That advice is not a Square Enix ranking, and it does not make Scholar the best choice for every party or play style.

Is your first job choice permanent?
No. The September 2026 guide says the protagonist can unlock all eight jobs, and that learning five skills in a job unlocks another job. Your opening choice still affects your early toolkit and where you spend early job points, so it matters at the start—but it is better understood as an opening preference than a permanent build commitment.
How to adjust your skills later
Your initial job is only one part of character customization. Square Enix describes Action Skills, Ultimate Techniques, and Mastery items that allow skills to be used interchangeably; the Training Ground lets companions learn skills.
