Best for classic team missions: Sven Co-op
Sven Co-op is a cooperative game based around Valve’s Half-Life. Players work together against computer-controlled enemies and solve puzzles, making it a good fit for friends who want a sequence of missions rather than a persistent survival world. The Steam listing identifies online and LAN co-op and free-to-play access.

Steam’s content note mentions frequent violence or gore. That is worth considering when choosing a game for younger players; no age rating is asserted here.

Best for tactical squads: Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop
Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is a free top-down shooter built around squad tactics. Its Steam description specifies cooperative play for up to eight players, making it the clearest fit on this list when more than a small group wants to play together. The store listing also includes online and LAN co-op.
The Steam page lists the Reactive Drop Team as developer and publisher. Its description calls the game a “Co-operative top-down shooter game available for free” featuring “a unique blend of co-op play and squad-level tactics.” That is the developer’s own description, not an independent review.

Best for survival and sandbox play: Unturned

Choose it if your group would rather make its own plans in a broader world than follow a defined mission structure.

The base game is free to play, and the Steam page also lists in-app purchases. The developer’s store description says, “No pay-to-win mechanics, only cosmetic items to further customize your character.” That is the developer’s characterization of its monetization, not an independently verified assessment.
Rank #3
- Steam Up: A Feast of Dim Sum is a competitive 2-5 player light-medium weight Dim Sum set collection and action management game offering a delicious cultural experience.
- At the beginning of the game, steamers, filled with different types of Dim Sum, are stacked and placed on a Turntable.
- Each player takes turns performing 2 different actions each round. Actions include gaining and spending food tokens to purchase Dim Sum in Steamers within their Feast Zone.
- Players may also play Fortune cards to benefit themselves or affect their opponents. Starting the 2nd round, a Fate card is revealed each round to trigger an event that may affect all players.
- The game ends when a specific number of Steamers is purchased or the Fate deck is emptied. Final scoring is then calculated. The player with the most Hearty Points wins and leaves the table with the fullest stomach!
How to choose and verify a free co-op game
- Match the play style: Sven Co-op is centered on missions, enemies, and puzzles; Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop is a tactical top-down shooter; Unturned is a survival sandbox.
- Check the party size: Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop’s Steam description states up to eight players. The maximum group size for Sven Co-op and Unturned is not stated here, so check their current listings rather than assume.
- Confirm the connection you need: Each of the three listings identifies both online and LAN co-op.
- Check what “free” means on the product page: All three list free or free-to-play access. Unturned’s page also lists in-app purchases, so optional purchases should not be confused with the cost of accessing the base game.
- Verify current details before installing: Steam search results can mix games, demos, and products with different multiplayer features. Open the individual listing and confirm free access, co-op features, supported systems, and regional availability.
Steam review scores and counts change over time, so they are not used as a lasting comparison here. The recommendations are based on official store descriptions, not personal testing or a claim that one game is objectively best.
