Brawlhalla: best for a group or local multiplayer
Blue Mammoth Games describes Brawlhalla as a free 2D platform fighting game for up to eight players, either locally or online. That capacity makes it the clearest pick when more than two friends want to jump into the same session. Its platform-fighter format is built around arena-style brawling, not the one-on-one rounds and conventions of a traditional fighter.
The official site lists cross-play across PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. That makes it the most clearly verified option here for a group using different platforms. The Epic Games Store listing also identifies local and online competition, private rooms, casual free-for-alls and ranked matches. The base game is free, but the listing notes that it may include in-app purchases.
2XKO: best for two friends who want to fight as a team
Riot describes 2XKO as a free-to-play 2v2 tag-team fighter. One player can control both champions, or two friends can pair up and coordinate their characters’ tags and assists. That makes it a stronger format match than a party brawler for friends who want teamwork and character-based fighting.

The official page lists PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, as well as ranked play. It does not explicitly confirm cross-play, so do not assume friends on different platforms can share a lobby; check the current game and platform details before planning a session.
Tough Love Arena: best for a quick browser match
Tough Love Arena is a beginner-oriented indie fighter with six characters and simple inputs. Its Steam listing describes browser crossplay, rollback netcode, and controller and mobile support. Friends can use the browser version to play without downloading a full game client, making it a convenient way to try a small fighter together.

The browser game is free. The Steam edition is paid in at least some regions and includes extras such as offline play and event skins. The listing calls its netcode rollback, but that is not a basis for ranking its online performance against the other games here.
How to choose for your friends
- Decide whether you are together or remote. For local group play, Brawlhalla is the clearest choice: its developer specifies up to eight local players. Tough Love Arena is useful when everyone wants to join through a browser.
- Count the players. Brawlhalla supports up to eight local or online players. 2XKO is designed around 2v2 team play, while Tough Love Arena suits a smaller, simpler fighting-game session.
- Check platform mix and cross-play. Brawlhalla’s official site explicitly confirms cross-play on its listed platforms. The 2XKO page confirms platforms and duo play, but not cross-play. Tough Love Arena’s Steam listing describes browser crossplay.
- Pick the format you actually want. Choose Brawlhalla for platform-fighter party brawling, 2XKO for tag-team coordination, or Tough Love Arena for a straightforward browser-based fighter.
- Check the session requirements. The available game pages do not establish whether online console subscription requirements apply in every region and platform, or whether a particular group needs accounts or separate devices. Confirm the current multiplayer setup for your platform before organizing a match.
Do you need a controller?
No controller is established as a general requirement. Tough Love Arena’s listing specifically mentions controller support, and a gamepad can be useful for local play in Brawlhalla. Compatibility depends on the platform and device, so check support before buying an accessory; no particular controller model is verified for all three games.
