You can play qualifying free-to-play Xbox games online without subscribing to Xbox Game Pass. The strongest choices span battle royales, team shooters, sports, racing, co-op worlds and family-friendly party games. Start with Fortnite, Halo Infinite, Fall Guys, Warframe, eFootball or Roblox, then check the individual Microsoft Store listing for the exact account, age, region and mode requirements.
This rule applies to the game’s qualifying free-to-play multiplayer access. It does not make online multiplayer in a paid game free, and free access does not remove optional purchases, publisher-account requirements or parental-control considerations.

How Xbox’s no-subscription multiplayer rule works
Microsoft allows a free-to-play title, demo or beta to be configured for online multiplayer by players who do not subscribe to Xbox Game Pass. In Microsoft’s capability system, this is the title-level setting identified as 254. When a game is configured that way, you can download its free version, sign in with an Xbox account and use its allowed online modes without paying for a multiplayer subscription.
The rule is attached to the individual title. A paid game’s online mode is not automatically included just because a free-to-play game from the same publisher is. Expansions, season passes, premium editions and other paid content are separate from the basic free-to-play download.

Store information can change. Before installing, open the game’s current Xbox Store page and confirm:
- that the edition you selected is marked Free rather than a trial, bundle or paid edition;
- which online modes are available on Xbox;
- whether a publisher account is required;
- the listed age rating and any regional availability limits;
- whether cross-platform play, keyboard and mouse input or other features are supported on your console.
A store page can also show a free-to-play game under an “Included with Game Pass” filter. That label is not proof that a subscription is required for the game’s basic free multiplayer. It may reflect catalog organization or additional subscription benefits, so check the title’s own access details.

The entries below were explicitly labeled Free in that snapshot, with the exception of the separate verification group later in this article. “Best” means best fit for a particular player, not an objective ranking: live-service content, modes and availability can change.

Choose by the kind of multiplayer you want
Battle royale and large competitive matches
Fortnite is the broadest starting point if your group wants a game that can shift between competitive matches and more social experiences. The separate Fortnite Battle Royale and Fortnite OG listings are useful when you want to verify a particular Fortnite experience rather than assuming every mode is represented by one store entry.
PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS suits players who prefer a more tactical battle-royale pace. Apex Legends is a strong fit for squads that want character-based abilities and fast movement. Battlefield REDSEC, Call of Duty: Warzone and Delta Force are additional military-shooter options to inspect when your group wants larger combat spaces or a more conventional modern-war setting. Their exact modes and Xbox availability should be confirmed on the current listings.

Hero and arena shooters
Halo Infinite is the clearest documented example of free console multiplayer in this group. Xbox describes its multiplayer as free-to-play, supports online matches for 2–24 players, and lists Xbox cross-platform multiplayer across Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Xbox lists Xbox Game Studios as publisher, 343 Industries as developer and November 15, 2021 as the release date.
Marvel Rivals is aimed at players who want hero-based team combat. Overwatch and The Finals are other arena-oriented choices shown in the Xbox catalog. Because live-service games can alter playlists, platforms and account rules, use each title page to confirm the mode you intend to play before organizing a group.

Co-op action, RPGs and persistent worlds
Destiny 2 and Warframe are the best fits here when you want progression that continues between sessions. Their free starting points are substantial, but paid expansions, seasons or optional items can sit alongside the base game. Treat “free-to-play” as access to the foundation, not a promise that every destination, story chapter or activity is included.
Genshin Impact and The First Descendant are additional free-to-play action-RPG candidates. They are suitable for groups willing to check how their co-op unlocks, account systems and paid content work. The current Store listing is the authority for whether a specific mode is available in your region and edition.
Sports and racing
eFootball and UFL are the obvious football choices, while 3on3 FreeStyle focuses on arcade basketball and Maximum Football on American football. Sports games are especially prone to roster, event and mode changes, so compare the current listings rather than relying on an old feature list.

Trackmania is the racing pick for players who enjoy precision and time competition. Disney Speedstorm provides a more character-driven arcade-racing alternative. If you are choosing for children, check the rating, chat options and purchase prompts before handing over the controller.

Fall Guys and Stumble Guys work well for short, low-commitment party sessions. Roblox offers far more variety because each experience is created and operated separately; that variety also makes parental controls and chat settings particularly important.
Fishing Planet and Pool Blitz are slower-paced alternatives when your group does not want a shooter. Hamster Playground is another casual option. Check the individual ratings and online-mode descriptions, since “family-friendly” is a suitability judgment, not a replacement for the official age rating.
Games whose Store label needs extra checking
The Xbox catalog also displayed Call of Duty: Warzone, Halo Infinite, Overwatch, The Finals, Genshin Impact, War Thunder and Enlisted under an “Included with Game Pass” grouping. That grouping should not be read as a requirement to subscribe. These titles may still provide qualifying free-to-play multiplayer, but confirm the current title page before treating them as subscription-free choices.
Game Pass can add value without being necessary for the underlying free access. In an announcement dated March 26, 2025, Xbox Wire described in-game benefits for selected free-to-play games for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members. Examples included The Finals, Warzone, Enlisted, War Thunder, Overwatch 2, League of Legends, Valorant and Genshin Impact. Benefits can include cosmetics, characters, currency or progression advantages; they are separate from the platform rule that permits qualifying free-to-play multiplayer without a subscription.

How to verify a game before you install it
- Search the exact title in the Xbox Store. Avoid assuming that similarly named editions share the same access rules. This matters for entries such as Fortnite, Fortnite Battle Royale, Fortnite OG and It Takes Two – Friend’s Pass.
- Read the edition and price line. Confirm that the version you are selecting is marked Free. A free companion product, demo or trial may not be the complete game.
- Open the capabilities and requirements information. Look for online multiplayer, supported Xbox generations, cross-platform play, input support and any publisher-account requirement.
- Check restrictions before inviting friends. Ratings, privacy settings, region availability and age limits can prevent a child account or an account in another country from joining.
- Install and sign in. You need an Xbox account and an internet connection. If the publisher asks for a separate account, complete that step only through the game’s official sign-in flow.
- Test the intended mode first. A title can be free while a particular event, expansion, playlist or platform feature is unavailable to your account.
- Set spending and communication controls. Review Xbox family, privacy and purchase settings before a child uses the account, and explain that optional items can appear even when the initial download costs nothing.
What “free” does and does not include
Free base access
Most entries in this guide provide a free download and a free-to-play multiplayer foundation. That can include the core maps, characters, races, sports matches or social experiences advertised on the title page.
Paid expansions and seasons
Persistent games such as Destiny 2 and Warframe can offer a free starting point while selling expansions, seasons or packs. A friend who owns more content may be able to enter activities you cannot access, so compare the activity or expansion name before planning a session.
Optional purchases
Free-to-play games commonly sell cosmetics, currency, characters, progression boosts or other items. Optional spending is not a subscription requirement, but it can affect the practical cost of long-term play. Use account purchase limits when the console is shared.
Companion access is not ownership
It Takes Two – Friend’s Pass is specifically a companion-access product rather than the complete paid game. It is useful when one player owns the full game and another needs the companion download, but it should not be presented as a fully free two-player game for two accounts with no paid host.
Cross-play, controls and group compatibility
Cross-play is not universal, and support can differ by console generation, input method, account type and playlist. Halo Infinite’s Xbox page explicitly documents Xbox cross-platform multiplayer across Xbox and PC. For every other game, verify the current listing and the developer’s in-game settings before promising that Xbox, PC or other-platform friends can join.

Input support also affects the experience. Some players prefer a standard controller, while others may use keyboard and mouse where a title supports it. A second Xbox Wireless Controller is optional hardware for local multiplayer or a shared console; no controller purchase is required to access the free online games themselves.
Common problems and practical fixes
The game asks for Game Pass
First check that you installed the free-to-play edition rather than a paid edition, bundle or trial. Then open the title’s current Store page and read its online-multiplayer requirement. If the page identifies the game as free-to-play but a particular mode is locked, that mode may be part of paid content rather than the basic multiplayer service.
A friend cannot join
Compare platform support, region, age restrictions, privacy settings and publisher-account requirements on both accounts. A game can be free for everyone while still preventing a specific account from joining because of a family setting, unsupported platform or unavailable mode.

Do not use that label alone to decide whether a subscription is mandatory. Follow the title-specific free edition and capabilities information. The label can also indicate optional in-game benefits for subscribers rather than the price of the underlying free-to-play multiplayer.
The download is free but the desired activity is locked
Check whether the activity belongs to an expansion, season, premium edition or event. Free-to-play status covers the qualifying base access; it does not guarantee every future content drop.
A child sees chat or purchase prompts
Use the Xbox account’s family and privacy controls, then review the game’s own communication and spending options. Ratings and publisher tools can differ, so apply the strictest setting appropriate for the child rather than assuming the free price means the experience is automatically suitable.
Bottom line: start with the game that matches your group
For a broad all-purpose recommendation, choose Fortnite. Choose Halo Infinite for documented Xbox-and-PC arena multiplayer, Apex Legends or PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS for battle royale, Warframe or Destiny 2 for long-term co-op progression, eFootball or Trackmania for sports and racing, and Fall Guys or Roblox for casual social play. Verify the current Store page every time: free-to-play multiplayer is allowed title by title, while modes, accounts, regions, ratings and optional purchases can change.
