What “schedule rotating playlists” can mean
There are two separate jobs behind that phrase:
- Arrange and repeat videos: choose which local files play, in what order, and whether they repeat or shuffle. OBS handles this playback and sends the resulting video to an encoder feed.
- Schedule the YouTube live event: create an upcoming event in YouTube Studio, then connect an encoder to it with the stream URL and key. Scheduling the event does not make local files play.
A YouTube playlist is different again: it organizes published YouTube videos, rather than feeding local files into a live encoder. See YouTube’s playlist-management instructions.
Best free local tool: OBS Studio
OBS Studio is the practical free choice for local prerecorded playback: it documents a built-in source for one looping media file and a VLC-based source for a multi-item playlist. OBS’s Media Sources documentation is dated January 11, 2022; if a file format fails, check the documentation for your installed OBS version.
One video on repeat: Media Source
Add a Media Source in OBS, select the video file, and enable Loop. Loop is off by default. OBS lists video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.

Several videos: VLC Video
- Install VLC separately. If you use 64-bit OBS, OBS specifies a matching 64-bit VLC installation.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and add the local media files in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to restart at the first item when the last one finishes. It is on by default.
- Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized playback; it is off by default.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior when using multiple scenes: by default, VLC Video stops when hidden and restarts when visible. Changing scenes therefore does not guarantee seamless playback continuity.
OBS documents its media sources for Windows, macOS, and Linux. YouTube’s own description distinguishes the multi-item source from Media Source: “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.”
Connect OBS to a scheduled YouTube livestream
- Confirm your channel can livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. First-time live enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s getting-started requirements for the current rules.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open Manage and schedule a stream, reusing prior settings or creating a new event. YouTube says scheduling lets you promote the stream.
- Get the event’s stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Enter them in the streaming settings for your encoder, OBS.
- Start the OBS stream so the encoder connects to the event. At the scheduled time, confirm the event is receiving the encoder feed and go live in YouTube’s workflow.
For YouTube’s current encoder and scheduling steps, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an indefinite 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full.

Rights and content checks before you loop
- Make sure you have the rights to every video, music track, and other element you broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and policies apply to the content in the feed.
- Playlist rotation does not grant permission to rebroadcast a recording or soundtrack. Check permissions before scheduling, especially for game footage, licensed music, and third-party clips.
- Plan the broadcast length with YouTube’s archive limit in mind: the automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours, not an indefinite stream.

Troubleshooting common problems
VLC Video is missing from OBS
VLC Video depends on VLC being installed. Install VLC separately and, for 64-bit OBS, use the matching 64-bit VLC build; then reopen OBS and check the source list.
The playlist stops after the last file
Check that Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. For a single Media Source, enable its separate Loop option.

The same videos do not always play in the same order
Turn off Shuffle Playlist for fixed-order playback. Shuffle is off by default, but confirm the setting on the source you are using.
Playback stops when changing scenes
VLC Video stops when hidden by default and restarts when visible. Keep the source visible or adjust the source behavior if your scene setup requires it; test the change before the scheduled broadcast.

YouTube event is scheduled but shows no video
Scheduling creates the event, not the encoder feed. Verify OBS has the correct stream URL and key for that event, start streaming from OBS, and confirm the feed appears in Live Control Room.
A file will not play
OBS’s Media Sources page lists supported file types, but it dates from January 11, 2022. Confirm the format and behavior against the documentation for your installed OBS version, and try a supported format if needed.
