Choose the Golden Fleece if you want damage to build with each kill and can manage its severe hit penalty; choose the Fleece of the Fates if you want four random Tarot Cards from the start and are willing to give up later card pickups. The default Fleece of the Lamb is the neutral option.
How to choose the best fleece
Think about what you want from a run: a damage ramp, early Tarot effects, or no fleece-specific modifier. The Golden Fleece and Fleece of the Fates make different trade-offs, so neither is a universal upgrade. These recommendations reflect their documented mechanics, not a tested win-rate comparison.

Choose the Golden Fleece for a damage ramp
The Golden Fleece adds 5% damage per kill. The bonus resets when you are hit, and incoming damage is doubled, making it a high-risk choice that rewards avoiding hits. It is most appealing if you are comfortable with that risk; a single hit can erase the accumulated bonus while the doubled-damage drawback remains.
Choose the Fleece of the Fates for cards at the start
The Fleece of the Fates gives you four random Tarot Cards at the beginning of a run, but you cannot pick up additional Tarot Cards afterward. It front-loads card effects rather than letting you build a Tarot selection as you progress.

Keep the default for a neutral baseline
The Fleece of the Lamb has no gameplay bonus in the documented description. If you prefer not to take on a fleece-specific benefit or penalty, it is the straightforward baseline.
How the other documented fleece works
Fleece of the Diseased Heart
Each Tarot Card gained grants a Diseased Heart, but you can carry only one at a time. Taking damage poisons the Lamb, so the heart benefit comes with a hit-triggered downside. Consider both parts of the effect rather than treating it as a simple extra-heart fleece.

- BUILD YOUR FLOCK - Collect and use resources to build new structures, perform dark rituals to appease the gods, and give sermons to reinforce the faith of your flock
- DESTROY THE NON-BELIEVERS - Explore a sprawling, randomly generated world, fight off hordes of enemies and defeat rival cult leaders in order to absorb their power and assert your cult's dominance
- SPREAD YOUR WORD - Train your flock and embark on a quest to explore and discover the secrets
What to know about the wider fleece roster
Other functional options include Hobbled Heels, Fervor’s Favor, Berserker, Cursed Crusade, and Woolhaven-related fleeces. A complete current comparison of their effects and unlock requirements is not established here, so check each fleece’s description in your version of the game before choosing it. This matters especially for post-game and DLC options.
Fleeces have more than one unlock route. Many are obtained by completing Holy Talisman pieces and then spending them in the Temple’s Crown section, while others depend on different progression conditions or post-game content. Requirements vary by fleece, so confirm the specific unlock in-game rather than assuming every option follows the same route.

- Build your flock: Collect and use resources to build new structures, perform dark rituals to appease the gods, and give sermons to reinforce the faith of your flock.
- Destroy the non-believers: Explore a sprawling, randomly generated world, fight off hordes of enemies and defeat rival cult leaders in order to absorb their power and assert your cult's dominance.
- Spread the word: Train your flock and embark on a quest to explore and discover the secrets of five mysterious regions. Cleanse the non-believers, spread enlightenment and perform mystical rituals on the journey to become the mighty lamb god.
The documented fleece mechanics and broad unlock overview come from the Cult of the Lamb Wiki’s Fleeces reference, crawled roughly three months before this article’s research date. A Game Design Lab reference names additional options but does not provide a complete item-by-item comparison. Since fleece details can change with updates, use the current in-game description for patch-sensitive choices.

Quick recommendation
- Want damage that grows with kills? Pick the Golden Fleece if you can tolerate doubled incoming damage and losing the bonus when hit.
- Want Tarot effects immediately? Pick the Fleece of the Fates if four random cards are worth more to you than acquiring further cards during the run.
- Want no fleece-specific gameplay modifier? Keep the Fleece of the Lamb.
- Considering the Diseased Heart fleece? Weigh its Tarot-linked heart against the poison effect when hit.
