For Act 1, use Gustave, Lune, and Maelle while you learn Mark, elemental Stains, and Maelle’s Stance system. Weapon scaling, character resource loops, progression stage, Lumina capacity, and your ability to parry or dodge all matter more than a universal tier list.
For the strongest late-game damage team, use Maelle, Sciel, and Verso. Maelle converts a setup turn into explosive burst damage, Sciel supplies Foretell, Twilight State, AP support, and damage amplification, while Verso ramps his rank and finishes with powerful multi-hit attacks. If you want more break pressure, shield utility, and adaptability, replace Verso with Monoco.

That is not the best team for every point in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In Act 1, Gustave, Lune, and Maelle are the most practical progression core. In Act 2, weapon passives and scaling begin to matter much more. In Act 3 and the postgame, specialized weapons, mastered Pictos, Luminas, and update content make aggressive burst builds substantially more attractive.

If you are buying the game before following this guide, check the current platform and regional listing for the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 physical edition. The edition you play does not change the builds below, but weapon access, update installation, and postgame availability do matter.
Best Expedition 33 party compositions
| Party | Best for | Why it works | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maelle + Sciel + Verso | Maximum late-game burst | Sciel creates a damage window, Maelle delivers the main burst, and Verso adds escalating multi-hit damage. | Missed parries, dodges, or attacks can make the party feel fragile and AP-hungry. |
| Maelle + Sciel + Monoco | Flexible postgame team | Maelle and Sciel retain their burst synergy while Monoco covers break, shields, AP support, and enemy-specific utility. | Usually less focused on pure single-target damage than the Verso version. |
| Gustave + Lune + Maelle | Act 1 progression | Gustave marks targets and builds Charges, Lune handles elemental Stains and support, and Maelle supplies direct physical damage. | Gustave is mainly an early-game recommendation rather than a mandatory endgame pick. |
| Lune + Sciel + Maelle | Elemental, Burn, and burst synergy | Lune supplies elemental sequences and Burn interaction, Sciel builds Foretell and amplifies the payoff, and Maelle finishes priority targets. | Requires more planning than simply attacking with every character. |
| Lune + Sciel + Monoco | Elemental damage with utility | Monoco adds masks, break pressure, shield answers, and AP tools while Lune and Sciel establish damage windows. | Less straightforward if you have not yet learned Monoco’s mask and skill options. |
Only three characters can be active in battle at once, so build around a clear job for each slot. The six playable characters do not need to be equally optimized at all times. A party with one reliable setup character, one damage-window character, and one flexible support or breaker is usually easier to operate than three characters competing for the same resource or turn.

How to build characters correctly
1. Match attributes to the weapon
Do not assign attributes from a universal tier list. Weapons in Expedition 33 often determine the intended scaling and may encourage very different versions of the same character. Before spending attribute points, inspect the weapon you actually have equipped and prioritize the attributes it rewards.
This is particularly important when moving between Acts. A weapon that is excellent in Act 1 can become a poor investment after a later weapon changes the character’s scaling, passive effect, or resource loop. When two weapons seem close in raw damage, the one that supports your preferred rotation, survivability, or AP economy can be the better practical choice.
2. Build around the character’s resource loop
- Gustave generates Charges and uses Mark to establish targets for the party.
- Lune creates and spends elemental Stains to empower spells.
- Maelle rotates through combat Stances and looks for the correct moment to finish.
- Sciel applies and consumes Foretell while using Twilight State.
- Verso raises and preserves his rank through successful attacks and defensive timing.
- Monoco advances the Almighty Wheel and changes his available options through masks.
A build is successful when its weapon, attributes, skills, Pictos, Luminas, and party partners all make that loop easier to complete. A list of high-damage effects without a way to generate AP, survive the setup turn, or reach the required state is not a complete build.
3. Treat Pictos as temporary equipment and Luminas as the long-term version
Equip a Picto to benefit from its effect while learning or collecting it. Once the Picto has been mastered, its effect can be converted into a Lumina, provided you have enough Lumina points. This lets you keep useful effects without filling every equipment slot with the original Picto.
Early in the game, use the best effects you have rather than saving every point for an imagined final build. Later, you can move foundational effects such as AP generation, first-turn actions, critical support, parry rewards, and survivability into Luminas and reserve equipment slots for encounter-specific choices.
4. Separate progression builds from postgame builds
Many spectacular late-game setups assume high-level weapons, a large Lumina-point budget, rare Pictos, postgame encounters, and update content. They are useful targets, but they are not sensible Act 1 instructions.

- weapon availability and matching attribute scaling;
- reliable AP generation;
- healing, Shell, or other ways to recover from mistakes;
- resource generation that does not require a perfect turn;
- enough defensive support to keep the party alive while learning parries and dodges.
For postgame optimization, you can trade safety for effects such as Glass Cannon, Inverted Affinity, Painted Power, and perfect-parry rewards. These are powerful precisely because they ask you to maintain offensive momentum or defensive accuracy. If you are struggling on Expert difficulty, replace some of them with healing, AP, Shell, Second Chance, First Life, Recovery, or parry-sustain effects.
Act-by-act progression plan
Act 1: learn Mark, Stains, and Stances
Start with Gustave, Lune, and Maelle. This team teaches three important systems without demanding an elaborate late-game setup:
- Use Gustave to apply Mark or establish the target that the party wants to attack.
- Use Lune’s Free Aim shots and elemental skills to create Stains, then spend them on the appropriate spell.
- Use Maelle’s attacks to manage her Stance and take advantage of the damage window when it appears.
Gustave’s early supportive-damage setup favors Vitality first and Agility second, with Abysseram as the broad weapon recommendation. His key skills are Lumiere Assault, Overcharge, Powerful, Marking Shot, and Recovery From Fire. Marking Shot is especially valuable because it lets Gustave establish a target for his allies.
Lune should use Trebuchim in Act 1. Its Free Aim shots can generate a random Stain, giving her a way to start an elemental sequence before spending AP on a spell. Her early skill package is Earth Rising, Ice Lance, Immolation, Electrify, Thermal Transfer, and Healing Light. You do not need every option equipped at once; choose the elements and support tools that match the encounter.
Useful early Pictos and Luminas for this team include Versatile, SOS Shell, Burning Shots, Critical Burn, Dead Energy II, Exposing Attack, Marking Shots, and Staggering Attack. For Gustave specifically, Rewarding Mark and Dodger are natural fits for a setup character who wants to mark targets while remaining useful after the opening turn.
Act 2: reassess weapons and passives
Act 2 is the point where you should stop treating weapons as simple damage upgrades. Recheck every character’s scaling and passive effect after obtaining new equipment.
- Lune: move toward Kralim. It rewards changing spell elements and can recover AP when Lune uses a Stain, making it a natural bridge between her resource loop and her spell damage.
- Sciel: use Rangeson as the cited Act 2 progression option. It adds survivability and healing utility while retaining a useful role for Agility and Luck.
- Monoco: use Nusaro for an Act 2 setup that combines Vitality and Agility and rewards parrying or matching skills to the Almighty Wheel.
Lune’s Act 2 skill options include Wildfire, Ice Lance, Thunderfall, Earth Rising, Mayhem, and Thermal Transfer. Keep Thermal Transfer when your party is consistently applying Burn; otherwise, use the elemental and support skills that best answer the enemies in the area.
Sciel becomes more valuable as the party learns to plan around Foretell. Focused Foretell, Marking Card, Spectral Sweep, Twilight Slash, Phantom Blade, and Sealed Fate form her early-to-midgame toolkit, with Grim Harvest and Plentiful Harvest adding more options in Act 2.
Act 3: specialize around a chosen payoff
By Act 3, choose whether your party is primarily trying to burst one target, break or bypass defenses, sustain through a difficult fight, or combine elemental and status effects. The strongest weapons and Lumina combinations are not automatically the best choices if they make your rotation too demanding.
The cited Act 3 progression weapons are:
- Lune — Choralim: the late-game choice for multi-hit and critical-oriented play. The recommended attribute direction emphasizes Agility and Defense rather than blindly stacking damage.
- Sciel — Charnon: the late-game choice. It guarantees critical hits during Twilight State and improves the consistency of Foretell-based damage windows. Luck is the primary late-game priority, paired with Defense for this setup.
- Monoco — Joyaro: a late-game weapon that scales with Agility and Defense, starts Monoco in Almighty Mask, and rewards avoiding damage.
- Verso — Chevalam: the aggressive recommendation, with Agility first and Luck second. It is not the only viable Verso weapon, but it supports a high-output, rank-focused approach.
Maelle should also be specialized at this stage, but her exact weapon and attribute priorities should follow the scaling of the stage-appropriate weapon you choose. Her purpose remains consistent: reach or exploit her strongest Stance, receive a favorable damage window, and spend that window on her best finisher.
Postgame and update content
Do not treat postgame build lists as universal campaign advice. The free Thank You Update added additional content, including Verso’s Drafts, and later third-party references incorporate Patch 1.5.0 effects and postgame encounters. If a build mentions a postgame weapon, rare Picto, update-specific encounter, or a large collection of mastered Luminas, label it as a postgame setup and do not expect it to be available during the main story.
Character builds
Gustave build: early-game Mark and Charge support
Role: early-game damage, Mark application, Charge generation, and team setup.
Weapon and attributes: use Abysseram for the broad progression recommendation. Prioritize Vitality, then Agility, unless a newly acquired weapon clearly changes the scaling you want to use.

Skills: Lumiere Assault, Overcharge, Powerful, Marking Shot, and Recovery From Fire.
Pictos and Luminas: prioritize Exposing Attack, SOS Shell, Rewarding Mark, Burning Shots, Critical Burn, Dodger, Dead Energy II, and Marking Shots.
How to play: open by applying Mark or another setup effect, then use Charge-generating actions before spending Charges on Gustave’s higher-impact attacks. He is a reliable character for learning the game’s timing systems because he can contribute even when the fight does not allow a long uninterrupted damage sequence. His value is greatest in Act 1 and early progression; later characters offer more specialized endgame synergies, so there is no need to force Gustave into a late-game tier list.

Weapon progression: use Trebuchim in Act 1, Kralim in Act 2, and Choralim in Act 3. Trebuchim can generate a random Stain from Free Aim shots. Kralim rewards changing spell elements and can recover AP when Lune uses a Stain. Choralim supports late-game multi-hit and critical-oriented play.
Attributes: follow the scaling of the equipped weapon. Early Lune benefits from a balance of survivability and damage. With Choralim in the late game, the cited direction is toward Agility and Defense, rather than assuming that one generic offensive attribute is always correct.

How to play: use Free Aim or Elemental Trick to establish the Stain you need, then spend it on an empowered spell. Thermal Transfer becomes especially useful when the party is already applying Burn. Do not follow one rigid rotation against every enemy: choose the element, Stain, and support action that best fit the target’s resistances and your party’s current AP.
Maelle build: Stance management and burst finishing
Role: primary burst damage, stance-based offense, and priority-target finishing.
Weapon and attributes: select Maelle’s weapon by its scaling and passive rather than by a generic attack ranking. Her attributes should support the weapon you are using and the Stance loop you intend to maintain. The important goal is to reach and exploit her high-damage Stances; raw offensive stats are less useful if the setup prevents you from reaching the correct state or leaves Maelle unable to act during the damage window.
Skills: build around skills that enter, exploit, or preserve Maelle’s strongest Stances. If you cannot reliably maintain the offensive timing, replace one damage skill with a defensive or utility option instead of treating the most aggressive list as mandatory.
Pictos and Luminas: prioritize AP generation, first-turn access, critical or high-damage effects, and enough defensive support to survive the setup turn. Late-game high-output options commonly include First Strike, First Offensive, Cheater, Painted Power, Glass Cannon, Inverted Affinity, Powerful or Greater Powerful effects, Energising effects, and parry-based sustain.
How to play: Maelle is the party’s damage-window character. Prepare her Stance and buffs, have Sciel or another ally create a favorable turn, and then use Maelle’s strongest finisher against the priority target. This is a burst strategy, not a guaranteed one-shot formula: enemy defenses, difficulty, weapon level, available Luminas, and the player’s defensive timing all affect the result.
Sciel build: Foretell, Twilight State, and team amplification
Role: support-damage hybrid, Foretell stacking, healing or AP support, and burst amplification.
Weapon progression: use Scieleson early, Rangeson in Act 2, and Charnon in Act 3. Scieleson supports Agility and Luck. Rangeson adds survivability and healing utility. Charnon is the late-game choice because it guarantees critical hits during Twilight State and makes Foretell-based burst more consistent.

Attributes: early builds can use Agility and Luck or add survivability according to the weapon. For the late-game Charnon setup, prioritize Luck and pair it with Defense.
Skills: early options are Focused Foretell, Marking Card, Spectral Sweep, Twilight Slash, Phantom Blade, and Sealed Fate. In Act 2, add Grim Harvest and Plentiful Harvest as appropriate. Act 3 recommendations include Twilight Dance, Sealed Fate, Final Path, Intervention, Fortune’s Fury, and Plentiful Harvest.
Late-game Pictos and Luminas: useful options include Immaculate, Glass Cannon, Inverted Affinity, Augmented Counter III, Auto Rush, Critical Burn, Teamwork, Roulette, Empowering Parry, Energy Master, Energising Parry, Energising Turn, Burn Affinity, Frenzy, First Life, First Strike, Tainted, Full Strength, Painted Power, Recovery, Cheater, Solidifying, Sweet Kill, Warming Up, Second Chance, AP Discount, Double Third, and Feint.
How to play: build Foretell with Focused Foretell or Marking Card, then use Twilight State and Charnon’s critical interaction when the window is ready. Save Fortune’s Fury or Intervention for the ally who can convert the next turn into the largest gain—usually Maelle during a burst setup, although Verso can be the better recipient when his rank and AP are already prepared.

Sciel is not merely a secondary attacker. In the Maelle, Sciel, and Verso party, her support actions are often what allow the other two characters to produce their best turns.
Verso build: rank escalation and high-output multi-hit attacks
Role: escalating personal damage, multi-hit attacks, break pressure, and flexible offense.
Weapon and attributes: Chevalam is the aggressive recommendation. Prioritize Agility, then Luck. This setup is intended to let Verso begin at a high rank and improve his speed and critical potential. A more defensive late-game weapon setup is also viable, so Chevalam should be treated as the high-output option rather than the only correct weapon.
Skills: Blitz, Phantom Stars, Follow Up, Paradigm Shift, Defiant Strike, and Ascending Assault. Phantom Stars is particularly valuable for a multi-hit damage plan, while Follow Up and rank-oriented actions help maintain momentum.
Pictos and Luminas: consider Augmented Counter I, Perilous Parry, Confident Fighter, Shell On Rush, First Strike, Powerful on Shell, Critical Burn, Energising Parry, Empowering Parry, Painted Power, Inverted Affinity, Cheater, Energy Master, Frenzy, First Life, AP Discount, and Double Third.
How to play: use the opening turns to climb or preserve rank, then convert that rank into stronger attacks. Verso rewards accurate attacks and defensive timing. Missed attacks, taking damage, or entering the damage phase without enough AP can sharply reduce the payoff of the aggressive build. If that happens frequently, remove one glass-cannon effect and add AP generation, Shell, or a parry-sustain option.
Monoco build: masks, break utility, and AP support
Role: flexible damage, break and shield utility, AP support, and enemy-specific adaptation.
Weapon progression: use Nusaro in Act 2 and Joyaro in Act 3. Nusaro combines Vitality and Agility scaling and rewards parrying or matching skills to the Almighty Wheel. Joyaro scales with Agility and Defense, starts Monoco in Almighty Mask, and rewards avoiding damage. Baguettaro is an alternative for Burn-oriented setups.

Maelle, Sciel, and Verso: the burst team
- Prepare the target: Sciel builds Foretell with Focused Foretell or Marking Card and positions the party for the next damage window.
- Prepare Maelle: use the actions needed to reach or preserve her best Stance instead of spending all AP immediately.
- Prepare Verso: build or maintain rank with accurate attacks, defensive timing, and Follow Up where appropriate.
- Create the window: use Twilight State and Sciel’s support tools when the party can take full advantage of the next turn.
- Spend the window: let Maelle use her strongest finisher and have Verso follow with his highest-value multi-hit attack.
This team is ideal when the player wants to delete priority targets quickly and is comfortable parrying, dodging, and preserving offensive momentum. It is less forgiving when the player misses defensive timings or lacks enough Lumina points for AP and survivability support.
Maelle, Sciel, and Monoco: the flexible team
Use the same Maelle-and-Sciel burst foundation, but let Monoco answer the encounter rather than forcing him into a pure damage role. Select a mask and skill set that addresses the problem currently preventing progress:

Lune and Sciel: elemental and status sequencing
Lune and Sciel work well together when you want to build toward a planned payoff rather than attack independently. Lune establishes Stains and elemental effects, including Burn where appropriate. Sciel builds Foretell and uses her support actions to amplify the turn when Lune or the third character can capitalize on it.
Add Maelle when the priority is burst finishing, or Monoco when the encounter demands break, shield bypass, healing, or flexible AP support. Elemental Trick can help Lune establish the sequence in the late game, but the correct order still depends on the enemy and the party’s available AP.
Late-game Pictos and Lumina priorities
The effects below are best understood as categories, not a single mandatory six-slot list.
| Priority | Examples | When to use them |
|---|---|---|
| Opening tempo | First Strike, First Offensive, Augmented First Strike, Auto Rush | When the party needs to establish Foretell, Stains, Mark, rank, or a Stance before the enemy acts. |
| AP economy | AP Discount, Double Third, Energising Turn, Energising Parry, Energy Master, Potier Energy | When your strongest turn is unavailable because the party cannot afford its skills consistently. |
| Raw damage | Painted Power, Full Strength, Powerful, Greater Powerful, Longer Powerful, Auto Powerful, Cheater, Frenzy, Sweet Kill | When the character can already reach the required state and survive long enough to use the damage. |
| Critical and Burn synergy | Critical Burn, Burn Affinity, Luck, Immaculate, Tainted | For Sciel, Lune, or a party that reliably applies Burn and can convert it into critical-oriented damage. |
| Parry and counter sustain | Empowering Parry, Energising Parry, Augmented Counter I, Augmented Counter III, Perilous Parry, Breaking Counter | When you can consistently land defensive timings and want parries to generate damage, AP, or break pressure. |
| Safety and recovery | SOS Shell, Recovery, Solidifying, First Life, Second Chance, Shell On Rush, Confident Fighter, Teamwork | When a glass-cannon setup is causing failed attempts, lost damage windows, or insufficient healing. |
| Specialized utility | Exposing Attack, Rewarding Mark, Marking Shots, Breaker, Staggering Attack, Feint, Warming Up, Inverted Affinity, Glass Cannon | When the encounter or character loop specifically benefits from Mark, break, delayed power, defensive risk, or a high-risk damage trade. |
Glass Cannon and Inverted Affinity should be treated as deliberate risk choices, not automatic upgrades. They are most appropriate when you understand the enemy’s attack patterns and can preserve the party’s offensive plan. If you are losing a character before the damage window, a defensive Lumina that produces a smaller but repeatable result is better than a theoretical maximum.
Troubleshooting common build problems
My character does not deal the damage shown in build lists
Check the weapon first. Confirm that your attributes match its scaling, that the relevant Picto has been mastered if you are using its Lumina version, and that the character is reaching the required state. Maelle needs the appropriate Stance, Sciel needs a Foretell and Twilight State plan, Verso needs rank and AP, Lune needs the right Stain, and Monoco may need the correct mask or Almighty Wheel progression.
I run out of AP before the important turn
Replace one damage effect with an AP option such as AP Discount, Double Third, Energising Turn, Energising Parry, or Energy Master. Sciel’s support actions and Monoco’s Potier Energy can also change the party’s AP economy. A slightly weaker attack that leaves enough AP for the actual damage window is usually more valuable than an ideal attack that cannot be afforded.
I cannot maintain a perfect-parry or glass-cannon setup
Do not copy the most demanding postgame configuration. Swap Glass Cannon, Inverted Affinity, or some counter effects for SOS Shell, Recovery, Solidifying, First Life, Second Chance, Confident Fighter, or other AP and healing support. Keep one or two offensive effects so the build still has a clear payoff, but make survival and resource consistency the priority until your defensive timing improves.
Break or shields are stopping my damage team
Use Monoco as the third member instead of Verso and select the appropriate mask and skills. Chevaliere Piercing addresses shields, while break-oriented options and effects such as Breaker, Breaking Counter, and Staggering Attack support encounters where break is the real damage gate. A flexible utility slot can produce more total damage than a second pure attacker who cannot get through the enemy’s defenses.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best team in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
For late-game burst, Maelle, Sciel, and Verso are the strongest general recommendation. For a more adaptable postgame team, use Maelle, Sciel, and Monoco. During Act 1, Gustave, Lune, and Maelle are the most practical progression core.
Should I use postgame weapons during the main story?
No. Postgame weapons and Lumina combinations may require content, levels, encounters, or point capacity that are not available during the campaign. Use the stage-labeled progression recommendations until you reach the relevant Act or postgame area.
Which attributes should I level?
Match attributes to the scaling of the weapon you have equipped. Examples include Vitality then Agility for the cited early Gustave setup, Agility then Luck for aggressive Chevalam Verso, Luck and Defense for late-game Charnon Sciel, and Agility and Defense for late-game Joyaro Monoco.
Are Glass Cannon and Inverted Affinity mandatory?
No. They are high-risk offensive choices. Use them when you can consistently avoid damage and execute the planned burst. If you are missing defensive timings, replace them with AP, healing, Shell, extra-life, or parry-sustain effects.
Is Gustave still one of the best endgame characters?
Gustave is especially useful in Act 1 and early progression because Mark and Charges provide a reliable introduction to setup-based combat. He is not a mandatory late-game pick, where Verso, Sciel, Monoco, Maelle, and Lune offer more specialized postgame synergies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best team in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
For late-game burst, Maelle, Sciel, and Verso are the best general recommendation. Sciel creates the Foretell and Twilight State damage window, Maelle delivers the main burst, and Verso adds rank-scaling multi-hit damage.
Can I use these postgame builds during the main story?
No. Postgame builds often require late-game weapons, rare Pictos, mastered Luminas, and update or postgame content. Use the Act 1 and Act 2 recommendations until those items become available.
Which attributes should I level?
Match your attributes to the scaling of your equipped weapon. For example, aggressive Chevalam Verso favors Agility and Luck, while late-game Charnon Sciel favors Luck and Defense.
Are Glass Cannon and Inverted Affinity mandatory?
No. Glass Cannon and Inverted Affinity are high-risk options for players who can maintain defensive timing. Replace them with Shell, AP, recovery, extra-life, or parry-sustain effects if you are struggling.
The Bottom Line
Use Maelle, Sciel, and Verso for the highest late-game burst, or replace Verso with Monoco when break, shields, and flexibility matter more. For the story, progress from Gustave, Lune, and Maelle in Act 1, reassess weapon scaling in Act 2, and specialize around Charnon, Choralim, Joyaro, Maelle’s Stances, and mastered Luminas in Act 3 and the postgame. The best build is the one whose resource loop you can execute consistently—not necessarily the one with the most aggressive list of effects.
