Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most PC and console owners, the 2TB or 4TB Samsung T7 Shield is the safest all-around external SSD for a large-game archive. Its USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface is rated for up to 1,050MB/s sequential reads and 1,000MB/s sequential writes, and Samsung specifies compliance with official USB power requirements. In an independent GamesRadar+ test, moving a 53.73GB game to a T7 Shield took 4 minutes 30 seconds.
Choose a Crucial X10 Pro or WD_BLACK P40 instead when your computer has a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps) port and you regularly move very large installs. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the console’s storage rules matter more than the fastest advertised SSD: PS5 games must be copied back to internal storage before playing, and Xbox Series X|S optimized games need an official expansion card for direct play.

2TB: the practical starting point
Two terabytes is a sensible floor for one or two exceptionally large games alongside several smaller titles. The capacity printed on the box is decimal; the usable figure shown by your operating system or console will be lower after formatting and file-system overhead. Keep a meaningful amount free rather than filling the drive to its last gigabyte, because a nearly full SSD can have less room for updates and housekeeping.
4TB: the easier long-term archive
Choose 4TB when the drive will hold a wider PC or console collection, multiple versions of the same game, or backups of games that you do not want to redownload. It also reduces the need to rotate drives when a large release arrives. Capacity above 4TB can make sense for a multi-user PC archive, but the value depends on the price in your region and whether your platform can use the space.
Capacity is not the same as playable space
On a PS5, an external drive can store PS5 game data but cannot run those games directly. Space on the USB drive is therefore an archive and transfer buffer, not an additional pool of immediately playable PS5 capacity. Xbox Series X|S has a similar distinction for optimized current-generation games. Account for the internal or expansion storage you actually use to play.

PlayStation 5
Sony’s support guidance requires PS5 games on USB extended storage to be copied back to the PS5 console storage before play. Sony also states that PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. Compatible internal M.2 SSD storage can run both PS5 and PS4 games directly.
For a PS5 USB drive, Sony lists SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster, a minimum capacity of 250GB and a maximum of 8TB. A drive in the 10Gbps class is therefore a practical match; a 20Gbps model may transfer data faster on a compatible computer but cannot change the PS5’s play-from-USB rule.

Xbox Series X and Series S
Western Digital’s compatibility information identifies the WD_BLACK P40 as able to play and store Xbox One games and archive Xbox Series X|S optimized games. Current-generation optimized titles require an official expansion card for direct play, as explained by TechSpot. An external SSD remains valuable for storing those games and for playing compatible Xbox One titles, but it is not a replacement for the expansion card.
PC
A PC can normally run a game library from an external SSD when the launcher and game support an external install location. Performance depends on the computer’s USB controller, the cable, the drive’s sustained behavior and the game’s own loading pattern. A 20Gbps SSD connected to a 5Gbps or 10Gbps port will operate at the slower link speed.
Samsung T7 Shield: the safest all-around choice
The T7 Shield is the default recommendation when one drive must serve several devices. Samsung rates it for up to 1,050MB/s sequential read and 1,000MB/s sequential write over USB 3.2 Gen 2, and specifies that it follows official USB power requirements. The 2TB and 4TB capacities fit the two most useful planning tiers for a large game archive.
Why it works well for game storage
- The 10Gbps interface is supported by many modern PCs and is a realistic match for console USB ports.
- Its ruggedized design is better suited to being carried between a desk, console and travel bag than a bare internal drive in an enclosure.
- It avoids the compatibility gamble of buying a 20Gbps drive for a computer that exposes only 10Gbps USB.
In GamesRadar+’s reported test, a 53.73GB game took 4 minutes 30 seconds to move to a T7 Shield. That is a real-world transfer result, not a promise that every title, cable or computer will achieve the same time; many small files, source-drive limits and background activity can reduce throughput.
Who should buy it
Select the T7 Shield if you want one portable archive for a PS5, Xbox, laptop and desktop, or if you have not verified that your PC has a 20Gbps USB port. It is also the sensible choice when reliability and broad compatibility matter more than shaving minutes from occasional transfers.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Crucial X10 Pro: for a 20Gbps PC
The Crucial X10 Pro is aimed at computers with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. The cited buying guide lists up to 2,100MB/s read and 2,000MB/s write. Those rates are possible only when the host controller, port, cable and drive are all operating at 20Gbps; connecting it to a slower port makes it a slower, often more expensive version of a 10Gbps drive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the extra speed matters
- You frequently copy 50GB-plus game folders between a fast internal NVMe SSD and the external drive.
- Your desktop or laptop documentation explicitly lists USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 (20Gbps), not merely USB-C.
- You are willing to use the supplied or a certified cable that supports the required data rate.
When it is unnecessary
If the external drive will remain attached to a PS5 or Xbox, the console’s interface and game-storage rules dominate. The X10 Pro cannot make PS5 games playable from USB, and it cannot replace the Xbox Series expansion card. For a mixed-device household without a verified 20Gbps PC, the T7 Shield is usually the lower-risk purchase.
WD_BLACK P40: a gaming-focused 20Gbps option
Western Digital lists the WD_BLACK P40 at up to 2,000MB/s read. It is a 20Gbps-class drive, so the same host-port and cable qualification applies as with the X10 Pro. Its gaming branding and explicit console compatibility notes make it useful for owners who want one drive for PC transfers and console archives.
PlayStation use
The P40 can serve as USB extended storage for PS4 games and as a holding place for PS5 games that you move back to the console’s internal storage when you are ready to play. The drive’s speed does not alter those Sony rules.
Xbox use
Western Digital’s table lists Xbox One games as playable and storable from the P40, while Xbox Series X|S optimized games can be archived. Direct play for optimized titles still requires the official expansion card. Use the P40 when moving games in and out of that card or internal storage is more important than running every title from the external drive.

SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5: a portable 1,000MB/s-class alternative
The SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for PS5 is documented for PS5 transfers and direct play from a PC game library. Its 1,000MB/s-class performance puts it in the same broad transfer category as other USB 3.2 Gen 2 portable drives. It is a reasonable option when you want a compact drive that travels between a PS5 and a gaming PC.
Use it as PS5 extended storage only after checking Sony’s capacity and formatting requirements. As with every USB SSD, the label’s speed is subordinate to the console or computer port connected at the other end.
Interface speed, cables and sustained transfers
Understand the link rates
| USB connection | Nominal link rate | What it means for these drives |
|---|---|---|
| USB 3.2 Gen 1 | 5Gbps | Works for storage, but limits a 10Gbps or 20Gbps SSD below its advertised ceiling |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2 | 10Gbps | The interface class used by the T7 Shield and many console ports |
| USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 | 20Gbps | Required to approach the X10 Pro and P40 headline rates |
| USB4 or Thunderbolt | Varies by implementation | Can be fast, but the drive and cable must support the same mode; a USB 3.x SSD does not gain USB4 speed automatically |
Use the right cable
USB-C describes the connector shape, not the data rate. A USB-C cable can be limited to USB 2.0, 5Gbps or 10Gbps. To reach a 20Gbps specification, use a cable rated for USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and connect directly to a matching host port. Hubs, front-panel adapters and monitors can negotiate a slower mode or add another bottleneck.
Why sustained speed falls below the headline
Sequential read and write figures come from controlled manufacturer tests. A game copy may contain thousands of files, may be read from a slower source drive and may trigger antivirus scanning or launcher verification. Cache exhaustion can also reduce a long write. Compare drives using the same source, destination, cable and port rather than assuming a 2,000MB/s label will halve every transfer time.
How to set up an external SSD for each platform
PS5
- Connect the SSD directly to a SuperSpeed USB port on the PS5; avoid an unpowered hub.
- Open Settings > Storage > USB Extended Storage and choose the connected drive.
- Format it as USB extended storage when prompted. Formatting erases existing data, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Move PS5 Games, select titles to archive on the USB drive. Use the corresponding PS4-game option when you want PS4 titles to remain playable from USB.
- Before unplugging, open the control center, choose Accessories, select the USB drive and choose Stop Using Extended Storage.
Xbox Series X|S
- Connect the SSD to a USB 3.x port and allow the console to detect it.
- Choose Use for games and apps when Xbox asks how to configure the drive; formatting removes existing files.
- Set it as the default installation location if you want new compatible games to land there, or move titles manually from My games & apps > Manage > Move or copy.
- Keep Xbox Series X|S optimized titles on the external SSD as an archive unless the console offers a direct-play exception; move them to internal storage or the official expansion card to play.
- Use the console’s storage-management command before disconnecting rather than pulling the cable during a transfer.
Windows PC
- Connect the SSD directly to the fastest USB port identified in your motherboard or laptop documentation.
- Open Disk Management if Windows does not show the drive, initialize it if required, create a volume and format it with a file system supported by your game launcher.
- In Steam, open Settings > Storage, add a library location on the external SSD and choose that library when installing or moving a game.
- For other launchers, change the install directory in the launcher’s settings before downloading; moving a folder without using the launcher can force a reinstallation or file verification.
- Eject the drive from the Windows notification area before disconnecting. Keep the computer awake until a large copy completes.
Buying checklist
- Capacity: choose 2TB for a focused library and 4TB for a broad archive, leaving room for patches.
- Host port: match 10Gbps drives to USB 3.2 Gen 2 systems; buy a 20Gbps model only when your computer explicitly supports Gen 2×2.
- Platform rule: confirm whether the games must be copied back to internal storage before play.
- Cable: verify the cable’s data rating, not just its USB-C connector.
- Portability: a drive carried between locations benefits from a ruggedized enclosure and a short, replaceable cable.
- Sustained behavior: read independent transfer tests as examples under stated conditions, not universal guarantees.
- Warranty and support: check the current regional terms before purchase; warranty length was not stated consistently in the product information summarized here.
Common problems and fixes
The drive is detected but too slow
Check the negotiated USB speed in your operating system, replace the cable, bypass a hub and try a rear motherboard port. A 20Gbps SSD on a 10Gbps or 5Gbps connection is working normally at the lower rate.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
PS5 refuses the drive
Confirm that the capacity is between 250GB and 8TB, connect to a SuperSpeed USB port, install current system software and reformat the drive as USB extended storage. Reformatting deletes its contents.
A PS5 game will not launch from USB
This is expected for PS5 titles. Move the game to PS5 console storage or compatible internal M.2 storage, and keep the USB drive for archiving. PS4 games are the exception and can run directly from USB extended storage.
An Xbox Series game shows a move prompt
Optimized Series X|S games generally need internal storage or the official expansion card for play. Leave the title on the external SSD when you want to save bandwidth, then move it when you are ready to play.
Windows asks to format a drive that contains games
Cancel the prompt. A different USB port, cable or drive letter may be preventing Windows from mounting the existing volume. Formatting before checking the disk can erase the library.
Bottom line for a GTA 6-ready library
Buy a 2TB or 4TB Samsung T7 Shield unless you have a confirmed 20Gbps PC and a clear need for faster bulk transfers. Choose the Crucial X10 Pro or WD_BLACK P40 for that specific 20Gbps workload, and consider the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for a compact PS5-and-PC setup. No external USB SSD can bypass the PS5 rule for playing PS5 games or the Xbox Series requirement for an official expansion card, so reserve internal or expansion capacity for the titles you intend to play immediately.
