Best Free Cloud Options for a 24/7 Birdsong YouTube Stream

OCI Always Free is the strongest documented free VM candidate for a 24/7 birdsong YouTube stream, but capacity, reclamation, transfer limits, and YouTube archiving matter.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Always Free is the strongest documented free-VM candidate for hosting an encoder for a 24/7 birdsong YouTube stream. Its published Always Free allowance includes an Arm-based allocation equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory. That is more plausible for a continuous encoder than Google Cloud’s eligible free e2-micro VM, which comes with only 1 GB per month of eligible outbound transfer. Neither option guarantees that a stream will stay online: OCI capacity can be unavailable or reclaimed, while Google’s transfer limit is a poor fit for sending video continuously.

If you want an always-on YouTube stream without administering a cloud VM, StreamNeo is the alternative to try first: it runs uploaded video from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. For a do-it-yourself no-cost experiment, start with OCI, test the whole path to YouTube, monitor it, and keep a separate recording if the birdsong archive matters.

Which free cloud option is the best fit?

For a self-managed encoder, OCI Always Free is the strongest candidate supported by the current official documentation. Google Cloud’s free VM tier is less suitable for a continuous stream because its eligible monthly outbound transfer allowance is 1 GB. Google’s managed Live Stream API is not a free-tier workaround: Google says, “There is no free usage tier for the Live Stream API.”

Option Published free allowance or limit What it means for a 24/7 stream
StreamNeo Cloud service with a free first day per account; plan details at StreamNeo pricing. Runs uploaded video to YouTube from the cloud without a home computer or OBS staying on. It is the simplest hosted alternative, but it is not a free VM tier.
OCI Always Free Up to two AMD E2.1.Micro VMs, each with one-eighth of an OCPU and 1 GB memory; or an Arm A1 monthly allowance of 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB-hours, described for Always Free tenancies as equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB memory. Oracle Always Free resources. Most promising documented free VM allocation here, but provisioning depends on capacity in the tenancy’s home region and qualifying idle compute may be reclaimed.
Google Cloud free VM tier One eligible e2-micro Compute Engine VM per month in specified US regions, plus 1 GB per month of eligible outbound transfer from North America to eligible destinations. Google Cloud Free Tier. The small transfer allowance makes a continuous encoder upload a poor fit; excess usage on a paid billing account can incur standard charges.
Google Cloud Live Stream API No free usage tier; billed by active channel time and resolution. Its session limit is 24 hours before a channel may be restarted. API pricing; session limit. A paid managed service, not a zero-cost perpetual stream option.

This is a documentation-based comparison, not a hands-on test or uptime ranking. The published allocations and limits do not establish encoding performance, regional capacity at a particular moment, billing outcomes, or uninterrupted service. Other cloud providers may have free offers, but the current official material considered here does not establish another suitable allowance for this workload; check any offer’s eligibility, duration, compute, and egress terms rather than relying on older “free for a year” claims.

What to check before choosing a free VM

OCI: capacity, idleness, and account terms

  • Choose an eligible shape and image. OCI’s A1 shapes require an eligible image, and the resources must remain within the Always Free allowance.
  • Check home-region availability. Always Free resources must be created in the tenancy’s home region. An “out of host capacity” error means that a free shape is not currently available there. Oracle suggests trying another availability domain, waiting, or upgrading; upgrading may introduce charges.
  • Understand reclamation risk. Oracle defines idle status over seven days using CPU utilization below 20% at the 95th percentile, network utilization below 20%, and—on A1 shapes—memory utilization below 20%. A low-duty-cycle process might meet the criteria, but Oracle does not say every stream encoder will be reclaimed. Do not treat the allocation as permanent capacity.
  • Separate trial credit from free compute. Oracle describes an initial US$300 credit for up to 30 days on eligible services. That credit is distinct from Always Free services, which Oracle says continue after the trial if you do not upgrade. Oracle permits one free trial or Always Free account per person; accounts idle for 30 days or more may be considered abandoned and become eligible for suspension or termination. Oracle Cloud Free Tier terms.

Google Cloud: region, transfer, and billing exposure

The e2-micro offer applies only to eligible US regions, and the 1 GB monthly outbound allowance is limited to eligible traffic from North America to eligible destinations. The free tier requires an active billing account. On a paid billing account, usage beyond free limits is billed at standard rates, and Google reserves the right to change the program with notice. A stream sends data continuously, so even a low-bitrate feed can exceed 1 GB; actual charges depend on bitrate, traffic route, and billing configuration. Estimate monthly transfer and check billing alerts before leaving an encoder running.

Google’s separate Live Stream API bills for active channel time even when no input stream is present, with pricing varying by resolution. Its documented 24-hour session limit means a channel may need to be restarted; it is not a seamless, free perpetual-stream service.

How to run a birdsong feed from an OCI VM

This is a practical outline, not a tested recipe: the exact commands depend on the operating system, encoder, and media file. The relevant setup is an OCI Always Free eligible VM running an encoder that sends a continuous RTMP or RTMPS feed to YouTube. Allow for provisioning limits and plan how to detect and restart a failed process.

  1. Create an eligible OCI VM in your home region. Select an Always Free-eligible shape and compatible image, and verify that the selected resources fit the free allowance. If you see “out of host capacity,” try another availability domain or wait rather than assuming the VM has been provisioned.
  2. Prepare a recording you have rights to use. Use birdsong you recorded or are authorized to broadcast and archive. YouTube requires livestream content to comply with its Community Guidelines and requires you to hold the necessary rights for live and archived material; rights cannot be assumed for a particular recording. YouTube Terms of Service.
  3. Configure an encoder for YouTube. YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming and lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, and constant bitrate encoding in its guidance. Choose a modest bitrate suited to an audio-led feed and the VM’s available network throughput; the appropriate value depends on the visual quality you need and the connection. Set the encoder to use the stream key and server information shown in YouTube Studio’s live control room. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  4. Test before leaving it unattended. Start a test broadcast, confirm that YouTube receives it, and watch stream health in the live control room. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; confirm both the audio and picture before treating the setup as ready. YouTube encoder settings and live-streaming guidance.
  5. Keep the process supervised. Arrange process supervision or a restart procedure for encoder exits, VM reboots, and dropped connections, and check both the VM and the YouTube feed periodically. A VM allocation alone does not restart a failed encoder or guarantee a live broadcast.
  6. Keep a separate archive if the audio matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a complete recording, save one locally or in separate cloud storage, or schedule shorter broadcast sessions and account for the interruption and restart. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. YouTube livestream archiving guidance.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • OCI will not provision the free shape: check that you are using the tenancy’s home region and an eligible shape; if Oracle reports “out of host capacity,” try another availability domain or wait.
  • The VM or stream stops after running quietly: check the encoder process, VM state, network, and YouTube stream health. OCI’s documented idle-reclamation thresholds are measured over seven days; monitor resource use and do not assume an Always Free VM is guaranteed to remain allocated.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: verify the RTMP/RTMPS configuration, server address, stream key, encoder output, and network access. Recheck the key in YouTube Studio if it may be incorrect or exposed, then test again and monitor stream health.
  • Google Cloud charges appear: compare outbound usage with the 1 GB eligible monthly limit and review the route and billing account. The free VM does not make excess transfer free.
  • The live broadcast exists but no full replay appears: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived. Keep an independent recording or use shorter sessions if a complete replay is required.
  • A copyright claim or restriction occurs: confirm that you have rights to the exact recording and any included material for both livestreaming and archiving. A nature sound being publicly accessible does not by itself establish permission.
