What makes Boltgun a useful starting point?
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a 2023 first-person shooter from Auroch Digital and Focus Entertainment. It combines a Space Marine arsenal with a deliberately 1990s-inspired pixel presentation, and its Steam tags include Boomer Shooter and Fast-Paced. That combination establishes the qualities this list prioritizes: immediate gunplay, aggressive forward momentum, readable enemy encounters, and a retro visual language rather than modern military realism.
The recommendations below are not all trying to copy its Warhammer 40,000 setting. Instead, they preserve one or more parts of the experience while changing the emphasis. Some make movement itself a technical skill; others offer a more conventional run-and-gun campaign, replace firearms with magic, or turn every encounter into a horror set piece. Boltgun had a 90% positive rating from 11,348 English-language Steam reviews in a snapshot crawled in 2026; the other figures in this article are similarly dated storefront snapshots, not permanent market statistics.

1. ULTRAKILL — the best choice for movement, style and mastery
Why it fits after Boltgun
ULTRAKILL is the closest recommendation when you want Boltgun’s aggression pushed into a more technical, score-driven direction. Its Steam description calls it a fast-paced, ultraviolent old-school FPS that combines classic shooters, modern Doom and character-action games. The result is combat built around doing several things at once: staying mobile, switching weapons, managing blood-based healing, and maintaining a stylish attack rhythm.
That healing rule changes how you read a fight. Rather than treating health as a resource you protect from a distance, the game rewards getting close enough to keep the action moving. Weapon variation and combo systems give repeated encounters a performance dimension, while ranks, secrets and optional challenges provide reasons to replay levels after you have reached the end.
Choose it if
- You want one of the fastest boomer shooters and are happy to learn movement and weapon interactions as skills.
- You enjoy improving a score or rank after finishing a level rather than stopping at the first clear.
- You want retro-FPS foundations with a stronger character-action influence.
What changes from Boltgun
The emphasis is less on inhabiting a heavily armed Space Marine and more on expressing mastery through movement, timing and stylish combinations. It is therefore a better follow-up for players who found Boltgun’s speed exciting but wanted more mechanical depth and replayable optimization.

2. Turbo Overkill — the best choice for maximal mobility and weapon spectacle
Why it fits after Boltgun
Turbo Overkill takes the fast-FPS premise and adds an unusually broad movement toolkit. Its cyberpunk arsenal includes more than 15 weapons, while traversal systems include wall-running, dashing, grappling hooks, flying-car movement and a slow-motion mode called Turbo Time. A chainsaw leg gives the game an immediately recognizable close-range identity.
The game explicitly presents itself as influenced by Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem 3D, so the retro lineage is clear even as the movement becomes more elaborate. Two dozen stages, secrets and arena challenges make exploration and combat practice part of the package rather than distractions from a linear campaign.

Choose it if
- You want to move through arenas in several dimensions instead of relying mainly on strafing and circle-strafing.
- You prefer a large collection of weapons and abilities with visibly different uses.
- You want a campaign with secrets and dedicated arenas to revisit after the main route.
What changes from Boltgun
Turbo Overkill is more traversal-heavy and more openly spectacular. Its cyberpunk setting replaces Boltgun’s science-fantasy warzone, and its mobility powers ask you to think about routes through a space as much as targets inside it.
3. Prodeus — the best choice for a direct classic-FPS campaign
Why it fits after Boltgun
Prodeus is the cleanest recommendation when what you really want is another focused run-and-gun campaign. It describes itself as an old first-person shooter re-imagined with modern rendering while preserving retro aesthetics and gameplay shaped by older hardware limits. Its Boomer Shooter and Fast-Paced tags align directly with Boltgun’s basic appeal.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchCompared with ULTRAKILL and Turbo Overkill, Prodeus is the more conventional choice. It does not make a specialized movement system or score loop the main attraction; instead, its appeal is the reliable rhythm of navigating a level, finding routes and secrets, and using a familiar arsenal against aggressive enemies.
Choose it if
- You want the most straightforward transition from Boltgun’s retro run-and-gun structure.
- You prefer a traditional campaign before experimenting with more technical movement games.
- You want multiplayer and creation tools in addition to the single-player campaign.
Extra modes
Prodeus supports online player-versus-player, online co-op and a level editor. Those additions make it the most flexible recommendation here if you want to keep playing after the main campaign or build and share your own stages.
4. AMID EVIL — the best choice for fantasy weapons and surreal atmosphere
Why it fits after Boltgun
AMID EVIL keeps the retro-FPS structure but replaces military firearms with sacred and magical weapons. It is set in a dark-fantasy world and is tagged on Steam as Boomer Shooter, Old School, Arena Shooter, Magic, Psychedelic and Dark Fantasy.
Rank #3
- 8 plastic miniatures for Warhammer 40,000
- Add an aggressive Speedwaaagh! to your Orks army
- Start a new army, or expand an existing collection, and save money compared to buying the kits individually
- Models supplied unassembled and unpainted
That change in arsenal matters more than the visual palette. Boltgun’s weapons sell the fantasy of being an overpowered soldier; AMID EVIL’s weapons make each encounter feel like a confrontation with an occult force. The pacing remains aggressive, but the surrounding mood is stranger and more dreamlike than a military science-fantasy campaign.

- You want the movement and arena logic of a boomer shooter without another collection of conventional guns.
- You prefer dark fantasy, psychedelia and supernatural environments to cyberpunk or industrial horror.
- You enjoy learning how a themed magical arsenal changes your approach to enemy groups.
What changes from Boltgun
The setting and weapon language are the main departures. AMID EVIL is a strong answer to “What games are like Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun?” when the desired similarity is relentless combat rather than the science-fiction setting.
5. CULTIC — the best choice for cult horror, dodging and explosive improvisation
Why it fits after Boltgun
CULTIC begins with the player crawling out of a grave and immediately fighting through a twisted cult. Its official description emphasizes shooting, sliding, blasting, ducking and dodging, with physics-heavy gib effects adding weight to every close-range exchange. The Steam tags identify it as a Boomer Shooter, Horror, Lovecraftian and PvE game.
The distinctive addition is dynamite. Explosives create a more improvised combat vocabulary than simply cycling through guns: you can combine movement, gunfire and thrown destruction while using the environment and enemy reactions to survive. The presentation is more grounded and horror-oriented than Boltgun, but the core demand remains active positioning rather than cautious cover shooting.
Choose it if
- You want a conventional campaign structure with a darker, more unsettling setting.
- You like sliding and dodging as much as raw running speed.
- You want explosives and physics to make encounters feel less predictable.
What changes from Boltgun
CULTIC trades the grand scale of a Space Marine war for a personal descent into cult horror. It is a good bridge between classic FPS action and a more grounded supernatural mood.

6. Forgive Me Father — the best choice for Lovecraftian comic-book horror
Why it fits after Boltgun
Forgive Me Father is a dark retro horror FPS set in a comic-book world inspired by H. P. Lovecraft. Its Steam tags include Boomer Shooter, Lovecraftian, Retro, Gore and Dark Fantasy. It is the choice for players who want the old-school shooting format but care as much about atmosphere and supernatural horror as they do about speed.
The game keeps the directness expected from a retro shooter while using its comic-book presentation to frame the violence as stylized horror. Supernatural powers add another layer beyond ordinary gun handling, making the combat identity more occult than military.
Choose it if
- You want horror to shape the entire tone rather than appear as a side element.
- You prefer a comic-book visual identity with Lovecraftian themes.
- You want supernatural abilities alongside firearms in a retro-FPS structure.
Where it sits in the list
Forgive Me Father is less focused on pure speed than ULTRAKILL, Turbo Overkill or MULLET MADJACK. Its appeal is the blend of retro shooting, gore and dark-fantasy atmosphere, making it a mood-driven alternative to Boltgun rather than a direct movement upgrade.

Why it fits after Boltgun
MULLET MADJACK is built around compression and repetition. It is a high-octane shooter set inside a classic anime, with a stated objective of reaching the last floor, beating the best time and trying again. Its Steam tags include Boomer Shooter, Fast-Paced, Arcade, Score Attack and Roguelite.
Recommended Free Tools
That structure makes it different from a conventional campaign. Instead of asking you to settle into a long sequence of levels, it turns each run into a time-management problem. The pressure to keep moving and the promise of a better attempt make it especially suitable for short sessions or players who enjoy optimizing a route through repeated play.
Best Value
Choose it if
- You want the fastest, most immediately score-focused option on this list.
- You enjoy arcade rules, time pressure and improving a run through repetition.
- You prefer a stylized anime-cyberpunk presentation over military or horror settings.
What changes from Boltgun
MULLET MADJACK exchanges the traditional campaign arc for a roguelite climb and repeated time attacks. It is the best match for the sensation of speed itself, not for Boltgun’s longer-form campaign structure.
How the seven games differ
Movement intensity
| Movement tier | Games | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Extreme | MULLET MADJACK, ULTRAKILL, Turbo Overkill | They make speed, constant motion or advanced traversal central to success. |
| Classic and direct | Prodeus, CULTIC | They retain more conventional retro-FPS movement while adding their own combat hooks. |
| Combat-led rather than movement-led | AMID EVIL, Forgive Me Father | Their strongest distinctions are magical weapons, horror powers and atmosphere. |
Combat identity
- ULTRAKILL: weapon variation, combos, blood-based healing and rank chasing.
- Turbo Overkill: mobility powers, a chainsaw leg, a large weapon selection and Turbo Time.
- Prodeus: classic gunplay presented with modern rendering and retro aesthetics.
- AMID EVIL: sacred and magical weapons in dark-fantasy arenas.
- CULTIC: guns, dynamite, dodging and physics-heavy destruction.
- Forgive Me Father: retro shooting combined with supernatural horror powers.
- MULLET MADJACK: time pressure and score-attack repetition.
World and tone

|---|---|
| Boltgun | Warhammer 40,000 science-fantasy |

| AMID EVIL | Dark fantasy and psychedelic surrealism |

| MULLET MADJACK | Anime-styled cyberpunk arcade action |
Which one should you play first?
- Pick ULTRAKILL if you want Boltgun’s aggression with the deepest movement, combo and replayable-ranking systems.
- Pick Turbo Overkill if your priority is the broadest mobility toolkit and the most extravagant weapon spectacle.
- Pick Prodeus if you want another direct, classic-FPS campaign without making advanced movement the central skill.
- Pick AMID EVIL if the part of Boltgun you want to replace is the setting and arsenal, not the pace.
- Pick CULTIC if you want a darker campaign where dodging, dynamite and physical reactions shape encounters.
- Pick Forgive Me Father if Lovecraftian atmosphere and comic-book horror are more important than maximum speed.
- Pick MULLET MADJACK if you want short runs, time pressure and a reason to replay immediately after finishing.
How to choose by campaign length and replay style
For a conventional campaign experience, begin with Prodeus or CULTIC. Both are framed around a more recognizable progression from one level or encounter to the next. AMID EVIL and Forgive Me Father are better when the setting and combat theme are the main reason you want to continue.
For mastery rather than a one-time clear, ULTRAKILL offers ranks, secrets and optional challenges, while Turbo Overkill adds secrets and arena stages. MULLET MADJACK is the most explicitly repeatable: its core loop is reaching the last floor, beating your best time and starting another run. Prodeus extends its value in a different way through online PvP, online co-op and a level editor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

For most Boltgun players, start with ULTRAKILL. It shares the old-school FPS aggression while adding the richest movement and score-driven mastery loop. Choose Turbo Overkill for maximal mobility, Prodeus for the safest traditional campaign recommendation, and use the remaining four to target a specific change of mood: fantasy in AMID EVIL, cult horror in CULTIC, Lovecraftian comic-book horror in Forgive Me Father, or compressed arcade speed in MULLET MADJACK.
