Native Linux versus Proton: the distinction that prevents confusion
What “native Linux” means
A native Linux game has a Linux build intended to run directly on the operating system. The executable, libraries, and launch process are supplied for Linux rather than being a Windows package translated by a compatibility layer.
Ubuntu’s Steam documentation says that Proton is software developed by Valve that allows Windows games to run on Linux through Steam Play. The same documentation explains that when a game installs and runs without Proton, it is native and is likely to work best without Proton. Native status therefore describes the game build, not merely whether a user can make the game start.
What Proton does
Valve’s support material describes Steam Play as a way for Windows-only games to potentially work on Linux. Valve’s Proton project describes Proton as a Steam Play tool that uses Wine and related components. Proton translates or supplies pieces of the Windows environment needed by the game; it does not turn the Windows executable into a native Linux release.
Proton can be an excellent way to play many Windows games, but every title remains a separate compatibility case. Updates to the game, launcher, graphics stack, or anti-cheat service can change the result without any change to Linux itself.
How to label a game accurately
- Use native Linux when the publisher or project provides a Linux client.
- Use Windows build through Proton when Linux runs the Windows version through Steam Play.
- Use unconfirmed when an announcement describes planned support but does not document a current playable release.

What Epic has actually announced
Epic Online Services says Easy Anti-Cheat has supported native Linux clients since 2014 and Windows builds running through Wine or Proton since 2021. That statement concerns Easy Anti-Cheat as a technology and does not automatically mean that every game using it is enabled on Linux.
The same announcement says Epic planned to pilot “EAC Linux v2” in Fortnite. “Planned to pilot” describes intended or ongoing work, not a confirmed public native release. Do not treat the announcement as proof that Fortnite currently installs, authenticates, and permits online play on Linux.
Why anti-cheat is a separate compatibility question
A game can render correctly and still reject online play if its anti-cheat service does not support the operating system, launcher, or compatibility layer. Conversely, an anti-cheat update can add or remove support without changing the game’s graphics requirements. For a competitive multiplayer title, authentication and server access are part of compatibility, not an optional extra.
What this means if you want Fortnite specifically
If Fortnite is non-negotiable, a supported Windows installation remains the clearly established route in the information available here. Linux users can monitor official Epic announcements, but should not plan a setup around a pilot statement or assume that a working launcher guarantees access to protected matches.
