Berserk Boy is a fast, combo-driven 2D action platformer built around elemental powers, dashes, and brisk stage traversal. Its official descriptions promise multiple stages, alternate routes, hidden missions, and collectibles, while Steam calls it a platformer with “Metroidvania elements”—not necessarily a sprawling, open-ended Metroidvania. It looks best suited to players who want kinetic retro-styled action; the available review evidence is encouraging but does not establish performance across every platform or a universal critic consensus.

What kind of game is Berserk Boy?

Developed and published by BerserkBoy Games, Berserk Boy released on March 6, 2024. Steam categorizes it as Action, Adventure, and Indie, and describes it as a high-speed platformer with Metroidvania elements. The premise follows Kei, a rookie hero changed by Orb energy, as he fights Dr. Genos and his Dark Energy forces.

The action is organized around five elemental powers: Lightning, Fire, Earth, Air, and Ice. The official listings describe a movement-and-combat loop involving jumping, dashing, slamming, sliding, and chaining attacks to build a Berserk Meter. Abilities can be unlocked and upgraded, and the stages include alternate paths, hidden missions, and collectibles. Steam’s listing and the Nintendo Switch listing present the core premise and feature set.

Is Berserk Boy a Metroidvania?

Steam’s exact genre description is a “high speed action packed Platformer, with Metroidvania elements.” That wording matters: the available official feature descriptions emphasize multiple stages, alternate routes, hidden missions, and collectibles, but do not establish a large interconnected map or the degree of backtracking often associated with a full Metroidvania. Expect a stage-based action platformer with exploration opportunities rather than assuming a sprawling, non-linear adventure.

Is Berserk Boy worth playing?

The clearest reason to try it is the combination of momentum-focused traversal and elemental combat. Dashing, sliding, slamming, and building combos are central, so the game’s appeal depends on whether you enjoy keeping movement and attacks flowing rather than slowing down for a heavily story-led or methodical experience. Its retro-inspired presentation and stage-based structure also suit players looking for a focused action-platformer.

Steam’s listing showed 87% of 318 user reviews as positive, categorized “Very Positive,” in August 2026. That is a changing Steam user-review aggregate, not a critic score or a permanent rating; its count and percentage can shift. Metacritic’s surfaced critic-review summaries likewise characterize the platforming and combat as energetic, but the available evidence does not provide a verified named reviewer quotation or a comprehensive critic consensus.

There is a Switch user report on Metacritic describing repeated crashes during level transitions. It is one anecdotal report, not proof of a widespread or ongoing issue. No platform-wide reliability conclusion can be drawn from it.
