For a conventional 1080p SDR stream to YouTube, use H.264 with constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and RTMPS. Set video bitrate to 14 Mbps at 30 fps or 17 Mbps at 60 fps, matching the frame rate to the source. These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest settings, not a guarantee of uninterrupted operation: a 24/7 stream also needs a continuous source, a host that can encode in real time, and enough upload bandwidth.
The command below is an adaptable example for looping a local video file with audio. Replace the input and YouTube ingest details, test it with representative content, and monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
Recommended YouTube settings for 1080p
| Setting | 1080p30 | 1080p60 |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | H.264 |
| Recommended video bitrate | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| YouTube-listed minimum video bitrate | 5 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| Rate control | CBR | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds / 60 frames | 2 seconds / 120 frames |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz |
| Contribution protocol | RTMPS | RTMPS |
| SDR picture | Progressive, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit | Progressive, square pixels, Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| H.264 advanced settings | 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC | 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC |
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The frame counts above are the arithmetic for two seconds at each listed frame rate. Its listed minimum bitrates are minimum guidance; use the recommended rate when your connection can sustain it. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers current ingest recommendations and testing.
Choose 30 or 60 fps based on the source
Use 30 fps for static or low-motion material when it represents the source adequately. Use 60 fps when the source contains substantial motion and your encoder and upload can sustain the higher workload and bitrate. Converting a 30 fps source to 60 fps does not create genuine motion detail. The 60 fps choice requires more frames to be encoded each second; that is an engineering consequence of the frame rate, not a benchmark for any particular computer.

FFmpeg command for a looping 1080p30 file
This example reads a local file with audio, scales and pads it to fit 1920×1080, encodes H.264 through libx264, and sends the result over RTMPS. It assumes a compatible input and a local FFmpeg build that includes libx264.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-profile:v high -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-bf 2 -refs 1 -coder cabac
-color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
- Replace
input.mp4with the path to your compatible video file. - In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the ingest URL and stream key for the live stream, then substitute them for the placeholders. Keep the real key private: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or article.
- Confirm that your FFmpeg build includes
libx264, then run the command and check the actual output in Live Control Room.
The scale-and-pad filter preserves the whole image inside a 1920×1080 frame and adds padding where needed. If you want to crop, use a different aspect ratio, or handle HDR, adjust the filter and color settings rather than assuming this chain is suitable. The -preset veryfast option is an illustrative speed/quality trade-off, not a universal best setting; verify that your actual host can sustain real-time encoding.

To use 1080p60
Change fps=30 to fps=60, -g 60 -keyint_min 60 to -g 120 -keyint_min 120, and the video rate-control values to -b:v 17M -minrate 17M -maxrate 17M -bufsize 34M. The 28M and 34M buffer sizes in these examples equal two seconds of the respective target bitrate; they are command-design choices, not values mandated by YouTube.
Adjust the command for different sources
- Play once and stop: remove
-stream_loop -1. - Live camera or network input: replace the file input and omit
-reunless the source’s handling specifically requires input pacing. - Audio-free file: decide whether to provide silence or omit audio, then test the resulting stream. The example expects audio and is not a ready-made silent-stream command.
- Loop transitions: inspect the end-to-start transition. A file repeated indefinitely can have a visible or audible discontinuity.
- Hardware encoder or unusual media: the example uses software
libx264; hardware encoding, HDR, unusual frame rates, and other input types may need different options.
FFmpeg documents -re as input pacing equivalent to -readrate 1. It is useful when a file needs to be read at real-time speed for streaming, but FFmpeg warns against adding it blindly to a real capture device or live network source because it can cause packet loss. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and full option reference for behavior that depends on the encoder and build.

What a 24/7 stream needs beyond encoding flags
- Keep the source available. Verify that the file loop or live capture continues supplying video and audio, and that timestamps behave correctly around transitions.
- Test representative content. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Check resolution, frame rate, audio, and stream-health feedback in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
- Confirm sustained encoding capacity. Check that output stays at real time and the encoder does not repeatedly fall behind. Performance varies by machine, encoder, and settings; no particular host performance is established here.
- Check available upload bandwidth. The total outgoing stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth. Leave practical margin for variation, but there is no universal headroom percentage established by YouTube’s guidance. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Monitor stream health. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event; correct the reported problem rather than assuming the command’s flags prove reliability.
- Plan recovery separately. FFmpeg encoding options alone do not provide process supervision, host restart, power backup, or network failover. Decide how the host and process will recover if either stops.
Troubleshooting common FFmpeg stream problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports unstable or poor stream health | The outgoing bitrate may exceed available upload bandwidth, or the connection may vary. | Check actual upload capacity while streaming and reduce the target bitrate or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the recommended rate. |
| Video falls behind or the encoder cannot keep real time | The host may not encode the selected resolution and frame rate fast enough. | Check sustained output performance on the actual machine. Consider 30 fps instead of 60 fps if the source permits, or revise the encoding workload; test before relying on it continuously. |
| No connection to YouTube | Ingest URL, stream key, or contribution protocol may be wrong. | Copy the current ingest details from Live Control Room, verify the RTMPS destination, and replace any expired or incorrect key. Never expose the key while troubleshooting. |
| Picture has bars or an unexpected crop | The scale-and-pad filter fits the full image to 16:9 rather than cropping it. | Check the source aspect ratio and select a filter chain that matches whether you want padding, cropping, or another output size. |
| Audio is missing or distorted | The example assumes a file with usable audio and forces AAC stereo output. | Inspect the input’s audio stream and test the actual output. For a file without audio, explicitly choose silence or omit the audio stream and validate the result. |
| Playback jumps at the loop point | The repeated file may not have seamless picture, sound, or timestamps at its endpoints. | Review the transition in the source and test repeated playback before running it continuously. |
| Stream stops after a host or process failure | The FFmpeg command does not supervise itself or restart the host. | Provide an independently configured recovery plan for the process and host; the command alone cannot restore power, connectivity, or a stopped process. |
Or let it run in the cloud
