Marathon Is Already Out: What Bungie’s New Extraction Shooter Is—and What’s Next

Bungie’s Marathon launched on March 5, 2026, for Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with cross-play and cross-save. It is a new game in the Marathon universe—not a Destiny sequel, remake, or direct continuation of the original Marathon trilogy.

What is Marathon?

Bungie describes Marathon as a sci-fi PvP extraction shooter set on Tau Ceti IV. Players take the role of Runners: cybernetic mercenaries who enter persistent zones alone or in crews, gather valuable resources, and try to get out alive. Its play centers on high-risk encounters with both other players and environmental threats.

Bungie’s September 2026 update described the launched game as a “cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience.” That framing matters: the original core loop puts player-versus-player danger alongside the world’s other threats. Bungie says it wants to preserve that identity while making the setting accessible through additional, lower-pressure activities.

Is Marathon a sequel to Destiny or the original Marathon trilogy?

No. Marathon is a Bungie project that arrived after Destiny, but it is not part of the Destiny franchise. It is set in the fictional world of Bungie’s original Marathon trilogy, yet Bungie says the new game is neither a remake nor a direct sequel to those older games. Players do not need to treat it as a continuation of Destiny’s story.

How did Marathon get from reveal to launch?

April 12, 2025: gameplay reveal

Bungie’s first gameplay showcase introduced Runners, gunplay, and solo and crew play. At the time, the studio set September 23, 2025 as the release date and announced a closed alpha for April 23 through May 4. Those dates were part of the original plan, not the final release schedule.

June 17, 2025: release delayed

After the reveal and alpha feedback, Bungie said it needed more development time and delayed the planned September launch. The studio identified survival under pressure, mystery and lore, raid-like endgame challenges, and its first-person-shooter combat as priorities. It also said it would work on more engaging AI, more rewarding runs and dynamic events, narrative and environmental storytelling, solo and duo play, and proximity chat. The June development update explains the changes Bungie wanted to pursue.

What does Bungie plan to change next?

In its September 24, 2026 update, Bungie outlined development plans stretching through March 2027. The stated direction is to connect permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences and make the world easier to enter, while adding deeper Runner shell progression, focused questlines and narrative, alien enemies, and a new zone. These are announced plans, not confirmation that every feature has shipped.
