Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are officially listed for Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar labels the PS5 version “Plays Best On,” giving buyers a reason to favor PlayStation if its advertised features matter to them—but that wording is not a published head-to-head performance test. If you already own one of the supported console families, the available official information does not make a strong case for buying the other one just for GTA 6.
Will GTA 6 be on PS5 and Xbox Series X?
Yes. Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on the official GTA VI page. Its current page gives a release date of November 19, 2026, and marks PS5 “Plays Best On.” The supported Xbox family includes Series X and Series S; the official platform listing does not name Xbox One or PS4.
PlayStation’s US product page also lists November 19, 2026 for PS5 and says the game is not playable on PS4: PlayStation GTA VI.
Does GTA 6 play better on PS5?
Rockstar’s “Plays Best On PlayStation 5” label is an official platform preference, not evidence of a measured frame-rate, resolution, or image-quality advantage over Xbox. The official materials cited here do not publish a direct PS5-versus-Xbox benchmark, so claims that one version runs at a particular frame rate or has better graphics are not established.

Mary Yee, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, said GTA VI would “play best on PS5” by using its immersive features. That statement describes Sony’s position and its partnership with Rockstar; it is not independent comparative testing. See the PlayStation Blog announcement.
What PS5-specific features does PlayStation describe?
PlayStation says the PS5 version uses DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers, effects through the controller speaker, Tempest 3D AudioTech, and the PS5 SSD. These may be meaningful if you want those particular features, but they do not establish that Xbox lacks comparable capabilities or that PS5 has better overall performance.

PlayStation’s product page describes the features in more detail: GTA VI for PS5. A DualSense controller is the relevant way to experience the described controller features; the cited information does not suggest that an additional controller is required.
PS5 vs Xbox Series X for GTA 6: how to choose

If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series console, the evidence here gives no compelling GTA VI-specific reason to switch families. For a first console, weigh the games and friends you already have access to, controller preference, local hardware price and availability, and whether PS5’s stated features matter to you. Console prices and stock change by market and date; check current local listings rather than relying on old price comparisons.

How much does GTA 6 cost, and when can you preload it?
Take-Two and Rockstar announced US prices of $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition on June 24, 2026. Their announcement says digital preload begins November 12, 2026. PlayStation’s US product page displayed the same edition prices when accessed October 3, 2026; prices may change and do not establish costs in other countries. Buying a physical copy? It is a download code, not a disc
Rockstar Support says the physical GTA VI package contains a download code and no disc. Take-Two and Rockstar said this code-in-box version was expected to be available from November 12, 2026, to support preloading. If you want a disc-based game, this announced physical package does not meet that expectation. Details are on Rockstar Support’s platforms, editions, and versions page.

Rockstar Support also says PlayStation redemption codes are region-specific and recommends buying from a retailer in the country associated with your platform account. It says Xbox codes are not region-locked. Check the territory and listing before purchasing, particularly if buying a PlayStation code from another country. If you already have a supported console, keep the one you own unless other games, friends, or platform preferences give you a separate reason to change. If you are buying your first console, PS5 has the clearest official nudge from Rockstar and the specifically described DualSense and audio features; Xbox Series X remains an officially supported option. Choose based on those preferences and the current local console deal—not on an unverified promise of better frame rate or graphics on either system.
