For natural-looking sports footage, match your capture frame rate to the video’s intended playback rate and start with a shutter speed near twice that frame rate: for example, 60 fps at about 1/120 second. To create slow motion, record faster than the playback timeline. There is no single best setting for every sport: the right choice depends on how much slow motion you want, the motion-blur look, available light and your camera’s recording limits.
What frame rate should you use for sports video?
Choose the capture rate based on how the footage will play. For real-time video, record at the rate intended for the finished timeline. For slow motion, record at a higher rate than the timeline so the extra captured frames can be played back more slowly. Fujifilm explains the relationship with examples such as 60 fps footage on a 24 fps timeline and recommends selecting a rate for the intended effect, not simply choosing the camera’s maximum setting (Fujifilm’s frame-rate guide).
Real-time footage
Use the delivery frame rate when you want the action to play at normal speed. Common choices include 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60 fps, but which is suitable depends on your project and camera. If you record and edit at different rates, check how your editing software handles the mismatch before filming important action.
Slow motion
Record more frames per second than the timeline rate, then play those frames at the timeline rate. The ratio determines the slowdown: 60 fps played on a 30 fps timeline is half speed; 120 fps on a 30 fps timeline is one quarter speed. These are arithmetic examples, not requirements for a particular sport. Higher capture rates can give you more room to slow an action, but select a rate that suits the moment and that your camera can record in the desired resolution and format.

Fujifilm’s examples illustrate why action matters: a tennis serve may suit 240 fps, while a golf putt may be better served by 120 or 100 fps. Those are creative examples, not fixed sports standards. Its guidance suggests 50 or 100 fps when making slow motion for a 25 fps timeline (Fujifilm’s slow-motion guide).
What shutter speed should you use for sports video?
Use the 180-degree shutter guideline as a starting point: expose each frame for about half of its frame interval. That corresponds approximately to a shutter speed of 1 divided by twice the frame rate. It gives a familiar amount of motion blur for natural-looking movement, but it is a baseline for a particular look—not a camera law or a universal sports setting. Nikon explains how shutter angle relates exposure time to frame rate in its shutter-angle guide.

| Capture frame rate | Approximate 180° shutter speed |
|---|---|
| 24 fps | 1/48 sec (often 1/50) |
| 25 fps | 1/50 sec |
| 30 fps | 1/60 sec |
| 50 fps | 1/100 sec |
| 60 fps | 1/120 sec |
| 100 fps | 1/200 sec |
| 120 fps | 1/240 sec |
These values are calculations from the 180-degree relationship; your camera may offer rounded shutter values. Fujifilm specifically gives 24 fps at 1/48 or 1/50 and 120 fps at 1/240 as examples in its slow-motion guide.
When to use a faster shutter
A shutter speed faster than the 180-degree starting point shortens exposure and reduces motion blur. Fast movement can look crisper, but motion may also appear more staccato. The shorter exposure lets in less light, so it can make correct exposure harder—especially in slow-motion modes. Sony flags this exposure difficulty in its ILME-FX3 S&Q settings guide.

When to use a slower shutter
A shutter angle above 180 degrees increases motion blur. That can make movement feel smoother or more smeared, depending on the action and intended style. Judge the result on a test clip rather than assuming a particular shutter speed is right for all sports.
How to choose settings for a specific shot
- Decide how the clip should play. For real time, select the intended delivery rate. For slow motion, choose the timeline rate first, then select a higher capture rate to create the desired slowdown.
- Start near 180 degrees. Set shutter speed to roughly 1/(2 × capture frame rate), using the table above as a guide. Apply this to the capture rate, including when recording high-frame-rate footage for slow motion.
- Adjust for the look. If the action looks too blurred, test a faster shutter and assess both motion character and exposure. If it looks too staccato, return toward the 180-degree value or test a slower shutter.
- Check light and exposure. Faster shutters reduce the light reaching the sensor. Confirm that your chosen aperture, ISO and available lighting can produce a usable exposure without unwanted noise or clipping.
- Test the actual camera mode. Before an important event, verify the selected resolution, codec, frame rate, recording duration, audio behavior and exposure limits. High-frame-rate options can depend on the camera and mode; manufacturer specifications are model-specific.
If indoor lighting produces flicker or exposure constraints prevent the desired shutter, treat the 180-degree value as a starting point and test the combination in the actual venue. A rate or shutter recommendation cannot be separated from the camera, lighting and delivery conditions.

Camera mode limits and practical checks
Frame-rate labels do not guarantee every combination of quality and recording features. For example, Insta360’s official support manual lists 120 fps and 240 fps slow-motion choices for supported Ace-series cameras, including Ace, Ace Pro and Ace Pro 2; check the relevant mode details for the model you own (Insta360 Ace Series slow-motion documentation). Sony’s FX3 guidance likewise notes the exposure challenge that can accompany fast shutter settings in slow motion (Sony FX3 Help Guide).
- Confirm your camera supports the chosen frame rate at the required resolution and codec.
- Check whether the mode changes audio recording, clip duration or other recording behavior.
- Test exposure and motion rendering in representative lighting, particularly before a one-time event.
- Review a clip at the intended playback rate; the camera’s preview may not show the final slow-motion result as it will appear in editing.
Common problems and fixes
The footage looks too blurry
Motion blur may be excessive for the look you want. Try a shutter speed faster than the 180-degree starting point, then check exposure because the shorter exposure reduces light.

The movement looks harsh or staccato
The shutter may be too fast for the desired motion character. Test a shutter closer to the 180-degree value or slower, and compare the result at the intended playback rate.
The slow-motion clip does not slow down as expected
Check the capture rate and timeline rate. Slow motion comes from playing captured frames at a lower rate; recording at the same rate as the timeline does not create the same slowdown as recording above it.
The image is underexposed in high-frame-rate mode
A fast shutter reduces exposure, and some slow-motion modes may make proper exposure difficult. Add light or adjust other exposure settings where possible, or choose a lower capture rate or less aggressive shutter setting. Confirm what the specific camera mode permits.
The selected rate or resolution is unavailable
Some cameras restrict frame rates by resolution, codec or mode. Check the manual for the exact model and recording mode rather than assuming a rate listed for another camera will be available.
