It brings Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and other libraries into one controller-friendly, full-screen interface. Choose Steam Big Picture if nearly everything you play is on Steam, GOG GALAXY if your collection is centered on GOG, or LaunchBox with Big Box for a retro and emulation-heavy setup.
Microsoft describes Xbox mode as a Windows feature that starts a gaming home app as a launcher and runs games and apps full screen. Microsoft’s current documentation says Xbox mode requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and is available only in supported markets. Those requirements and the rollout can change, so check your region and Windows version before treating Xbox mode as an option.

Quick answer: which launcher should you use?
| Launcher | Best for | Storefront coverage | Controller and fullscreen experience | Emulation | Cost or premium caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Playnite Fullscreen | Mixed PC libraries | Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and more | Dedicated couch-style fullscreen mode; gamepad-friendly | Can organize modern and retro libraries | Free and open source; integrations may need setup |
| Steam Big Picture | Steam-heavy libraries and TV play | Steam is the native library | Designed for a TV and controller; official Microsoft Xbox controllers are supported | Not its main purpose | Included with Steam; no separate Big Picture purchase is identified |
| GOG GALAXY | GOG-centered collections | GOG plus official and community-created integrations | Useful as a desktop launcher; verify the current controller and integration behavior for your setup | Not its primary focus | Current pricing and integration availability are not stated in the cited product material |
| LaunchBox / Big Box | Retro collections and emulation | Broad library-management capability, with emphasis on emulation | Big Box provides a themed, couch-oriented interface | Its strongest use case | Current pricing and which premium features require payment should be verified |
For a single recommendation, start with Playnite Fullscreen. It is the closest match to the “one library, controller-first, no desktop clutter” idea behind Xbox mode while remaining useful when games are spread across several PC stores.

Xbox mode is not merely another game store. Microsoft’s description says that, when Xbox mode is used, Windows starts a gaming home app as a launcher and runs games and apps full screen. That creates a console-like entry point: turn on the PC, pick a title with a controller, and avoid navigating a mouse-and-keyboard desktop.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
A replacement therefore needs to be judged on more than the number of stores it can display. Look for these functions:
- One catalog: games from several storefront clients should be searchable and browsable together.
- Controller navigation: menus, filtering and launching should work from a gamepad at television distance.
- Fullscreen presentation: artwork, categories and game details should remain legible without a desktop window.
- Reliable handoff: the launcher should start the correct storefront client when a game requires it.
- Startup behavior: you may want the launcher to open when Windows starts, but that is a separate configuration choice from replacing the Windows shell.
- Metadata control: artwork, genres, platforms and custom collections matter when the library becomes large.
No alternative makes the individual storefront clients disappear in every case. Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net or the Xbox app may still need to be installed, signed in and running to authenticate or launch a title.
1. Playnite Fullscreen: the best all-round Xbox mode alternative
Why it is the default recommendation
Playnite’s official description presents it as a free, open-source Windows library manager that consolidates Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Xbox PC and more. Its fullscreen view is designed for a controller-friendly couch experience, which directly addresses the two things Xbox mode changes most visibly: library access and input style.
It is particularly strong when your collection is divided among stores. Instead of remembering which client owns a game, you can browse a combined catalog and let Playnite hand the launch to the appropriate client. That makes it the practical answer to “Can I get a single Steam-and-Epic-style library on Windows 11?” It can also surface Xbox PC titles through its integration, but the available material does not establish that every Game Pass entitlement or subscription state will be represented identically. Keep the Xbox app available for titles that depend on it.
How to set up a console-style Playnite station
- Install Playnite on the Windows 11 machine and decide whether the computer will be used mainly from a desk or from a television. A TV setup benefits from larger text, fewer collections on the home screen and a controller connected before launch.
- Add the library integrations you actually use. Playnite supports integrations for the major PC clients listed above, but each integration can require its own sign-in, permissions or import step. Add one store at a time so you can identify which client owns a title when something fails.
- Allow the initial library import to finish. Artwork and metadata can take time, and a large collection is easier to manage after duplicates, alternate editions and uninstalled games have been reviewed.
- Switch to Playnite’s fullscreen view before testing from the couch. Confirm that the controller can move through the home screen, open a game page, launch a title and return to the library.
- Configure Windows startup only after the basic workflow works. If you want a console-like boot, have Playnite start with Windows. Treat this as an autostart convenience rather than an irreversible shell replacement; keep a keyboard available while you test.
- Test every storefront category. Launch at least one Steam, Epic, GOG and Xbox PC title if those integrations are installed. A launcher entry can be visible even when the underlying client is signed out or missing.
What Playnite does not promise
- It does not remove the need for the original storefront client when that client handles authentication, updates, digital-rights checks or the actual game process.
- Integration quality can vary by store and can change when a storefront changes its sign-in or API behavior.
- Fullscreen mode improves navigation, but it does not automatically optimize game settings, suspend desktop applications or guarantee faster launches.
Choose Playnite when the main problem is fragmentation. Its free, open-source model also makes it the least complicated starting point if you want to experiment without committing to a premium interface.
Rank #2
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
2. Steam Big Picture: the simplest choice for a Steam library
Where it excels
Valve describes Big Picture as a Steam mode designed for use with a TV and game controller, so you can enjoy Steam games from the couch. It is available on Windows 10 or newer, which includes Windows 11, and Valve documents support for official Microsoft Xbox controllers.
For a Steam-first household, this is usually the shortest path from a desktop PC to a console-like launcher. Your existing Steam library, downloads, updates, controller profiles and Steam features remain in one ecosystem. You do not have to import or reconcile games from several clients.

Basic setup
- Install and sign in to Steam on the Windows 11 PC that will be connected to the TV or monitor.
- Connect an XInput-compatible controller by USB or Bluetooth and verify that Windows and Steam detect it before opening a game.
- Open Steam’s Big Picture mode from the Steam interface, then navigate the home screen with the controller.
- Check a few different game types. Test a controller-native game, a title that needs a launcher, and a game with a custom control layout. This reveals whether the experience you want depends on Steam Input, the game’s own settings or another client.
- Decide whether Steam should start with Windows. Enable startup only if this PC is primarily a Steam machine. Otherwise, leave normal desktop startup intact and open Big Picture when needed.
The important limitation
Big Picture is not a complete cross-store aggregator by itself. It is the right answer when most of your games are in Steam, but it is not a substitute for Playnite if you regularly switch among Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, EA App, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net and Xbox PC. Non-Steam shortcuts can be added in some workflows, but that is not the same as native, continuously maintained integrations for every store.
3. GOG GALAXY: a sensible GOG-centered launcher
What makes it different
GOG describes GALAXY as a Windows game launcher where users can add games through official and community-created integrations. For GOG-owned games, GOG says features such as automatic updates, cloud saves, cross-play and rollbacks remain available. Those platform services are a reason to keep GALAXY as the primary client when your collection is mostly GOG.
GALAXY can also serve as a secondary aggregator, but integration coverage is not a permanent promise. Storefront APIs, community integrations and account permissions can change, so verify that the stores and features you need are currently supported before making it your only launcher.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
When to choose GALAXY
- Most purchases are from GOG and you value GOG’s update, cloud-save and rollback features.
- You want one GOG-owned client instead of a separate launcher for every GOG title.
- You are comfortable checking integration status when adding another storefront.
Choose Playnite instead when your priority is the broadest unified catalog and a dedicated fullscreen couch interface. Choose GALAXY when GOG services and a GOG-centered workflow matter more than universal coverage.

4. LaunchBox and Big Box: the retro and emulation specialist
Why it belongs in a separate category
Playnite’s comparison documentation lists LaunchBox among comparable library managers and characterizes it as primarily focused on emulation and retro gaming, with powerful metadata and Big Box theme support. That focus is valuable if your goal is to organize ROM-based systems, classic platforms and emulators behind one attractive television interface.
It is not the default modern PC-store replacement for a mixed Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox PC library. Setup tends to involve more than importing storefront accounts: you may need to organize emulator programs, platform associations, ROM folders, artwork and controller mappings. The reward is a presentation built around systems and games rather than storefront ownership.
Who should use it
- Players with substantial emulation or retro collections.
- Households that want a themed, ten-foot interface built around console platforms.
- Users willing to spend more time curating metadata and emulator settings.
Current pricing and which Big Box features require a premium license are not established in the cited product material, so verify those details before purchasing or planning a paid setup.

How to choose in five practical scenarios
You own games in Steam, Epic and Xbox PC
Use Playnite Fullscreen. Install the relevant integrations, keep each storefront client signed in, and test one title from each service. Do not assume that a visible Xbox PC entry means every subscription entitlement can launch without the Xbox app.
Rank #4
- Supported Multi-Platform:Switch/Switch 2 (NO support wake-up function)/iOS/Android/Windows PC (Notice:Not compatible with Xbox, PlayStation or GeForce Now, For game platforms not mentioned, please consult customer service before buying)

You almost never leave Steam
Use Steam Big Picture. It has the clearest controller-first path and avoids maintaining a second library database. Add another manager only if switching stores becomes a recurring inconvenience.
Your collection is mostly DRM-free or purchased through GOG
Start with GOG GALAXY. Its GOG-specific update, cloud-save, cross-play and rollback features are the reason to keep it central. Add another launcher only when your non-GOG library becomes large enough to justify the extra setup.
Your main library is emulated or retro
Choose LaunchBox with Big Box. Its metadata and themed presentation are aimed at systems, platforms and classic collections rather than simply aggregating current PC storefronts.
You want the closest visual substitute for Xbox mode
Use Playnite Fullscreen for a mixed library or Steam Big Picture for a Steam-only library. Both are designed around navigating games from a controller without relying on a desktop window.
Using an XInput-compatible controller
The honest hardware companion for any of these setups is an XInput-compatible PC game controller. The controller is an accessory, not a launcher, and compatibility depends on the launcher, storefront client, emulator and game.

- What You Get: VOYEE wired 360/PC Controller, 45 Days Money Back, 365 Days Guarantee Against quality defect and 24 Hours Friendly Customer Support
- Connect the controller before starting the launcher so it is detected during initial setup.
- Prefer a wired connection while troubleshooting; add Bluetooth after the basic controls work.
- Confirm that the launcher can navigate menus, select a game and return from a game to the library.
- Keep a keyboard or mouse nearby for sign-in prompts, first-run installers and settings that are not exposed in fullscreen mode.
- For emulation, map each system separately. A controller recognized by Windows is not automatically mapped correctly inside every emulator.
Startup, shell replacement and safe recovery
Launching a game manager at sign-in can make a Windows 11 PC feel like a console, but startup is not the same as replacing Windows Explorer or the system shell. Begin with ordinary autostart behavior. It is easier to recover if a storefront opens a sign-in dialog, an integration fails or the controller is not detected.
- First run the launcher manually from the desktop.
- Confirm that every required storefront client can open and close normally.
- Enable the launcher’s or Windows’ startup option only after controller navigation works.
- Restart with a keyboard connected and verify that you can exit to the desktop.
- If the launcher blocks access to the desktop, use the keyboard shortcut for Windows security options, open Task Manager and end the launcher process, then disable its startup entry after Windows returns.
Xbox mode itself requires Windows 11 24H2 or later and supported-market availability according to Microsoft’s documentation. The alternatives above are separate Windows applications, so they remain useful even when Xbox mode is unavailable in your region or not offered by your current Windows build.
Troubleshooting common failures
A game appears but will not launch
Open the original storefront client directly, sign in and check whether the game is installed. Then return to the library manager and refresh its integration. A catalog entry can remain after an uninstall, account change or moved library folder.
The controller works in Windows but not in the launcher
Reconnect it before starting fullscreen mode, test a different USB port or Bluetooth pairing, and confirm that the launcher is receiving XInput input. If the launcher responds but the game does not, inspect the game’s own controller settings or the storefront client’s input layer.
Only some stores import correctly
Check the account used by each integration and whether the relevant storefront client is installed. Community-created integrations can change independently of the launcher, so a previously working connection may need an update or reauthorization.
Fullscreen mode returns to the desktop unexpectedly
Check whether the storefront client is displaying a login, update or permission window behind the launcher. Complete that prompt with a keyboard, then relaunch fullscreen mode. Avoid enabling startup until the underlying client can launch the game without intervention.
The library is cluttered with duplicates
Use collections, platform filters and installed-only views to separate owned, installed, emulated and cloud-only entries. Keep one canonical entry for each game where possible, and label alternate editions clearly instead of deleting records you may need later.
