There is no single best first-person shooter for every PC gamer. Choose by the experience you want: Counter-Strike 2 for deliberate, round-based team competition; VALORANT for tactical gunplay with character abilities; Battlefield 6 for large-scale multiplayer and community-created modes; or DOOM: The Dark Ages for a solo campaign. Check each game’s current PC requirements before installing or buying—especially if your PC is older.
Which PC FPS fits the way you want to play?
| Game | Best fit | What to expect | Important PC consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Counter-Strike 2 | Players who want tactical team rounds | Round-based matches reward communication, sound awareness, map tactics, and learning weapon firing patterns and recoil. | Check the current store or publisher listing for system requirements; the sources cited here do not state a comparable requirements profile. |
| VALORANT | Players who want tactical rounds plus character abilities | Gunplay and positioning combine with distinct agent abilities. Its tactical demands make teamwork and deliberate decisions central. | Riot publishes several performance-target tiers and specific Windows 11 security requirements. |
| Battlefield 6 | Players who want large-scale multiplayer and varied modes | Includes single-player and online PvP; EA also highlights Portal tools for community-created experiences. | Review EA’s current PC requirements. Listed requirements include 16 GB RAM and specific Windows security capabilities. |
| DOOM: The Dark Ages | Players looking for a campaign-led shooter | A solo-focused choice among these recommendations, with PC access listed through Battle.net and Game Pass. | Requires a ray-tracing-capable GPU even at minimum settings, plus an NVMe SSD. |
Best FPS picks by play style
Counter-Strike 2: tactical rounds and team coordination
Choose Counter-Strike 2 if you want matches built around coordinated, round-based objectives rather than a constant stream of large-scale combat. The cited GamesRadar+ overview describes Terrorists-versus-Counter-Terrorists rounds, where listening for opponents, communicating with teammates, understanding maps, and controlling weapon recoil all matter. That makes it a strong editorial pick for players who enjoy practicing specific skills and making decisions with a team.
Because those skills are part of the appeal, it may be less satisfying if you want a campaign or prefer a shooter that relies less on communication and sound awareness. The source pages reviewed here do not provide a directly comparable PC requirements profile for this game; check its current official store listing before installing.
VALORANT: tactical play with character abilities
VALORANT is another tactical team-shooter option, but its character abilities add a layer beyond positioning and gunplay. It suits players who want to coordinate with a team while learning how distinct abilities shape each round. The tactical format is not the same as Counter-Strike 2’s: decide whether you want abilities to be a defining part of your team strategy.

Riot’s VALORANT PC specifications page, dated May 21, 2026, lists minimum, recommended, and high-end tiers targeting 30, 60, and 144 FPS respectively. It also specifies Windows 10 64-bit (build 19041 or later) or Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 11, and a processor supporting SSE 4.2 or AVX. Riot states that Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot; cloud gaming and virtual machines are unsupported. These are Riot’s listed targets and compatibility conditions, not a guarantee of competitive performance on a particular PC.
Battlefield 6: large-scale multiplayer and community-created experiences
Consider Battlefield 6 if you want more than one kind of shooter experience in a single game. Steam lists single-player, online PvP, and cross-platform multiplayer. EA highlights native Steam support, ultrawide and super-ultrawide display support, graphics features, and Portal creation tools for building or playing community experiences. Portal may appeal if you want player-created variations rather than only standard modes.

For compatibility, consult EA’s current Battlefield 6 PC requirements before committing to the game. Steam’s listing includes Windows 10, 16 GB RAM, and requirements involving TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, and HVCI/VBS capability; platform information can change, so EA’s current requirements page is the better final check. Steam lists an October 10, 2025 release date.
DOOM: The Dark Ages: a campaign-led pick with demanding hardware needs
If you would rather play a solo campaign than build your time around competitive matches, DOOM: The Dark Ages is the clearest fit among these picks. Bethesda lists PC availability through Battle.net and Game Pass. Its official PC specifications announcement sets out minimum, recommended, and Ultra 4K configurations.

- Next-gen 12,000 DPI HERO optical sensor delivers unrivaled gaming performance, accuracy and power efficiency
- Advanced LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming mouse for super-fast 1 ms response time and faster than wired performance
- Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery
- Lightweight mechanical design and classic shape for maximum maneuverability, durability and comfort
- Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver
The minimum configuration targets 1080p at 60 FPS on low settings and calls for 16 GB RAM, 100 GB of available space on an NVMe SSD, and a ray-tracing-capable GPU with at least 8 GB of dedicated VRAM. The recommended configuration targets 1440p at 60 FPS on high settings, with 32 GB RAM and a GPU with at least 10 GB of dedicated VRAM. Bethesda says a ray-tracing-compatible GPU is required even for the minimum configuration, so do not assume a PC that runs older shooters will handle this one.
How to compare FPS games before choosing
- Mode: Decide whether you want a campaign, team PvP, cooperative play, battle royale, or community-created modes. The four picks above cover campaign, tactical team rounds, and large-scale multiplayer, but not every FPS style.
- Pace and tactics: Round-based tactical games reward communication, sound awareness, map knowledge, and weapon handling. Large-scale multiplayer offers a different kind of match, while a campaign lets you focus on solo play.
- Hardware: Compare your Windows version, processor, graphics card and VRAM, memory, storage, and any security requirements against the game’s current official page. Requirements are game-specific; one game’s minimum does not predict another’s.
- Access and content: Confirm the current access route and review the relevant official store page for content details and any preferences or restrictions that matter to you. The access routes named here are specific to the cited Bethesda announcement, not a general pricing comparison.
- Team voice chat: A headset with a microphone is an optional way to hear and communicate with teammates in team-based play. No particular headset is required or recommended here.
Other FPS styles to explore
PC Gamer’s living guide organizes recommendations across single-player, co-op, and competitive shooters, while GamesRadar+’s list also covers battle royale and retro-styled games. Those categories can help you narrow down what to try next, but availability and PC requirements vary by title. Check a game’s current official listing and system requirements rather than assuming that a recommendation for PC players means it will run on your hardware.
