How to Set Up a GStreamer YouTube Loop Stream on Ubuntu 24.04

GStreamer can encode and send a local video to YouTube Live, but continuous looping requires EOS handling beyond the RTMPS sink. Here’s how to prepare the Ubuntu pipeline, meet YouTube’s ingest settings and test it.

You can send a local video to YouTube Live from Ubuntu 24.04 with GStreamer, but a pipeline that encodes and sends video is not automatically a loop: an ordinary file reaches end-of-stream (EOS), and GStreamer’s documented RTMPS sink does not replay it. For a continuous broadcast, build the encoder/mux/network pipeline and use application logic to restart or seek the source when it ends. Test that behavior with your media before relying on it live.

What you need to build

The basic signal path is:

local file → decode → convert/normalize → encode video and audio → flvmux → rtmpsink

GStreamer’s RTMP reference documents the FLV mux-and-sink pattern: flvmux produces a stream for rtmpsink, which accepts video/x-flv. The reference example uses a legacy encoder and a localhost RTMP server, so it demonstrates how the elements connect—not a current YouTube-ready command. See GStreamer’s rtmpsink documentation.

The elements available on an Ubuntu installation depend on which plugins are installed. Check the decoder for your file, a suitable video encoder, an AAC audio encoder, flvmux and rtmpsink locally rather than assuming that installing the command-line tool provides them all.

Install and inspect GStreamer on Ubuntu 24.04

Ubuntu Noble’s manpage lists gstreamer1.0-tools version 1.24.2-1ubuntu0.1. That identifies the documented tools package version; it does not guarantee that the media plugins needed for your file and output are installed. GStreamer classifies rtmpsink as part of its Bad Plug-ins set. See the Ubuntu Noble gst-launch-1.0 manpage and GStreamer RTMP element reference.

  1. Install gstreamer1.0-tools using Ubuntu’s package manager if it is not already installed.

  2. Use gst-inspect-1.0 to check whether the required elements are present. For example, inspect rtmpsink, flvmux, x264enc (or another encoder you plan to use), and the decoder and audio encoder appropriate to your media.

  3. If an element is not found, identify and install the plugin package that supplies it for your Ubuntu repositories. Package availability can vary with the installed repositories; do not treat the tools package as a complete media stack.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based stream.

  2. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the endpoint shown in Live Control Room, not a hostname copied from an example.

  3. Choose the RTMPS endpoint when available. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption, and recommends selecting the secure URL using the lock icon in stream settings. See YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Keep the stream key private. Do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or hard-code a real key into a public script. Anyone with the key may be able to send a stream to your channel.

If this is the first time you enable live streaming on the channel, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and activation before scheduling a broadcast. See YouTube Help: Get started live streaming.

Build the GStreamer output pipeline

Decode the source file, convert or normalize its audio and video as needed, encode them to formats accepted by YouTube, mux the encoded streams into FLV, and send that output to rtmpsink. For supported inputs, GStreamer documents decoder patterns using decodebin and uridecodebin3 in its basic tutorials. The exact elements and properties depend on the local plugins and media file; the available official references do not establish one tested, ready-to-run command for every file and Ubuntu installation.

Keep credentials out of shared command history, logs and source control. If you construct a pipeline description for a real application, handle the stream key as a secret and make sure diagnostic output does not expose it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GStreamer says gst-launch-1.0 is primarily a debugging tool and recommends application code for applications. A program can construct a pipeline description with gst_parse_launch(), then manage its lifecycle and respond to source EOS. See GStreamer: gst-launch-1.0.

Set bitrate, frame rate and keyframes for YouTube

YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and sets four seconds as the maximum. Match the chosen resolution and frame rate to the source, encoder capacity and a stable upstream connection; leave bandwidth headroom instead of targeting the full capacity of an inconsistent connection. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before broadcasting, since its recommendations may change.

H.264 output YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not independent performance measurements. A bitrate that is too high for the available upload bandwidth can cause instability; a lower resolution or frame rate may be more reliable. YouTube advises testing with movement and audio representative of the actual program and watching the stream-health messages.

Make the video repeat continuously

A file source is finite: when it reaches EOS, the pipeline does not begin the file again just because its output is connected to an RTMPS sink. The official gst-launch-1.0 options do not document a general --loop option for this purpose, and rtmpsink is a network output element, not a file repeater.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For one continuous broadcast, use an application or controller that detects source EOS and seeks or restarts the source while keeping the output pipeline alive—or deliberately manages the pipeline and reconnects as required. Whether a particular file can seek and restart cleanly depends on its format and pipeline. Test the transition at the loop boundary: gaps, timestamp behavior, audio continuity and YouTube ingest response are implementation-specific.

An application can also schedule a finite set of files, but a playlist is not by itself a guarantee of gapless transitions or a persistent ingest session. Validate the sequence and its handoffs with the exact files and pipeline you intend to use.

Test the stream and troubleshoot common failures

Before relying on a broadcast, test from YouTube Live Control Room with representative motion and audio. Confirm that YouTube receives both, review its stream-health messages, and let the video cross a loop boundary. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube Help’s encoder guidance.

Symptom What to check Next step
gst-inspect-1.0 cannot find an element The plugin providing the decoder, encoder, muxer or sink may not be installed. Check the element name and install the appropriate plugin package available for your Ubuntu repositories.
The stream ends when the file finishes The source has reached EOS; the sink does not repeat it. Implement EOS handling in an application/controller and test seeking or restarting the source at the loop boundary.
YouTube does not receive the stream Check that the URL and key are the current ones for the Live Control Room stream, that the selected protocol matches the endpoint, and that the pipeline reaches the sink. For secure ingest, use the displayed RTMPS URL. YouTube’s SSL troubleshooting guidance says to verify both protocol and server; port 443 may need to be specified explicitly when applicable. Follow the endpoint’s actual settings rather than assuming a port.
Video or audio is missing, or the pipeline fails negotiation Check local element availability and negotiated formats, including the decoder output, encoders and FLV mux inputs. Inspect element properties and caps with gst-inspect-1.0; adjust the conversion and encoding chain to formats the installed elements can negotiate.
Stream health reports unstable delivery Compare the output bitrate with the connection’s stable upload capacity; verify CBR, frame rate and keyframe interval. Reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate if needed, retain bandwidth headroom, then repeat a representative test.

When HLS is a different option

YouTube documents HLS ingest as an alternative for cases such as HDR or codecs that are not supported over RTMP. It is not a drop-in replacement for the rtmpsink output design: HLS requires MPEG-2 TS segments, 1–4 second segment lengths, HTTPS POST/PUT requests and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder protocol guidance.
