermittently
A 100-Mbps link where gigabit is expected, or repeated wired disconnections, can point to a damaged cable, incomplete termination, loose plug, poor coupler, faulty switch or router port, or damaged console port. Try one continuous known-good cable and a different router LAN port before buying a higher category. Each inline coupler adds another connection point that can fail.

The connection works, but online play still lags
First confirm the Xbox is actually using the wired connection. Then consider whether the symptom is packet loss, jitter, or consistently high ping rather than simply a slow download. Check NAT status and whether another device is saturating upload bandwidth. Router quality-of-service or smart-queue settings, ISP congestion at peak hours, and game-server region or distance can all affect play. If only one game is affected, the cause may be title- or server-specific.
A cable from the Xbox to a mesh node does not make the entire path wired if that node uses wireless backhaul. Powerline networking can be useful when direct Ethernet is impractical, but its performance depends heavily on the home’s electrical wiring. A basic gigabit switch is normally transparent in ordinary home use; a faulty or overloaded one can still be a problem.
Quick Recap
Buying checklist
- Choose Cat6 for a new general-purpose cable; use Cat5e if it is already available or materially cheaper.
- Check for standard RJ45 connectors, the correct length, intact locking tabs, and a reputable seller or manufacturer.
- Prefer clearly specified copper conductors. Monoprice’s listed cable, for example, specifies stranded pure bare copper, but an unclear listing alone is not proof that a cable uses copper-clad aluminum.
- Use round cable for the more durable default; choose flat or slim cable only when tight routing justifies the extra care.
- Do not pay a premium for “gaming” branding, LED features, gold-plated contacts, or Cat8 on the promise of lower ping. Gold plating may help with corrosion resistance, but it does not establish a gaming-latency advantage.
