For a graphical Linux setup, start with OBS Studio. It is free, open-source software, and the OBS Project says it has no watermark or commercial-use restriction. If you want a scriptable playlist that can pair music with a still image and send it to YouTube, Liquidsoap with FFmpeg is the more programmable option. Neither guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 operation: the host, network, encoder, monitoring and recovery plan all matter.
Which option fits your setup?
| Option | Best fit | What it does | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | People who want an always-on stream without keeping a Linux computer running | Uploads a recording or playlist, then loops it from the cloud to YouTube; one flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with the first day free. | It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo. |
| OBS Studio | People who want a graphical, scene-based encoder and can keep a Linux desktop session running | Encodes and sends a configured scene to YouTube. OBS’s official help portal includes streaming and encoding guidance. | Do not assume OBS alone provides unattended recovery if the process or connection fails. The OBS Project identifies unstable connections or unsustainable bitrate as possible causes of dropped frames. OBS Project Help. |
| Liquidsoap with FFmpeg | People comfortable with scripts, playlist logic and Linux process supervision | Liquidsoap’s official book documents a music playlist paired with a still image, encoded using FFmpeg and sent to YouTube over RTMP. | The documented encoding values are a starting point and require tuning. Liquidsoap’s YouTube workflow. |
| YouTube Live Streaming API | Developers who need programmatic broadcast scheduling or management | Google documents broadcast and stream resources, plus cuepoints that can insert ad breaks. | It is a developer interface, not a simpler replacement for configuring a media encoder. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. |
For a Linux do-it-yourself setup, choose OBS for a visual workflow or Liquidsoap with FFmpeg for a playlist-driven script. Consider how the playlist and visual will be assembled, whether you can manage Linux services, and how you will notice and recover from a failed process or connection.
What you need before streaming
- A YouTube channel and access to YouTube Studio’s live controls. Check the current status and eligibility shown for your channel; eligibility and account status are not established by the encoder software.
- A Linux host that can remain available, plus an internet connection capable of sustaining the chosen output bitrate. A desktop machine that sleeps or loses its connection will interrupt a local encoder.
- A prepared playlist and a visual source. Liquidsoap’s documented pattern uses an image with radio audio; OBS can build a scene through its graphical interface.
- A YouTube stream key, handled as a secret. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Rights to use the specific musical works and sound recordings in the intended stream, and coordination with rights owners for Content ID allowlisting when applicable.
Set up a Linux playlist stream with Liquidsoap and FFmpeg
Liquidsoap’s official book documents this overall workflow: create a playlist from a music directory, create a video source from a still image, combine the image and radio audio, read a YouTube key from a separate file, encode the result with FFmpeg, and send it to YouTube’s RTMP endpoint. Treat it as a pattern to adapt, not a guaranteed copy-and-paste configuration: the book says its example settings need tuning for quality and the connection.
- Prepare the media. Put the tracks you are entitled to stream in a playlist directory and choose an appropriate still image for the video component. Confirm that the playlist contains the files and formats your installation can read.
- Create a playlist source. Configure Liquidsoap to read from the music directory. Decide how the playlist should behave at the end of its contents and what should happen if a file is unavailable; validate the playlist before sending it live.
- Create the visual and combine sources. Use the image as a video source and mux it with the radio audio, following the current Liquidsoap book’s YouTube example. A static image is a video stream, but it does not turn the setup into a camera broadcast.
- Get a stream key in YouTube Studio. Use the current live-stream setup for your channel and copy the key associated with the intended broadcast. YouTube’s interface may change, so follow the labels shown in your account.
- Store the key separately from the script. The Liquidsoap example reads it from a file rather than placing it directly in the script. Restrict access to that file and do not publish it, commit it to a repository, or include it in logs.
- Configure FFmpeg encoding and RTMP output. The example encodes H.264 video and MP3 audio and sends the result to YouTube over RTMP. It does not establish universal bitrate, resolution or keyframe values: tune the example for the source media, output quality and sustained upload capacity, and consult the current Liquidsoap and YouTube guidance.
- Test privately or with a controlled broadcast. Confirm that audio is present, the visual appears, playlist transitions work, and YouTube receives the stream before relying on the setup for a long run.
- Supervise the process and plan recovery. Arrange a way to detect a stopped process, restart it when appropriate, and monitor the YouTube broadcast and host connection. A process supervisor can address process exits, but it cannot repair an unstable network or resolve a platform or rights interruption.
Keep the Liquidsoap book’s configuration example and tuning notes at its documented YouTube workflow. Do not copy sample encoding numbers as universal recommendations.

Set up OBS Studio on Linux
- Install OBS Studio using the installation method supported for your Linux distribution, then open OBS.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard if it is offered. OBS says it can set most basic settings; review its output rather than assuming it has optimized an unattended 24/7 stream.
- Build a scene. Add the still image or other visual you intend to show and configure the audio source or media playback. Check that the audio meter moves and the preview shows the intended image.
- Configure the YouTube connection in OBS’s streaming settings using the service and stream-key options presented by your installed version. Retrieve the key from YouTube Studio and keep it private.
- Review output and video settings. Choose an output bitrate and resolution your Linux host can encode and your upload connection can sustain. Use OBS’s official encoding guidance; there is no single safe value for every machine, connection and source.
- Start a test stream and inspect it in YouTube Studio. Verify audio, image, and connection status before leaving the setup unattended.
- Keep the host and OBS session running. Prevent sleep or shutdown for the intended operating period, and make a separate plan to detect and recover from application, system or network failures.
OBS’s official help portal links to further streaming and x264 guidance: OBS Project Help. Its documentation notes that dropped frames can result from an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain.
Can you play Bollywood or other Indian songs on a 24/7 live stream?
Only if you have the necessary rights for the particular compositions, recordings and intended use. Streaming software does not grant music rights, and a song being available online or in a personal library does not establish permission to broadcast it.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content. If it detects such content, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a stream. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. This applies even if you restrict the stream to territories where you own the necessary rights. Archived live streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast ends. For an Indian music stream, confirm the permissions and allowlisting arrangements with the relevant rights owners. The reviewed Indian Copyright Act definitions do not by themselves settle the licenses needed for a particular catalog or channel.

What can go wrong, and what should you check?
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped frames or an unstable stream | Connection stability or an output bitrate beyond the upload connection’s capacity | Check the connection and lower or retune bitrate to a level it can sustain; use OBS’s streaming guidance or tune Liquidsoap’s sample settings. |
| Stream stops after the Linux session ends | Host sleep, shutdown, user session ending, or encoder process exit | Keep the host and required session available, supervise the process, and arrange a way to detect and recover from failures. |
| Audio or image is missing | Playlist path, file readability, audio source, image/video source, or mux configuration | Test the sources locally and verify the composed output before going live. |
| YouTube does not accept the encoder connection | Incorrect or stale stream key, wrong RTMP destination, or broadcast configuration | Check the current YouTube Studio stream settings and the encoder’s destination; replace a compromised key. |
| Live stream shows a placeholder, warning, or ends unexpectedly | Third-party content detection, rights restrictions, or a policy strike | Review YouTube’s notice and resolve rights or policy issues with the relevant rights owner; do not assume a license guarantees uninterrupted transmission. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a Linux computer and home connection to remain on, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded recording or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. The setup is three steps: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live.
