You no longer have to wait for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls. The 4v4 tag-team fighter launched on PlayStation 5 and PC on August 6, 2026 (August 7 in Japan by local time). This guide keeps the original “while you wait” search intent, but updates it for the released game and identifies the closest alternatives for different priorities.
Start with Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics if Marvel crossover history matters most, Dragon Ball FighterZ if you want another Arc System Works team fighter with anime spectacle, or Guilty Gear -Strive- if Arc’s visual identity and deeper one-on-one format are the main draw. None is a mechanical duplicate of Tōkon’s 4v4 design.

First, the wait is over
MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a released game, not an upcoming one. The official support FAQ, updated August 18, 2026, lists the PlayStation 5 and PC launch as August 6, 2026, with Japan receiving access on August 7 by local time. PC versions are available through Steam and Epic.
The original search wording remains useful for readers who saved an older article, are deciding what to play before buying Tōkon, or want “games like Marvel Tōkon” after seeing its launch. The recommendations below are therefore organized by the particular part of Tōkon you want to reproduce: Marvel crossover appeal, team-based anime fighting, or Arc System Works’ presentation and combat philosophy.

What MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls actually offers
A four-character team format
The official PlayStation Store listing describes Tōkon as a 4v4 tag-team fighting game developed by PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games. Four characters form a team, and assists can create openings for a brief switch to a teammate. That makes the game’s central question broader than “which fighter do I pick?” You are also deciding how four characters support one another and when to bring each one into the fight.

Game Director and Lead Battle Designer Kazuto Sekine explained in a PlayStation interview published August 11, 2025: “We wanted to challenge ourselves to create a new tag fighter.” He also said, “You only need to learn to play as one character in order to enjoy the game, and you can still see your other teammates coming in and out of the battlefield.” That design goal makes Tōkon more approachable than a system that expects a new player to master an entire roster before having fun.
Twenty launch characters
The PlayStation Store specification lists 20 launch characters. That is a product count, not evidence that Tōkon has a larger or better roster than another fighting game. It does establish that the starting lineup is built around multiple four-person team possibilities rather than a tiny introductory cast.
Inputs aimed at new and returning players
The official listing highlights adjustable controls, quick inputs and easy chain combos. These features are intended to reduce the friction between selecting a character and performing recognizable attacks. They do not remove the need to learn spacing, assists, defensive timing or team decisions, but they give beginners a way to participate before they understand every advanced input.

Marvel and anime in the same visual language
Marvel Games Senior Product Development Manager Michael Francisco described the art direction as a fusion of Marvel and American comics with Japanese anime and manga. That combination is central to Tōkon’s identity: it is not simply a realistic superhero game and not simply an anime fighter with Marvel licensing. The character designs and presentation deliberately sit between those traditions.

1. Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics
Choose it for Marvel crossover history
This is the strongest recommendation for readers whose priority is seeing Marvel characters in the context of classic crossover fighting games. The collection preserves the legacy that made Marvel team fighters a distinct part of the genre, making it the natural starting point for searches such as “fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom.”
Its value is historical and archival as much as competitive. You can examine how earlier Marvel crossovers handled teams, assists and dramatic screen-filling attacks, then compare those ideas with the newer four-character structure in Tōkon. That makes the collection useful even if your final destination is Tōkon rather than a long-term commitment to older arcade games.
Where it differs from Tōkon
Do not treat the collection as a one-for-one substitute. Tōkon is designed around four-person teams, current Arc System Works presentation and a modern onboarding approach. The collection gathers older games with their own rules, pacing and input expectations. The shared Marvel crossover lineage is the reason to choose it; identical mechanics are not.
Who should start here
- Players who want Marvel characters before anything else.
- Fans interested in the history of Marvel team fighters.
- Players who prefer a collection of arcade-era titles to a single new release.
- Anyone comparing how tag and assist concepts evolved into Tōkon’s 4v4 format.
Because platform and retail formats can vary by region and edition, verify the current listing for the system you use.

Choose it for anime spectacle and team play
Dragon Ball FighterZ is the most direct alternative when the appeal is an anime-influenced team fighter made by Arc System Works. The comparison is about structure and presentation, not shared characters: it uses the Dragon Ball universe and its own combat systems, while Tōkon uses Marvel’s roster and a four-character concept.

- Invincible VS is a brutal superhero 3v3 tag fighting game set in the Invincible universe, where you can battle to the death as a team of fan-favorite characters in iconic locations.
- Unleash bone-breaking combos through fast combat and smart defensive tactics to leave a trail of blood and destruction.
- Invincible VS features a variety of game modes including a captivating cinematic story mode with an original narrative from a writer of the animated series.
- This physical edition includes a set of 4 Keepsake trading cards, featuring selected playable fighters from the game’s 3v3 roster.
- You’ll also get a printed controller layout card to help you jump into Invincible VS and quickly get a feel for its fast, combo-heavy combat.
For a player waiting to understand whether Arc System Works’ approach suits them, FighterZ provides a useful point of reference. You can experience a team-based game in which character selection and assists matter, then decide whether Tōkon’s larger 4v4 structure and Marvel cast address what you wanted next.
Where it differs from Tōkon
FighterZ is not a Marvel game and should not be presented as an interchangeable license. Its mechanics, character interactions and match flow are specific to Dragon Ball FighterZ. Tōkon also emphasizes quick inputs, easy chain combos and the ability to enjoy the game while focusing on one character; those are official Tōkon design points, not claims about FighterZ.
Who should start here
- Players who want anime-scale attacks and a recognizable team format.
- Arc System Works fans who want another game from the developer before playing Tōkon.
- Readers more interested in team combat than in Marvel specifically.
- Players who want to compare a known anime property with Tōkon’s Marvel-and-manga visual blend.
A post-launch review from Tom’s Guide, published August 12, 2026, described Tōkon as mechanically closer to Arc System Works games including Dragon Ball FighterZ. That is a reviewer’s comparison, not an official statement that the games are equivalent.

Choose it for Arc’s anime identity
Guilty Gear -Strive- is the right choice when the part of Tōkon that interests you most is Arc System Works’ visual language, dramatic character design and fighting-game depth. It offers a way to understand the studio’s broader approach without requiring a Marvel license or a four-person team.
The connection is especially relevant because Tōkon’s developers are using a Marvel-and-American-comics theme through an anime and manga lens. Guilty Gear -Strive- demonstrates Arc’s anime presentation in its own original setting, so it can help you decide whether that aesthetic is appealing before you commit to Tōkon.
Where it differs from Tōkon
Guilty Gear -Strive- does not reproduce Tōkon’s 4v4 tag-team format. Its match structure is different, and the appeal is more about Arc’s style and fighting-game depth than about managing four Marvel characters and their assists. Choose it as a complementary game, not as a substitute for Tōkon’s team design.

Who should start here
- Players drawn to Arc System Works’ anime presentation.
- Fighting-game fans who prefer a different match format from a 4v4 tag fighter.
- Readers who want to study the developer’s design language rather than Marvel crossover history.
- Players looking for a deeper Arc-focused alternative after trying a more accessible team game.
Tom’s Guide’s August 12, 2026 review also grouped Tōkon with Guilty Gear: Strive when discussing its Arc System Works influences. Again, that is subjective review framing rather than a claim of identical systems.

If Marvel is non-negotiable
Pick Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. It is the only recommendation here built around Marvel crossover history. It will not teach you every Tōkon-specific mechanic, but it gives the clearest context for why Marvel team fighters matter.
If team-based anime combat is the priority
Pick Dragon Ball FighterZ. It is the closest fit for the combination of Arc System Works development, anime spectacle and team play. Expect a different ruleset and do not assume skills transfer perfectly.
If Arc System Works’ style matters more than teams
Pick Guilty Gear -Strive-. It addresses the visual and developer connection while intentionally offering a different match format. This is the best option for readers who want to explore Arc’s fighting-game identity rather than recreate a four-character Marvel team.
If you want the closest eventual Tōkon experience
None of the three is a complete substitute. Tōkon’s defining combination is a 4v4 Marvel tag-team structure, adjustable controls, quick inputs, easy chain combos and an anime-influenced comic-book presentation. The alternatives each reproduce only part of that combination.
Tōkon’s modes and access requirements
Offline content
The official FAQ lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides and Character Guides as offline content. On PlayStation 5, these modes do not require PlayStation Plus. On PC, they can be played without a PlayStation account.
Best Value
- Assemble your team of legendary Marvel characters in the ultimate 4v4 tag team fighter from PlayStation Studios, Arc System Works and Marvel Games.
- Experiment with team compositions to discover new combos, synergies, and strategies. Blast your way through dynamic stages based on iconic Marvel Universe locales, some featuring interactive stage transitions.
- Fighting is both immersive and intuitive, with a range of unique move sets, combos, and strategies to master. Adjustable controls, both traditional and quick inputs, plus easy chain combos make diving right in a breeze.
- Face off against a friend locally or join the fray with up to 64 players in the online lobby, including standard VS modes. Plus, dive deep on each team with the single player Episode Mode to learn more about team dynamics and lore.
That offline lineup matters when deciding whether an alternative is needed. If you are waiting for an online group, you can still use Tōkon’s story, local and training content after installing it. You do not need an active subscription merely to access the listed offline modes on PS5.
Online requirements
Online modes require an internet connection and a platform account. On PS5, online play requires PlayStation Plus. On PC, online play requires a PlayStation account. These requirements are different, so a PC player should not assume that avoiding a console subscription removes every account requirement.
| Platform | Offline modes | Online play |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Does not require PlayStation Plus | Requires internet access, a platform account and PlayStation Plus |
| PC | Can be played without a PlayStation account | Requires internet access and a PlayStation account |
What this means for a new player
You can begin with Training Mode, Character Guides or Episode Mode, learn one character and gradually add the rest of your team. That progression follows Sekine’s stated design goal: one character is enough to start enjoying the game while teammates appear through assists and switches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA practical path from an alternative into Tōkon
- Choose the alternative that matches your main interest. Marvel history points to Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection; team-based anime play points to Dragon Ball FighterZ; Arc’s presentation points to Guilty Gear -Strive-.
- Learn one playable character first. Tōkon is explicitly designed so that a player can enjoy it without mastering the full team immediately.
- Pay attention to assists and switches. The important transfer is not memorizing another game’s exact inputs; it is understanding how a teammate can create an opening and when a brief switch is useful.
- Use Tōkon’s training and guide modes. Training Mode, Battle Guides and Character Guides are included among the official offline options.
- Add local or online play after the basics. Local Versus works as an offline test of team decisions. Online play has the platform-specific account and subscription requirements listed above.
What “best” can and cannot mean here
There is no measured universal ranking that proves one of these games is the best preparation for Tōkon. “Best” depends on the feature you are trying to carry forward. A Marvel fan may value crossover characters over mechanical similarity. An Arc System Works fan may prefer Guilty Gear -Strive- even though it is not a tag fighter. A player focused on anime team combat may find Dragon Ball FighterZ the most useful bridge.
The most accurate conclusion is therefore conditional: Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is the best historical Marvel fit; Dragon Ball FighterZ is the best team-based anime fit; and Guilty Gear -Strive- is the best Arc-focused style fit. Tōkon itself is the only title in this group that combines Marvel characters, a 4v4 tag-team format and the specific accessibility features described in its official listing.
