An EA app purchase does not transfer to Steam, and buying on Steam does not necessarily remove EA account or software requirements. Availability, price, add-ons, launch requirements, and refunds can differ by game and region.
What’s the practical difference between the EA app and Steam?
The EA app is EA’s storefront and client for browsing, buying, downloading, and managing games in an EA Library. Steam is a separate storefront and client. The store that processes your purchase determines where that purchase is recorded and which store’s refund process applies.
EA says a game purchased through the EA app cannot be transferred to Steam. Do not assume that buying a second copy on another store will move the original license, downloadable content (DLC), or other entitlements. Check the listing and terms for the specific game and edition. EA explains how its app handles games and Steam purchases.
Which store has the game and edition you want?
There is no store-wide answer to which is better for availability or price. Listings, editions, bundles, regional availability, and prices are title- and time-specific. Compare the exact edition in the same region on the day you plan to buy; a base-game price is not a like-for-like comparison with a deluxe edition or bundle.

EA’s purchase guidance covers buying through EA.com and the EA app, but it cannot establish the current price or availability of every game on both stores. Payment options can also vary by location and currency. Check the live listings and checkout terms for the specific title. EA’s guide to buying its games describes its own purchase flow.
Will a Steam purchase still need an EA Account or app?
Often, an EA Account is still required. EA Help says, “You need an EA Account to play most EA games, even if you’re playing through a different platform like Steam.” Whether a particular game also requires the EA app can vary, so check that game’s Steam store page for its stated software requirements before buying. EA’s account setup guidance explains account linking and setup.

EA says you can link a Steam account from the EA Account’s Connected Accounts settings; its help guidance says this is needed the first time you play an EA game on Steam. Linking accounts does not turn an EA app purchase into a Steam purchase or transfer its license.
Where will the game appear, and how is it managed?
Games bought through the EA app
EA says games bought through its app are added automatically to the EA Library, where you can install and manage them. In supported cases, games bought elsewhere—including physical copies—can also be added to the EA Library. That does not mean the license has been imported into Steam. Games bought through Steam
A Steam purchase remains a purchase through Steam. The launch experience and any additional software requirements depend on the particular game; use its Steam listing rather than assuming one launcher flow applies to every EA title.

Start with the store that took your payment. EA says it handles eligible EA app and EA.com purchases under its refund policy, and directs customers who bought through Steam to Steam. Policies have eligibility conditions and may vary by product or jurisdiction, so check the live terms before relying on a refund window.

How to choose where to buy
- Choose the EA app if it sells the exact game or edition you want and you prefer purchasing and managing it in EA’s client. Review the checkout terms and EA’s refund eligibility conditions.
- Choose Steam if it offers the edition you want and you prefer Steam’s store and library flow. Expect that most EA games still require an EA Account; check the game page for any EA app requirement.
- If price is decisive, compare the same edition in the same region at the time of purchase, including applicable checkout terms.
- Avoid unauthorized key sellers. EA warns that it may be unable to help if a key or code bought from an unauthorized party is disabled. EA’s digital purchase guidance discusses trusted retailers and unauthorized sellers.
