Vortex and Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) are the two leading choices supported by the available documentation, but neither is a universal winner. Choose Vortex for a Nexus-centered, guided workflow; choose MO2 if managing separate game instances and profiles is a priority. Before installing anything, confirm that your chosen manager and each mod support your specific Fallout game and edition.
Which Fallout mod manager should you use?
Start with the workflow you want, then check compatibility for the exact game. Nexus Mods describes Vortex as supporting Fallout games and integrating with the site to find and install mods. MO2’s listing describes Nexus integration and managing multiple game instances. Those published capabilities make Vortex a natural starting point for a Nexus-focused setup and MO2 a reasonable fit for players who want to organize distinct instances.
This is a feature-based distinction, not the result of a head-to-head test. The available documentation does not establish a complete, current compatibility matrix across Fallout titles, editions, storefronts, and operating systems. Check the manager’s current documentation and the mod’s requirements before setting up.

Choose Vortex for a Nexus-centered workflow
If you expect to discover, download, and install mods through Nexus Mods and prefer a guided workflow, try Vortex. Its Nexus listing describes support for Fallout games and site integration; verify the specific title and edition you play rather than assuming every combination is covered.

Choose MO2 if separate instances matter
If you want to manage multiple game instances, MO2’s published feature description makes it a relevant option. Its documentation explicitly names Fallout 4, but that alone does not confirm compatibility with every Fallout game, edition, or setup.
Let the game-specific guide break a tie
Many mod setups depend on a guide tailored to a particular Fallout game and edition. Find a current guide that matches your setup, then use its manager and instructions consistently. Switching workflows mid-setup can make it harder to tell which tool controls a mod or where a change came from.

What happens when Vortex deploys or removes a mod?
According to the Vortex project wiki, deployment creates hard links between Vortex’s mod install path and the game’s active files. Purging removes those links. This describes Vortex-managed deployment; it is not proof that purging will remove files installed manually or otherwise changed outside the manager.
Does uninstalling a mod remove every file?
Do not assume that it does. Manager cleanup applies to what the manager controls; manual installs and unmanaged changes may be left behind. Bethesda Support recommends a clean install to ensure complete removal of third-party Fallout 4 mods. Is Nexus Mod Manager still the default choice?
No. Nexus Mods says the older manager’s foundations had become difficult to extend as desired features and standards changed. For a current setup, evaluate Vortex and MO2 using their current documentation rather than treating Nexus Mod Manager as the default: Nexus Mods FAQ.
