This is a U.S. App Store guide checked on August 18, 2026. “Free” means you can download and start without paying; many titles still contain ads, premium currency, battle passes, timers or other purchases. Apple describes that model as freemium: free to download and play with optional in-app purchases (Apple’s definition). Apple Arcade games are listed separately because Arcade is a subscription, not a permanently free service.

Apple’s U.S. iPad Games page lists many of these titles, but chart placement changes and reflects popularity and promotion as well as quality (current U.S. iPad Games page). Apple’s editorial “Essential iPad Games” selection is useful for discovery, not an independent test (Apple’s selection).
The best free iPad games overall
Roblox — best overall for variety
Roblox is a platform containing user-created experiences rather than one conventional game. That makes it the strongest choice when different players want racing, obstacle courses, role-play, shooters or creative building in one download. The iPad’s larger display makes menus and multiplayer scenes easier to read.
It is free to start, but Robux and paid items are built into many experiences. Content quality, advertising, chat and contact with strangers vary dramatically. Parents should use Apple’s purchase controls and Roblox’s account, privacy and communication settings, and review each experience rather than treating the whole platform as child-safe.

- WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
- MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
- HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
- LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
- CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.
Genshin Impact — best large-scale RPG
Genshin Impact delivers a substantial open-world action RPG without an upfront price. Exploration, quests and combat provide a long runway for players who want a console-like experience on a tablet. Its visual density and readable map are particularly comfortable on a large iPad.
The trade-off is a gacha economy: characters and weapons can be obtained through randomized pulls, with premium currency and recurring events encouraging spending. It is an online live-service game, requires significant storage and updates, and can drain battery or run hot on older hardware. Check the current App Store requirements before installing.
Fortnite — best broad competitive platform
Fortnite combines battle royale, creative experiences and social features. The current U.S. iPad listing identifies it as free with in-app purchases and requires iPadOS 17.0 or later (Fortnite on the U.S. App Store). The listing identifies iPad Pro 10.5-inch and newer, iPad Air (4th generation and newer), iPad (10th generation and newer) and iPad mini (6th generation and newer) among supported families; requirements can change.
Cosmetic purchases and seasonal passes are optional, but the game is a demanding online download. Verify storage, network and controller support on the product page for your specific version.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Brawl Stars — best for short competitive sessions
Brawl Stars is built around quick matches and multiple competitive formats, so it fits a ten-minute break better than a long battle royale. Touch controls are clear on iPad, and its varied modes provide more than one way to play.
It remains free to start, while seasonal progression, cosmetics and premium currency create purchase opportunities. Online play is required; players who dislike live events and daily progression should choose a simpler arcade game.

(*Razer Nexus does not require a fee/subscription, however some apps within Razer Nexus do)
Call of Duty: Mobile — best military shooter
Call of Duty: Mobile offers traditional multiplayer and battle royale in one free download. The iPad screen gives aiming, minimap and loadout information more room than a phone. Apple currently includes it in its Essential iPad Games editorial selection.
It is an online live service with frequent updates, cosmetic purchases and progression systems. Performance, heat and storage needs vary by iPad generation. Do not assume controller support: check the current listing and in-game settings.
PUBG MOBILE — best realistic battle-royale alternative
PUBG MOBILE favors a more realistic presentation and larger-scale matches than the stylized Fortnite experience. Its maps and inventory are easier to manage on a tablet, but matches take longer and demand a stable connection.
The download is free with optional purchases. Online play, updates and sustained graphics performance make it a poor fit for an old or nearly full iPad.
The Battle of Polytopia — best compact strategy
The Battle of Polytopia compresses exploration, technology and turn-based civilization building into approachable maps. iMore describes games as playable in 30 turns or fewer, making it unusually good for short strategic sessions (iMore’s recommendation).
The free starting content is narrower than the complete collection of tribes, some of which may require purchases. Confirm current offline and multiplayer behavior on the App Store page before relying on it for travel.

PewPew Live — best low-pressure arcade option
PewPew Live is a twin-stick arcade shooter for players who want immediate action without an enormous account-driven ecosystem. iMore describes the game as having no ads or in-app purchases; treat that as an attributed description and verify the current U.S. version before installation.
Its uncomplicated loop suits short sessions and older-looking hardware, although the game does not offer the story or progression depth of the major RPGs. Offline availability is not established here, so check the product page.
Good Pizza, Great Pizza — best cozy management game
You take orders, prepare pizzas and improve a small shop in a clear, repeatable management loop. It is easy to pause between customers and comfortable on an iPad’s larger interface, making it a good alternative to always-on competitive games.
The download is free, but optional purchases, ads or progression prompts may vary by version. Check the current listing and parental purchase settings if children use the device.
Recommended Free Tools
Among Us — best social deduction party game
Among Us works when a group wants short rounds of deduction, discussion and deception. Local or private play is preferable for families; public rooms introduce chat and interaction with strangers. Cosmetic purchases do not make the basic game free of social-safety concerns.
Best by play style
Best shooter
Choose Fortnite for its broad platform of competitive and creative modes, or Call of Duty: Mobile for traditional military multiplayer. PUBG MOBILE is the alternative for players who prefer a more realistic battle royale. All three are online and should be checked for current device, storage and controller requirements.

Best social platform
Roblox offers the widest range, but it needs the most supervision because each user-created experience has its own content, chat and purchase environment.
Best casual management game
Good Pizza, Great Pizza is the easiest recommendation for a calm, repeatable business loop. It is free to start, not automatically free of ads or purchase prompts.
Best card and collection game
Pokémon TCG Pocket presents card-opening, collecting and battles in an iPad-friendly interface. Collection games commonly use premium currency and randomized rewards, so set a spending rule before opening packs.
Best endless runner
Subway Surfers remains an accessible choice for one-handed, short-session play. Expect ads, events and optional purchases rather than a completely cost-free experience.
Best family or local party option
Among Us works best in a private group with communication rules. 1 2 3 4 Player Games, also listed on Apple’s iPad Games page, is another local-play option; check its current advertising, purchase and controller details before handing it to children.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best choices when you do not want to spend
Start with PewPew Live if its current listing still matches iMore’s no-ad, no-IAP description. The Battle of Polytopia offers meaningful strategy before its paid tribe options. Brawl Stars, Among Us, Subway Surfers and Good Pizza, Great Pizza can provide many hours without payment, but their free models include varying combinations of ads, events, currencies or cosmetic purchases.

No free-to-play label proves that spending is unnecessary for every player. Look for energy systems, timers, randomized rewards, paid equipment, battle passes and ads that interrupt play. Apple’s product pages distinguish “Free” from “In-App Purchases”; use both labels when deciding.
Best for children and families
Colorful presentation is not the same as child safety. Before installing, check the age rating, advertising, chat, voice features, user-generated content, account requirement and purchase controls.
- Good Pizza, Great Pizza: a contained management loop, but review current ads and purchase prompts.
- Among Us: best in private or local groups; public chat requires supervision.
- 1 2 3 4 Player Games: potentially useful for local play; verify current monetization.
- Roblox: use parental controls and inspect individual experiences. It is a platform, not one consistent child-friendly game.
- Subway Surfers: simple controls, but advertising and purchases still apply.
On iPad, use Screen Time to require approval for purchases, restrict explicit content and limit multiplayer communication where appropriate. Do not rely on a game’s cartoon style as a safety assessment.
Older iPads, storage and offline play
Compatibility is individual. An iPad may meet an operating-system minimum yet deliver poor frame rates, heat or battery life in a demanding 3D game. Large RPGs and shooters also need free storage for the initial download and later updates.

- Keep additional free storage beyond the displayed download size for unpacking and updates.
- Expect the greatest hardware demands from Genshin Impact, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Mobile and PUBG MOBILE.
- Do not infer offline play from a single-player description. Live-service games, account-based games and cloud saves may still require a connection.
- For every title in this guide, offline status should be confirmed on the current product page or developer support page before travel. Where this article says “not verified,” it is intentionally not a promise.
Controller support and iPad controls
Apple’s Games service brings App Store games together and supports controller discovery (Apple Games). iPadOS 26 documentation also describes controller integration and automatic USB-C pairing for DualSense controllers (iPadOS 26 features). Those platform features do not guarantee that every game accepts a controller.
Verify support on each product page or in the game’s settings before buying hardware. A controller is most useful for shooters, action games, racing and Apple Arcade titles; it adds little to portrait puzzles or touch-first management games. Apple’s controller guidance is available at Apple Support.
Apple Arcade: free if you already subscribe
Apple Arcade belongs in a separate category. Apple says the service includes more than 200 games without ads or in-app purchases (Apple’s iPadOS 26 documentation), but access requires a subscription after any eligible trial. Apple’s U.S. promotional terms state that the qualifying offer converts to $6.99 per month, renews automatically and can end immediately if cancelled during the offer period (Apple Arcade promotional terms). Price and eligibility can change.
If you already pay for Arcade, try Mini Motorways, PowerWash Simulator, Hello Kitty Island Adventure, Cooking Mama: Cuisine!, Bastion or Vampire Survivors. They are subscription-included, not free downloads that remain playable after cancelling.
