BoxCast Spark is a single-input HEVC encoder for sending a finished camera or switcher feed to BoxCast for streaming. It is not a multi-camera switcher. It supports HDMI or SDI, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and manufacturer-advertised streaming up to 4K60; however, 4K60 streaming and local recording cannot run simultaneously. The hardware also depends on a paid BoxCast subscription, so weigh the encoder and service together before buying.
What the BoxCast Spark does
Spark takes one video program feed and encodes it for delivery through BoxCast. You can connect a camera directly, or place Spark after a production switcher and send it the finished program output. BoxCast’s support guide confirms that Spark has one video input and does not switch cameras: Spark Compatible Video Resolutions + Frame Rates.
The manufacturer lists a 4.3-inch touchscreen with live preview, audio level controls, an onscreen network speed test, a customizable RGB status ring, scheduling and multistreaming automation, BoxCast Flow transport, and microSD backup recording. These are manufacturer specifications and feature claims, not independent test results. The 2024 launch announcement likewise describes the product and platform integration from BoxCast’s perspective: BoxCast’s Spark: An Affordable, Feature-Rich HEVC Encoder for Churches.
Choose HDMI or SDI for your existing chain
Choose the Spark variant that matches the output available from your camera or production switcher and the cabling already installed. Neither version adds camera switching; in a multi-camera workflow, the switcher remains responsible for producing the single finished feed.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Variant | Input standard | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI 2.0a | A camera or switcher with an available HDMI output and a suitable HDMI cable run. |
| SDI | SD/HD/3G/6G/12G-SDI | A production chain that already uses SDI output and installed SDI cabling. |
Check the exact output format from the source device against Spark’s supported formats before a service or event. BoxCast’s current resolution guide lists supported inputs up to 2160p (3840×2160) at 60 fps: supported Spark video resolutions and frame rates.
Video, audio, and local recording
Video resolution and streaming
BoxCast advertises streaming up to 4K60. According to BoxCast, Spark selects a streaming resolution based on the incoming video and available bandwidth, so an input’s maximum resolution should not be treated as a guarantee that every network can sustain that stream. Verify the supported format and available bandwidth for the specific setup before relying on 4K60.

Audio inputs
Spark can use audio embedded in HDMI or SDI. Its specifications also list balanced stereo analog input on two ¼-inch TRS jacks and unbalanced stereo input on a 3.5mm jack. BoxCast says the encoder accepts a 48kHz audio signal; make sure the mixer or upstream device is configured to supply that rate. See BoxCast’s audio connection guide.
For a mixer with XLR outputs feeding Spark’s balanced analog inputs, BoxCast recommends two balanced XLR-female-to-¼-inch-TRS-male cables, one for each channel. Match the cable and signal level to the mixer output, and do not convert XLR directly to 3.5mm as a substitute for the balanced connection.

MicroSD backup recording
BoxCast specifies a Class I microSD card with at least 16GB capacity, formatted as ext4 or exFAT, for local recording. The manufacturer states that streaming and recording at 4K60 cannot happen simultaneously. If recording locally is important, plan the workflow and resolution around that restriction rather than assuming the maximum stream mode and backup recording can be combined. The Spark Technical Specifications document lists the card requirements.
How to set up and test Spark
BoxCast’s setup instructions specify the included 12V power adapter, clip-on stand, and clip-on wall mount; the unit is also tripod- and VESA-compatible. First power-on may take 20–30 seconds. Ethernet is BoxCast’s recommended network connection for stability, while Wi-Fi is supported. Consult the Getting Started with Spark guide for the current walkthrough.

- Position and power the encoder. Attach the stand or wall mount if needed, connect the included 12V adapter, and allow the unit time to start.
- Complete onscreen onboarding. Follow the prompts on the touchscreen on first use.
- Connect the network. Use Ethernet where practical; otherwise connect to Wi-Fi. BoxCast recommends Ethernet for stability.
- Connect the program video. Feed the HDMI or SDI input that matches your Spark version. For multiple cameras, connect the output of the production switcher, not individual cameras.
- Connect separate audio if needed. If the audio is not embedded in the video feed, connect the analog input using a cable appropriate to the mixer output. Confirm the source supplies 48kHz audio.
- Run a Quick Test. In BoxCast Dashboard, open Schedule, choose Quick Test, select Spark as the source, and start the test broadcast. Allow roughly 30–45 seconds for the encoder to configure. The test is visible inside the dashboard, not as a public broadcast.
For a useful diagnostic, send a representative live program feed. BoxCast warns that a black screen, color bars, or a slideshow can make diagnostics appear worse than they are.

BoxCast’s product-page content retrieved on October 3, 2026 listed the HDMI version at $999 and the SDI version at $1,299. Those are manufacturer-listed hardware prices, not independently verified offers, and the page also showed potentially conflicting or stale availability language. Confirm the variant, stock, and current price directly with BoxCast before purchase. That makes total cost more than the encoder’s purchase price: consider the hardware variant, the required recurring platform plan, and any cabling or local-recording media your setup needs. Who should consider Spark?
- A church or event team with a stable finished program feed: Spark can sit after a switcher or take a direct camera feed and send one feed into BoxCast.
- A team standardizing on a particular connector: Select HDMI or SDI according to the actual source output and installed cabling, rather than treating one format as universally preferable.
- A team that wants local backup recording: Confirm the specified microSD format and capacity, and account for the inability to record locally while streaming at 4K60.
- A buyer weighing a hardware encoder against a different kind of workflow: Spark is a physical encoder for a live camera/switcher feed in the BoxCast platform; it is not a computer-free service for looping uploaded video to YouTube.
Or let an uploaded video run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than encoding a live camera or switcher feed, StreamNeo is a different tool: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not camera-based live production. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
