OBS Studio is the best-supported free starting point if you want a graphical way to stream to YouTube without FFmpeg. For a custom command-line pipeline, consider GStreamer. Both run locally, so a 24/7 broadcast depends on your computer, power and sustained internet connection. If you are looping prerecorded videos and want to leave your computer off, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative—not free local software—that runs uploaded videos on YouTube.
Choose by what you are streaming
| Option | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Camera, game, desktop, audio, graphics or prerecorded media arranged in a visual production. | Free, open-source encoder software listed by YouTube. Your computer and connection must remain available for a local 24/7 stream. |
| GStreamer | A custom, modular media pipeline built and supervised by someone comfortable with technical configuration. | Its components offer flexibility, but it is a framework, not a one-click production studio. You must assemble and maintain the pipeline. |
| Cloud playout | Continuous playback of uploaded prerecorded videos when keeping a home encoder computer on is undesirable. | A hosted service rather than free local software. Check the provider’s current price, availability, terms and content limits. |
These choices address different workflows: a live camera, game or desktop production is not the same as looping a file. YouTube’s encoder directory lists cloud services for continuous streaming of prerecorded video; it also lists Streamlabs and PRISM Live Studio as no-charge encoder options. Those listings establish that they are options to evaluate, not that any alternative has better 24/7 reliability.
OBS Studio: the free GUI alternative
YouTube lists OBS as open-source software for recording and live streaming at no charge. OBS documents its roles in capturing and compositing sources, encoding, recording and streaming. That makes it a strong fit if you want to build scenes visually rather than assemble a command-line pipeline.
What to test before leaving it live
- Build the actual scene collection you plan to use, with the intended media, graphics, audio and input devices.
- Set up YouTube ingest and select an encoder configuration suitable for your content and connection.
- Run a sustained trial from the computer, power supply and internet connection you intend to use. Record disconnects and restarts.
- Decide how you will notice a failure and restart the stream. The available documentation describes OBS capabilities, not a guaranteed crash rate or unattended recovery performance.
OBS’s help portal states that the software is GPLv2, has no watermark and has no use limitations. No evidence establishes that OBS will run reliably on every computer for 24 hours a day; test your own setup.

GStreamer: a free framework for custom pipelines
GStreamer is a modular, open-source, multi-platform media framework. Its documented rtmpsink element delivers data to a streaming server via RTMP using librtmp and takes a location URL. The official example builds a test video, encodes it, muxes it as FLV and sends it through the sink.
That example demonstrates the components of a pipeline; it does not, by itself, validate every YouTube RTMPS configuration. Confirm that your installed build has the required plugins and protocol support. The documentation identifies the RTMP element as part of GStreamer Bad Plug-ins. Plan to supervise the process and handle failures; modularity does not remove the maintenance work.

Configure YouTube ingest and stream settings
YouTube says initial live enablement may take up to 24 hours. Once enabled, connect your encoder using the YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a public screenshot or include it in an example that others can copy.
- Enable live streaming and prepare the event. If this is your first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for enablement. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and obtain its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the ingest details in your encoder. Use the server URL and key from YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.
- Choose settings your connection can sustain. YouTube’s guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 for relevant ingest workflows, with AAC or MP3 audio.
- Test with representative content. Include the movement and audio you expect in the real stream, test upload bitrate, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback. YouTube advises: “Make sure you choose a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on your internet connection.”
YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates
| Video setting | Recommended encoded video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoded video bitrates—not guaranteed minimum internet speeds, a promise of stream health or an India-specific ISP measurement. Test your sustained upload on the connection you will actually use, and leave practical headroom rather than choosing a bitrate that consumes all of it.

What changes when the stream runs from India?
India is not one uniform upload environment. City, ISP, route to YouTube ingest, Wi-Fi conditions and whether the connection is wired or mobile all matter. YouTube’s bitrate guidance does not establish what a particular Indian connection can sustain, and there is no supported India-wide reliability ranking for OBS, GStreamer or other encoders.
Test from the intended location and connection for a sustained period, noting disconnects and restarts. For local software, include the computer’s availability and power continuity in your plan. A UPS may help some setups, but its required capacity and backup time depend on the equipment load and desired runtime.

24/7 streams, replays and content rights
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast to produce a complete replay archive. If preserving a replay matters, plan around the platform’s stated limit rather than assuming the whole day will be available afterward.
Whether you use a local encoder or hosted playout, you remain responsible for the rights to the video, music and other material you broadcast and for complying with YouTube’s rules. A prerecorded loop does not become permissible simply because it is streamed live. Review the rights for each asset and check YouTube’s current policies before scheduling a continuous stream.

Troubleshoot a stream that will not stay live
- YouTube does not accept the encoder connection: Recheck the server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room and in the encoder. Confirm live streaming is enabled; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Keep the key private.
- Stream health reports connection problems: Test sustained upload from the intended connection, lower the selected quality or bitrate if necessary, and leave headroom. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are encoded video rates, not a guarantee that your connection can carry them reliably.
- Video or audio settings are rejected or behave unexpectedly: Check the ingest codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval and audio format against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Use a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds.
- A local stream stops after a computer, power or network interruption: These are dependencies of running the encoder at home. Test your recovery procedure, and account for the availability of the computer, router and power source.
- A GStreamer pipeline cannot send to YouTube: Verify the installed plugins and RTMP support, then check that the actual ingest protocol and pipeline match YouTube’s settings. The documented
rtmpsinkexample is not proof that every build or setup is ready for YouTube. - You expected a full replay of a 24-hour broadcast: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a single longer broadcast will yield a complete archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded-video loops, StreamNeo is the first cloud option to consider: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed and streams to YouTube only.
