Start with the weapon style you enjoy, decide whether you want to use Power Armor, and choose whether damage or survivability matters more. For general play, pick an archetype that fits those preferences; for The Gleaming Depths, treat your build as part of a coordinated endgame team plan.
How to choose a Fallout 76 build
A build is a configuration of points across the seven S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes and the Perk Cards you select. Together, they shape how your character fights and survives. Use archetypes as starting points, not as a universal ranking: the community directory groups builds by weapon family and style, but does not provide standardized damage, survival, or completion-time tests.

- Choose a weapon family. Decide whether you prefer automatic rifles, non-automatic rifles, heavy weapons, melee, shotguns, or pistols.
- Decide how you want to stay alive. Consider whether you want Power Armor, regular armor, stealth, or a more durable approach.
- Name the activity. A build for everyday exploration and combat is not automatically the right setup for a coordinated endgame raid.
- Check the build’s date and perks. Fallout 76 has received combat, perk, and armor changes; use current notes to check recommendations before copying an older loadout.
FalloutBuilds’ build directory lets readers browse archetypes, attribute and perk filters, and guide dates. It is a community resource rather than an official balance ranking.

Which archetype fits your playstyle?
| Archetype | Weapon and style | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Commando | Automatic rifles | A natural starting point if you want an automatic-rifle build. FalloutBuilds calls commando probably its most played archetype, but gives no underlying data, so treat that as the directory’s characterization rather than a measured popularity claim. |
| Rifleman | Non-automatic rifles, often sniper-style | Consider it if you prefer a non-automatic rifle and a more deliberate shooting style. |
| Heavy gunner | Heavy weapons, commonly with Power Armor | Check current heavy-weapon perk recommendations against Bethesda’s combat and perk changes before using an older guide. |
| Melee | Unarmed, one-handed, or two-handed weapons | Choose the specific melee approach you want to build around; the directory represents all three. |
| Shotgunner | Shotguns | The directory spans tanky to stealthy approaches, so identify which defensive or stealth style you want rather than assuming one fixed shotgun build. |
| Pistol | Automatic or non-automatic pistols, often stealth-oriented | Decide which pistol type and combat approach you want before selecting perks. |
These descriptions are broad community archetypes, not results from controlled comparisons. Nuka Knights’ build index also lists community guides across topics such as archer, ghoul, commando, heavy weapons, and raid-oriented builds; its visible entries include updates from March and April 2026. Check an individual guide’s date before treating it as current.

- Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4, welcome you to Fallout 76, the online prequel where every surviving human is a real person. Work together, or not, to survive. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, you’ll experience the largest, most dynamic world ever created in the legendary Fallout universe
- Reclamation Day, 2102. Twenty-five years after the bombs fall, you and your fellow Vault Dwellers—chosen from the nation’s best and brightest – emerge into post-nuclear America. Play solo or join together as you explore, quest, build, and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats
Why current patch notes matter
Bethesda’s C.A.M.P. Revamp Release Notes describe ongoing combat rebalancing. The notes say Heavy Gunner perks were replaced with perks focused on gaining bonuses by spending ammunition, alongside a weapon spin-up perk; they also describe improvements to manual aiming and V.A.T.S. That makes older heavy-weapon perk advice especially worth checking against the live game.
Bethesda’s The Backwoods Release Notes, dated March 3, 2026, describe armor balancing, including reduced armor weight and additional resistances on armor. Defensive recommendations can therefore age too. Check the official notes and the game’s current perk descriptions rather than assuming an older armor or perk setup is unchanged.

When you need a raid build instead of a general build
The Gleaming Depths is a distinct, coordinated endgame activity—not a test that every general-use build should be expected to pass alone. Bethesda describes it as designed for a party of four highly leveled and geared players, with teamwork, unique roles, and encounters where some builds may have an advantage. As Bethesda puts it in its official release notes: “The Gleaming Depths is a new endgame activity designed to be faced by a party of four highly leveled and geared players.”

For raid preparation, coordinate with your group about roles and encounter needs, then choose and verify a build for that plan. The available sources do not establish a single raid loadout that is best for every team or encounter, so a solo-oriented general build should not be assumed to be optimal there.

- Hydro Tech Exo Power Armor: Deep water power armor or interesting way to catch fish by hand? This Power Armor is probably not best used for that.
- Appalachian Contessa Prefab: Place the Appalachian Contessa in your C.A.M.P. and be the captain of your own ship.
- Live Bait Barrel: Have a fresh selection of fishing bait available in your C.A.M.P. to help you catch some fish.
- Floating Bouy Set: For those who likes to flot things around, even in radiated water
- Charmcaster Fishing Rod: For those who said fising is a boring hobey
What the available comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
The archetypes help narrow a choice by weapon family and broad playstyle. They do not establish which build deals the most damage, survives longest, or clears an activity fastest. No comparable performance tests or measured popularity statistics are provided by the sources used here. Choose based on your weapon preference and intended activity, and treat community guide labels as guidance rather than proof of superiority.
