The best farming mod depends on what you want to change: Farmer’s Delight is a strong starting point for farming and cooking, while Croptopia broadens the ingredient list, Mystical Agriculture turns crops into a resource system, and AgriCraft adds crop breeding. For village fieldwork, try Smarter Farmers. There is no universal winner: first match a mod to your play style, then check that its current files support your Minecraft version and loader.

This shortlist is based on the mods’ described features, not comparative stability or performance testing. Choose the kind of farming you want before installing: cooking and meals, more ingredients, resource progression, villager help, or crop experimentation.

Which mod should you choose?
For cooking alongside farming: Farmer’s Delight
Farmer’s Delight is the broadest starting point if you want farming to lead into meal preparation rather than simply adding more plants. Its project description says it “gently expands upon farming and cooking in Minecraft,” with cooking blocks and recipes for food such as sandwiches, salads, stews, desserts, and feasts. It also describes soil improvements, utility tools, and decorative blocks. See the Farmer’s Delight project page for current files.

Choose Croptopia if the main goal is a broader ingredient catalog and more food crafting. The CurseForge Blog’s 2026 roundup reports 58 crops, 26 fruit trees, and more than 250 foods. The roundup says its optional guidebook requires Patchouli; the project listing also names dependencies, so verify the exact file’s requirements before adding it to a pack.
For turning farms into resource production: Mystical Agriculture
Mystical Agriculture makes crops part of resource progression: grow resources such as dirt, redstone, and leather, then use the resulting essences in crafting. It fits players who want fields to support broader advancement, rather than primarily adding conventional foods.

Check version, loader, and dependencies before installing
A mod name alone does not tell you whether a particular download works with your setup. Compatibility varies by Minecraft version, mod loader, and file release. Compare the game version and loader on the exact file you intend to use, then confirm that any required libraries or companion mods match as well.
Farmer’s Delight illustrates why the file listing matters: its CurseForge page lists a NeoForge release for Minecraft 1.21.1 dated August 29, 2026, and identifies 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 among the versions currently being updated. Its Modrinth listing shows Forge and NeoForge support for several versions, including 1.21–1.21.1 and 1.20–1.20.1. These listings can differ by release channel and change over time, so use the file page for your exact version and loader rather than assuming support from a project summary.

- Open the mod’s project page and select its files or versions list.
- Find a file matching your Minecraft version and loader, such as Forge or NeoForge; do not assume one loader’s file works with another.
- Read that file’s dependency details and install the required matching libraries or companion mods.
- Check any relevant configuration. For Smarter Farmers, confirm
mobGriefingis true; for AgriCraft’s seasonal features, verify the season mod is compatible. - Install only files made for the same game setup, then test the world with the intended mods enabled.
Be careful with Pam’s HarvestCraft naming
The classic Pam’s HarvestCraft project on Modrinth lists Java Edition 1.12.2 and Forge, and says HarvestCraft 1 will not update past 1.12.2. It points to separate HarvestCraft 2 modules for later game versions. The 96-crop figure in the CurseForge roundup refers specifically to Pam’s HarvestCraft 2 – Crops, not to the classic project as a modern-version release. Check the chosen module’s own listing for its supported version and dependencies.
Optional vanilla farming reference
If you are new to farming in unmodded Minecraft, Penguin Random House lists Minecraft: Guide to Farming, an 80-page hardcover by Mojang AB and The Official Minecraft Team, published October 9, 2018 (ISBN 9781101966426). The publisher says it covers crop farming, animal breeding, and hostile mob and block farming. It is a vanilla farming reference, not a guide to current mod compatibility or installation.
