Yes—Nintendo Switch has free-to-download games, but the official U.S. sources reviewed support 27 distinct titles, not the 35 in the original headline. This guide covers those Nintendo Switch listings and groups them by the kind of play you may want. Nintendo’s roundup is dated December 22, 2025; availability can vary by region and change, so check the game’s listing in your local eShop before downloading.
What counts as a free-to-play Nintendo Switch game?
Nintendo often uses “free-to-start” for games that can be downloaded without paying an upfront game price. That does not mean every item, progression route, or online feature is free: Nintendo notes that select titles offer optional in-game purchases. The list below uses Nintendo of America’s U.S. roundup dated December 22, 2025 as its availability baseline. Nintendo’s Switch Welcome Center has a separate free-to-start selection, and Nintendo UK’s December 17, 2025 page reflects a different regional list.

- Confirm the platform and region. Make sure the page is for Nintendo Switch, not Switch 2, and that the title is available in your region.
- Review the listing before downloading. Check whether the page identifies in-game purchases or other requirements, then select the free download option if shown.
Do free Switch games have in-game purchases?
Some do. Nintendo says select free-to-start titles offer optional in-game purchases, so “free” refers to downloading the game without an upfront game price, not necessarily to all content or progression. Review the eShop product page and the game’s own purchase prompts, and decide whether to use any available parental or spending controls before play.

Nintendo of America’s December 22, 2025 roundup supports 27 distinct Nintendo Switch entries. The original 35-game count is not substantiated by the official current sources reviewed. Nintendo’s separate Welcome Center and UK list add regional or selection differences, but they should not be merged into a U.S.-specific count as though they establish eight additional U.S. Switch listings. Demos, subscription-catalog games, delisted titles, and Switch 2-only listings are not substitutes for verified free Switch downloads.
