Build around Arthur and Marlena. Arthur is the first tank worth concentrating resources on, while Marlena is the safest long-term free carry because development goals guarantee 920 shards (about 940 free shards in total). Add a second tank, one support and an accessible damage dealer rather than spreading materials across every recruit.
The short answer: your first F2P core
For a genuinely free-to-play account in Last Asylum: Plague, make Arthur your first frontline investment and Marlena your main damage project. The recommended five-hero starter formation is Arthur, Daskal, Marlena, Zoya and Harper. Daskal is your second tank when he becomes available; Zoya is the flexible damage slot; Harper supplies support.

This recommendation is about attainable account strength, not a list of the game’s highest theoretical tiers. The tier list is based on maximum Might at full investment. A lower-tier hero with stars, skills, badges and gear can outperform an S-tier hero that you have barely developed. The best F2P team is therefore the strongest team you can actually build and maintain.
Why Arthur and Marlena deserve your first resources
Arthur is the account’s first frontline anchor
Arthur is an early Tavern Warrior tank. The hero guide describes him as a frontline anchor for survival-focused teams, and the squad-builder analysis gives him the clearest practical signal: when Arthur is removed, the best remaining squad falls to 64/100. That is a substantial loss in the model’s five-hero survivability and damage evaluation.
#1 Best Overall
Put your best defensive equipment, Antitoxin and tank-oriented Skill Badges on Arthur before distributing those resources to several other heroes. His job is not to top the damage chart. It is to keep the back row alive long enough for Marlena or another carry to complete the wave. If Arthur dies early, improving a second damage dealer usually does not solve the underlying problem.
Marlena has the most reliable free shard path
Marlena is a Warrior carry whose energy burst is suited to boss pressure and PvE damage. Her decisive F2P advantage is shard reliability: development goals guarantee 920 Marlena shards, and the cited free routes total about 940 shards. The Last Asylum Wiki’s squad analysis describes her as the only UR who accumulates for free.
That guarantee changes how you should spend universal resources. Save omni shards and carry-focused Skill Badges for Marlena rather than splitting them among several damage heroes. A hero with a dependable path to stars is a better long-term project than a stronger-looking hero whose shards depend on a low-probability event or paid offer.
How to read tier lists without wasting materials
Tier rankings answer a different question from “who helps my account today?” The current list is marked for game version 1.0.87 and was verified in August 2026. It ranks maximum Might after full upgrading, so it measures a ceiling. It does not guarantee that an unbuilt top-tier hero will beat your developed Marlena or Arthur in the next stage.
The squad builder uses a five-hero model that weighs survivability and damage over a 30-second fight. That matters because five isolated high-tier names can fail if the formation has no frontline, no sustain or no way to keep a carry alive. Compare heroes by role, obtainable stars and the content you are trying to clear.
| Question | What to check | F2P implication |
|---|---|---|
| Can I build the hero? | Guaranteed development rewards, recurring free events and current shard access | Marlena’s 920 guaranteed development-goal shards make her unusually safe to invest in. |
| What failure does the hero fix? | Frontline collapse, insufficient damage or lack of support | Add a tank when the team dies early; add support or DPS when it survives but times out. |
| How developed is the replacement? | Stars, skills, gear and badges compared with your current hero | Do not discard a heavily invested hero for a name that is only stronger at maximum Might. |
| Where will I use the hero? | PvE waves, bosses, Rat Swarm, arena or faction-specific modes | Keep a stable general-purpose core, then adapt one slot for the mode. |
F2P investment priority, in order
1. Arthur: first tank and account anchor
Arthur should receive your first serious investment because every later carry benefits from the time he buys. Equip him with your best available tank gear, then spend Antitoxin on the hero you deploy most often rather than on unfielded recruits. Prioritize defensive skills and badges that improve his ability to remain in front of the team. If a stage is lost because the back row is exposed, Arthur is the first place to look.
2. Marlena: main free carry
Marlena is the default destination for offensive materials on a F2P account. Her energy burst gives the team concentrated PvE damage, and her shard route is much more dependable than a lottery-based alternative. Reserve omni shards for her until another hero has a clearly sustainable shard supply and enough stars to overtake her. A temporary damage dealer can fill the slot while Marlena develops, but do not repeatedly reset your carry investment.

3. Daskal: the second tank when available
Daskal is a Warrior tank described by the hero guide as a shield and damage-absorption specialist that appears around server day 29. He gives the starter formation a durable second frontline position beside Arthur. Two tanks are especially valuable when waves contain multiple threats or when a single frontline hero is being burst down before Marlena can use her energy.
If Daskal is not yet available, use the strongest tank already built on your account. Delaying progress for a perfect roster is worse than clearing current content with an imperfect but developed frontline.
4. Harper or Bell: the support slot
Harper is a Warrior support whose listed value is team attack, energy-damage and low-health survivability support. Bell is the alternative support named in the Rat Swarm core. Choose whichever has the better star level and a more dependable shard path on your account. Support value comes from keeping the core alive and amplifying its output; rarity alone is not a reason to switch.
5. Zoya, Cynthia, Annie or another accessible DPS
The Rat Swarm guide lists Zoya, Annie, Red Lady and Cynthia as main damage options. Zoya is the most natural flexible partner for Marlena when her shards are available. Cynthia can be a strong Ranger option for an account already developing that faction. Annie or another accessible damage dealer is fine when she is substantially more developed.

Recommended formations
| Formation | Frontline | Backline | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early F2P core | Arthur, Daskal | Marlena, Zoya, Harper | You have Daskal and need a balanced general-purpose team. |
| Before Daskal unlocks | Arthur plus your best available tank | Marlena, accessible DPS, Harper or Bell | Your account has not reached the server-day-29 Daskal access point. |
| Rat Swarm adaptation | Arthur or Daskal plus a second tank if the frontline collapses | Marlena or Zoya, Harper or Bell, then the best available damage dealer | You need to trade damage for survival, or survival for boss burst. |
| Thin roster | One durable tank | One strong DPS and one support | You lack five developed heroes. Add the fourth and fifth slots later. |
The thin-roster version is intentional. A durable tank, one strong damage dealer and one support usually outperform five recruits with evenly divided materials. Expand only after those three roles function reliably.
How to choose between a second tank, support and DPS
Choose the second tank when the frontline collapses
- Your tank dies before Marlena or your carry can trigger an energy burst.
- Enemy attacks reach the back row immediately after the first tank falls.
- Adding damage does not increase the number of waves or boss phases you survive.
Arthur and Daskal are the natural pair. If Daskal is unavailable, field the best-built substitute rather than leaving the second frontline position empty.

Choose support when the squad survives but loses efficiency
- The team remains alive but lacks enough attack or energy damage to finish.
- Your carry reaches low health and cannot sustain the fight.
- A support hero has significantly better stars and skills than the damage replacement you are considering.
Harper’s attack, energy-damage and low-health survivability utility makes her the default support choice when she is developed. Bell is a valid alternative for Rat Swarm if her access and star level are better.
Choose another DPS when survival is already stable
- Arthur and the second tank survive the entire attempt.
- The loss is a timer or boss-health problem rather than an early death.
- The replacement damage dealer has a sustainable shard route and can be raised to a comparable star level.
Zoya is the straightforward flexible option; Cynthia, Annie or another obtainable DPS can take the slot when your account has invested more in them.
A practical resource plan
- Choose one active squad. Keep Arthur, Marlena and the best available support in your main lineup. Do not level every recruit evenly.
- Build the frontline first. Spend your best tank equipment, defensive Antitoxin and survival Skill Badges on Arthur. Add Daskal or another tank when the content requires two frontliners.
- Concentrate carry materials. Use offensive gear, omni shards and carry-focused Skill Badges on Marlena. Avoid dividing premium materials across several DPS heroes.
- Fill the support slot. Develop Harper or Bell according to stars and shard access. The support’s job is to extend the team’s effective damage window, not to compete with Marlena’s personal damage.
- Use the fifth slot flexibly. Add Zoya, Cynthia, Annie or another accessible DPS when the core survives. If it does not, use another tank instead.
- Reassess only at a real breakpoint. Replace a role holder when the new hero has both a sustainable shard source and enough stars, skills and gear to overtake the current hero.
The beginner guide’s central rule is to “upgrade one core hero at a time instead of flattening your whole roster.” In practice, that means a new hero can remain at a basic level until the current squad reaches a clear progression wall. Save materials for the team you deploy, not for a bench full of theoretical upgrades.
Rat Swarm: adapting the core for boss pressure
Rat Swarm rewards survival plus concentrated burst. Start with Arthur or Daskal as the main anchor, Marlena or Zoya as the principal damage dealer, and Harper or Bell as support. Use the remaining positions to answer the way your attempt fails.
If the swarm overwhelms the frontline
Run both tanks if possible. Arthur’s job is to anchor the formation; Daskal’s shield and damage absorption give the team another layer before the swarm reaches the back row. A slightly lower damage total is acceptable if it allows Marlena to complete more energy cycles.

Keep one reliable tank, retain the support that provides the strongest developed utility, and use the best available second damage dealer. Zoya is the natural alternative when her shards and stars are ready; Cynthia or Annie can fill the slot if they are better developed on your account.
If the carry dies during the final phase
Do not automatically add another DPS. First test the second tank or the support with low-health survivability utility. Rat Swarm’s 30-second evaluation model favors the damage that survives long enough to act, so a defensive substitution can produce more total damage than a paper upgrade.

Common F2P mistakes and their fixes
Spreading Antitoxin across the whole roster
Symptom: several heroes are moderately leveled, but no tank can hold the frontline and no carry reaches a meaningful burst threshold.
Fix: concentrate Antitoxin on Arthur first, then Marlena and the active support. Bring the rest of the roster up only after the core clears current content.

Chasing a tier-list name with no shard plan
Symptom: a supposedly stronger hero remains at low stars while Marlena or another accessible hero has better skills and equipment.
Fix: compare the complete development path. Guaranteed or recurring free shards, current stars and role fit matter more than maximum Might alone.
Using five damage dealers
Symptom: the opening seconds look strong, then the entire team collapses before the boss phase.
Fix: restore role balance: one durable tank, one carry and one support first. Add a second tank when survival is the issue, or another DPS only when the frontline already holds.
Replacing a built hero too early
Symptom: progression slows after every roster change because gear, badges and shards are repeatedly moved to unready heroes.

Fix: wait for a replacement to have a sustainable shard source and enough stars to overtake the current role holder. Theoretical endgame value is not immediate account value.
Ignoring faction and lineup synergy
Symptom: two heroes appear equal on paper, but one formation performs worse in the actual mode.
Fix: use same-faction bonuses and counter relationships as tie-breakers when star levels and investment are similar. Do not abandon a substantially more developed hero solely for a theoretical bonus.

The Arthur–Marlena core is a foundation, not a permanent ban on experimentation. Change one slot at a time and record what problem the change is meant to solve. A replacement is justified when all three conditions below are true:
- The hero has a dependable shard source available to your account.
- The hero can reach a comparable or higher star level without draining the active core.
- The hero addresses a specific weakness in the mode you are playing.
For example, a higher-star Zoya can replace a lower-investment flexible DPS when Rat Swarm damage is the bottleneck. A developed Daskal can join Arthur when waves kill the frontline. Harper can give way to Bell when Bell has better stars and the Rat Swarm formation needs her support profile. None of these changes requires abandoning Marlena’s guaranteed free path.
Availability, version and evidence limits
Hero availability, server-day unlocks, shard guarantees and rankings can change with patches. The tier information cited here is current for version 1.0.87 and was verified in August 2026; treat later balance updates as a reason to recheck values rather than assuming the ranking is permanent. The 920 Marlena shards are the development-goal guarantee described by the 2026 Last Asylum Wiki, with about 940 free shards total across the cited routes. The Daskal timing is the server-day-29 availability described in the hero guide.
The squad score is a model result for five heroes over a 30-second fight, not a promise that every stage will produce the same outcome. Stage mechanics, faction counters and your actual star levels can change which lineup performs best. Use the model as a prioritization signal, then adjust one role at a time based on whether your attempt fails through survival or damage.
