Best overall: the Verbatim 43888 is the most balanced portable choice for reading and writing modern Blu-ray media. It combines USB-C, UHD Blu-ray playback, 6x BD-R and BD-R DL writing, 4x BDXL writing, support for 100GB BDXL discs and M-DISC compatibility. Choose the ASUS BW-16D1X-U if you want a faster desktop unit with up to 16x BD-R writing and BDXL support to 128GB. The compact LG BP60NB10 is a simpler USB 2.0 option, but its older interface is slower for large transfers.
Those specifications describe optical-drive hardware, not a guaranteed PlayStation-game dumping solution. Sony’s protection system, disc formats and supported playback media determine what software can legally read. A USB Blu-ray drive may read sectors that a computer can access, yet still be unable to produce a usable archival image of a proprietary PS4 or PS5 game disc.

What you are actually buying
An external Blu-ray drive is an optical mechanism, USB bridge and enclosure. It can spin a disc, identify supported media and transfer sectors to a host computer. The drive’s label does not tell you whether a particular operating system application understands a PlayStation disc’s file system, applies the correct keys or creates a usable image.

Drive capability is not the same as PlayStation compatibility
Manufacturers publish support for physical media classes such as BD-ROM, BD-R, BD-RE and BDXL. PlayStation game discs can use proprietary layouts and protection that are outside those generic media descriptions. Therefore, a drive advertised as UHD-capable or BDXL-capable should be treated as necessary hardware for some discs, not proof that a PC can archive every PS4 or PS5 title.
Why protected discs are a separate problem
Sony describes AACS as a copyright-protection technology with a set of encryption keys on both the disc and the playback device. A generic external drive can report that a disc is present while authorized software still refuses to expose the game data in an archival form. The official material available for this comparison does not document an authorized PC workflow for decrypting proprietary PlayStation game discs. Do not assume that changing USB ports, installing a different player or buying a faster writer resolves that limitation.
Requirements for 66GB, 100GB and 128GB media
Capacity labels are easy to confuse because several Blu-ray categories overlap in everyday language.
| Media class | Nominal capacity discussed here | What the drive must advertise | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-layer Blu-ray | Typically called BD or BD-25 | BD-ROM/BD-R/BD-RE support | Suitable only when the source disc fits a single-layer Blu-ray capacity |
| Dual-layer Blu-ray | Typically called BD-50 | BD-R DL or BD-RE DL support | Provides roughly twice the data area of a single-layer disc |
| BDXL | 66GB, 100GB or 128GB classes | Explicit BDXL read/write support, with the required capacity listed | A standard Blu-ray-only drive may not recognize these larger discs |
| UHD Blu-ray | Commercial Ultra HD movie format, commonly using larger-capacity Blu-ray media | UHD Blu-ray playback support; BDXL support may still need to be checked separately | UHD playback branding does not automatically state every BDXL write capability |
For a 66GB or 100GB source, select a drive whose specification explicitly names BDXL and the relevant capacity. The ASUS model lists support up to 128GB, while the Verbatim 43888 and LG BP60NB10 list BDXL support up to 100GB. If your planned media is 128GB, the ASUS specification is the only one in this shortlist that explicitly reaches that size.

Interface, power and speed considerations
USB-C versus USB 3.2 Type-A
USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guaranteed transfer rate. The Verbatim’s USB-C connection is convenient for current laptops and tablets, but check whether your computer’s port supplies the expected USB data mode and bus power. The ASUS uses USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, so it fits older desktops and docks with that connector. A passive connector adapter changes the plug shape; it does not upgrade a USB 2.0 host to a faster standard.
USB 2.0 is usable but slower for large archives
The LG BP60NB10’s USB 2.0 interface can handle ordinary optical-drive operation, and LG publishes a 6x BD-ROM transfer rate. Large 66GB or 100GB reads can nevertheless take substantially longer when the host link, bridge chip or a hub limits throughput. Connect it directly to the computer rather than sharing a low-speed hub when copying a full disc.
Write-speed ratings are maxima
Verbatim publishes up to 6x for BD-R and BD-R DL and up to 4x for BDXL. ASUS publishes up to 16x BD-R writing. These are maximum media-and-drive ratings, not guaranteed sustained speeds. The actual rate depends on the disc’s certified speed, the selected writing mode, heat, USB throughput and whether the drive steps down to maintain a reliable burn. For archival work, a verified write is more important than the headline multiplier.
Portable versus desktop power
Slim portable drives reduce desk space and are convenient beside a laptop. A desktop enclosure is less convenient to travel with but generally gives you a sturdier installation and easier cable management. Follow the drive’s supplied power requirements; if a bus-powered unit repeatedly disconnects during a long read, remove hubs and docks before concluding that the optical mechanism is defective.

Drive-by-drive analysis
Verbatim 43888: the strongest all-round portable choice
The 43888 is the best fit when one drive must cover ordinary Blu-ray, UHD playback and larger BDXL media without becoming a desktop-only appliance. Its USB-C connection suits newer computers, while the published support for 100GB BDXL and M-DISC gives it useful headroom for archival media. The 6x BD-R/BD-R DL and 4x BDXL write ratings are adequate for deliberate archival burns, although they are not the fastest figures in this group.
Choose it when portability, modern connectivity and broad media support matter more than maximum throughput. Before purchase, confirm that the exact regional package includes the cables and playback software you need; bundled applications and availability can vary.
ASUS BW-16D1X-U: fastest published writer here
The BW-16D1X-U is the performance-oriented option. ASUS lists up to 16x BD-R writing and BDXL support up to 128GB, which makes it the logical choice for users handling many discs or planning to write 128GB BDXL media. Its USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A connection is straightforward on a desktop PC, but less convenient on a thin laptop that has only USB-C ports.
Its 16x figure should not be interpreted as a promise that every disc will burn at 16x. Media certification, verification settings and thermal conditions can reduce the negotiated speed. The advantage is that the drive has more published headroom when the media and host can use it.

LG BP60NB10: compact and uncomplicated
The BP60NB10 is appropriate when you need a small external reader/writer and do not expect the host connection to be fast. LG’s specification sheet lists a 6x BD-ROM transfer rate and BDXL support up to 100GB. That covers many large-disc scenarios on paper, but USB 2.0 is the clear trade-off for long transfers.
It is a sensible choice for occasional use, a secondary computer or a reader who values a compact enclosure over newer connectivity. It is less attractive for a large queue of 100GB reads or frequent image verification.
PlayStation media support and the PS5 boundary
Sony’s PS5 manual lists PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray, compatible PS4 Blu-ray, BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE among supported optical media. The same manual states that PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation-format software cannot be played from disc on PS5. PlayStation support also lists BD-R/RE XL as unsupported for PS4/PS5 media playback.
That playback information is important, but it does not establish a computer-archiving method. A PS5 console’s ability to play a particular disc and a PC application’s ability to read, authenticate and image that disc are different questions. In particular, do not infer that a console supporting a disc means a PC can decrypt it, or that a drive supporting BDXL means the console will play a BDXL copy.

Planning archival media
Use the right blank-disc class
If your goal is to make a second physical copy of data you are authorized to preserve, match the blank medium to the writer’s published support. Standard BD-R or BD-R DL is appropriate only when the data fits those layers. For larger sets, use BDXL media in the capacity your drive explicitly supports. A 128GB disc requires a drive and media combination rated for 128GB; a 100GB-rated drive should not be treated as 128GB-capable.
M-DISC is a media feature, not a decryption feature
The Verbatim 43888 is listed as M-DISC compatible. M-DISC refers to compatible archival media and writing support; it does not remove AACS or other protection from a PlayStation game disc, and it does not make a proprietary game image legally or technically readable.
Keep a second copy outside the optical disc
Optical media can be scratched, misplaced or unreadable in a future drive. Preserve disc metadata, hashes and any permitted image or extracted files on a separate storage system. An optical burn should be treated as one copy in a preservation plan, not the only copy.
A careful, lawful archival workflow
The following procedure helps you evaluate hardware and preserve information without assuming that protection can be bypassed.
- Identify the source. Record the platform, title, region marking, disc number, edition and visible capacity. Photograph the label and packaging so a later operator can distinguish revisions.
- Check the drive specification. Confirm BD-ROM reading, the required BD-R or BD-RE layer, and BDXL capacity if the disc is in the 66GB, 100GB or 128GB class. Confirm the host connector and power arrangement.
- Connect directly. Use the supplied cable and a direct computer port. Remove hubs, docks and adapters while diagnosing recognition or disconnect problems.
- Let the operating system identify the disc. Record the reported media type, capacity and volume information. A failure at this stage usually indicates a media, drive, cable or power issue rather than an application-format issue.
- Use only software and workflows you are authorized to use. If an application reports that the disc is protected or unsupported, do not treat a firmware change or an unknown decryption utility as a routine fix. The drive specification does not grant permission to defeat copy protection.
- Preserve metadata even when imaging is unavailable. Save photographs, label text, serial or catalogue information, console installation details and the computer’s detection log. This creates a useful catalogue without claiming that a protected game image was obtained.
- Verify any permitted copy. Compare a completed file or burn with a cryptographic hash and perform a read-back check. Keep the hash, date, drive model and media batch together with the archive record.
- Store independent copies. Keep one copy disconnected or in another location, and periodically test that the archive can still be read.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The drive is not detected
- Reconnect the USB cable directly to the computer.
- Try another USB port, avoiding an unpowered hub.
- Check whether the portable drive needs more power than the host port supplies.
- Test the cable and drive with a known-good ordinary Blu-ray disc.
The disc appears blank or has the wrong capacity
- Confirm that the drive advertises the disc’s layer and BDXL capacity.
- Clean the disc and inspect it for scratches or fingerprints.
- Test another disc from the same batch to separate media defects from drive limitations.
- Do not assume that a UHD label alone means 100GB or 128GB BDXL writing is supported.
A long transfer stops or slows dramatically
- Use the fastest supported direct USB connection.
- Keep the enclosure ventilated and avoid moving it while the disc spins.
- Check the disc’s certified write speed and permit the application to reduce speed for reliability.
- For a burn, enable verification rather than accepting a successful completion message without a read-back test.
A PlayStation disc is recognized but cannot be imaged
This symptom is consistent with the distinction between physical-drive support and proprietary protection. Record the disc information and the application’s exact error. A faster writer or BDXL media will not, by itself, establish an authorized method to decrypt the game data.
Which drive should you choose?
- Choose the Verbatim 43888 for the best portable balance of USB-C, UHD playback, 100GB BDXL and M-DISC support.
- Choose the ASUS BW-16D1X-U for a desktop workflow, frequent writing or explicit 128GB BDXL support and the highest published BD-R speed in this comparison.
- Choose the LG BP60NB10 when compact size and basic BDXL reading matter more than USB 3.x transfer speed.
Whichever model you select, treat the purchase as a way to access supported optical media—not as a promise that every PS4 or PS5 game disc can be dumped to a PC. Confirm the disc class, host connection and permitted software workflow before spending money on blank media or a faster enclosure.
